It doesn't seem like it's for a lack of trying. iD has struggled the last decade... they make cool looking tech, but wrapping it together in a game has been less then great.

Bethesda has been in control of the properties for a few years now. Bethesda has done nothing in terms of reigning in iD, thus why nothing has happened with the game in years. With the head of iD now gone, this might be the best time to revolutionize both franchises once and for all.

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Thought a drag this topic up from the dead since apparently Doom 4 has made a huge impression at the recent QuakeCon. those of us who preordered Wolfenstein: The New Order got a Doom Beta shot which the date is still up in the air. But Gamepur has a article up about the game and comments from those who saw the 10 minute demo that sounds like the game is on the right track...
DOOM will run at 1080p/60 FPS on PS4/Xbox One, QuakeCon Demo Footage Details Leaked, "Gruesome and Violent" Bethesda showcased around 10 minutes of DOOM footage and audience were amazed with the stunning graphics/visuals details. As per the details shared by our friend at VentureBeat, DOOM on Playstation 4, Xbox One will run at 1080p/60 FPS in order to emulate the same fast-paced thrills of the original DOOM title released way back in 1993. Here is what Bethesda's Marty Stratton says about this new DOOM at the event: "Everyone at Id is excited to finally show you what in the hell do *you* need to be told about the heritage and legacy of DOOM?" "Doom is an origin game, about fast, FAST paced combat. It's about amazing guns and blood and gore and gibs. It's the Doom game that we want to make and what you want to play" This new DOOM is powered by id Tech 6 and is build from scratch for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC. Here are the impressions of DOOM footage that was showcased at Quakecon 2014: "I don't recall seeing a more gruesome and violent game demo in my entire life" "There's huge variety of enemies on display. Small demons swarming with Giant Bullet Sponges" 'A demon just ripped a player's arms off and beat him to death with them. The room is breaking out into a standing ovation" 'Doesn't look like Health regenerates. Enemies drop health when you squish them" 'A new twist in finding the Yellow Keycard; tear off a corpse's arm and use it to open a handprint scanner" "A key feature will be stunning your enemies with a shot and then smashing their face with your boots" http://www.gamepur.com/news/15482-do...ls-leaked.html |
re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Apparently they were super secret and made sure no one was taking pictures or video of the footage. Also, the game is just called Doom and not Doom 4 or anything.

No shit? The game is using the same engine (iD Tech 5) that Wolfenstein: The New Order used and that game hit 1080p/60 with zero problems on PS4 and Xbox One.

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
I was reading a bit on the coverage of it on Gamespot ...
You'll be using melee combat a lot, and combat is brutal. Id is designing crazy enemies and weapons, and you'll be able to carry around a large arsenal "all at the same time," executive producer Marty Stratton said. |

Teaser, guess we'll see a big reveal during E3.

Doom 3 was a remake of Doom 1.
There were homages to the original Doom in Doom 3, but I don't think it was a full on remake. |

Then why does it have a "3" in the title? That makes no sense.

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
this is why i mentioned the N64 version as it was completely re-done, like Doom 3

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
I've only played Doom 3 all the way. And like a bit of Doom 1. But... I don't think story was all that important to them.
As far as I remember from it's release... it was a remake of Doom 1. Changed it up essentially but the same story. |
re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Doom 3 wasn't really a "remake" of the original Doom, as that to me implies the same game as the original but with updated graphics. And yes, i'm being picky about the terminology! But yeah, i'd call Doom 3 a reboot of the story.
Although it sounds like this will be another reboot. |

All the early FPS games like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem, etc had very little-to-no story. Half-Life, released in 1998, blew everyone's mind for being the first FPS game to have an actual story. Although Half-Life is rather basic by today's standards, it was incredibly revolutionary back in the late 90s. |

Doom has about as much story as Pong or Pac-Man.

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Doom 64 was my favorite of the Dooms, but yeah it's considered a direct sequel to the first Doom. I know Doom 3 was supposed to be but it felt dramatically different than the original as well. But since none of that worked they're just saying screw it and starting fresh.
I'm good with that.

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Kotaku posted what appears to be a cinematic from the scrapped version of Doom 4 they were working on before restarting that project.

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
I can't wait to see the E3 reveal!
That cinematic on kotaku is pretty interesting, and does correlate with the leaked images from a few years ago. It is a departure from the world of DOOM that we do know, but does make me think of the human resistance of the 90's DOOM novels. |

It was a "re-telling" of the same story if I remember correctly. There were alot of issues around it. Cormac said that story doesn't matter in games, etc etc
