Article about the terrible sales numbers of the PS3 in Sept. Funny, I bought my PS3 in Sept in that great Amazon promo. Apparently, I was one of very few.
_______________________________________ Analysts: September PS3 sales 'dismal' Reaction to NPD report finds industry watchers sullen about Sony's console; Halo 3 accused of cannibalizing sales. By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot Posted Oct 19, 2007 11:06 am PT The biggest news to come out of the industry-tracking NPD Group's September US retail sales figures yesterday was that Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copies and helped push Xbox 360 hardware sales in a big way. Today, a handful of industry analysts added a bit more shading to the story with their own interpretations of the numbers. Jesse Divnich, analyst for the gaming-prediction market simExchange, accused Halo 3's blockbuster sales of cannibalizing the market. "The most curious result was that all other games severely underperformed the prediction market's expectations, indicating that Halo 3 had a substantial negative effect on other major titles across the board," Divnich said. "Games that were especially impacted were the Xbox 360 games Stranglehold, BioShock, and Madden NFL 08." Despite Halo 3's taste for its own kind, Nollenberger Capital Partners' Todd Greenwald and Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter both saw longer-term gains as a result of the shooter's success. Greenwald called the Halo 3-spurred boost to Xbox 360 hardware sales a "best-case scenario" for publishers. "While the success of the Wii has been great for the industry, ultimately Nintendo, and not publishers, is the prime beneficiary," Greenwald said. "It is more advantageous for third-party publishers that the Xbox 360 and PS3 grow their installed bases." Pachter also expects the hardware boost to pay short-term dividends. "Although sales of Halo 3 accounted for all (and then some) of the growth during the month, the game clearly drove hardware sales that will position the industry for even greater sales in November and December, when many Halo players will be ready for a new challenge," Pachter wrote. Analysts were particularly downbeat about the performance of the PlayStation 3, with both Greenwald and Pacific Crest Securities describing the system's hardware sales of 119,000 as "dismal." "We expect similar (dismal) results in October for PS3 hardware units as a result of Sony's low-end price reduction to $399, which does not go in effect until the last two days of the October NPD period," Wilson wrote. Sony's 40GB PS3 is scheduled to go on sale in the US on November 2, whereas the $100 price cut on the 80GB model is already in effect. |
What was the great Amazon promo, the game + 5 Blu-Ray? That's still going on until February. I'm probably buying today, $485 shipped after 3% cash back credit card :D

Has anyone had any weird problems with backwards compatibility? I am renting God of War 2 for my 60gb PS3 with the newest firmware and it refuses to quit game. Instead, it stalls each time I try. Anyone else have this problem?

Besides, Deb, you just bought your 360 two weeks ago. Why the sudden need for another new system (besides seeing how pretty Motorstorm is)? |
do you even have to ask?
|
PS3 sales will probably be especially low while people wait for the 40GB model to come out.

Motorstorm is pretty but I found Excite Truck far more fun. Save $500 and pick up Excite Truck for $30. :)

Is there a decent PS2 adaptor for PS3? I want to use my Hori PS2 joystick on the PS3 (for PS2 fighting games). I read that the Pelican one from Gamestop isn't too good, any other alternative?

Oblivion for the PS3 is $20 DOTD at Amazon today. Pretty great deal for those who don't have it. I'm pretty sure the PS3 version comes with the KotN expansion.
|
To note, the game is normally $30 now.

I had no interest in the 360 or the PS3 and then I got the 360 and saw what I was missing. Also there's been some pricecuts but I don't think the 80 gig is going to be $399 any time soon.
As for the machine itself, I love it. Blu-Ray is great on my 1080p HDTV. Upconverting DVD is pretty nice also. I just don't find myself gaming much on it. If the game is available for BOTH consoles, I will chose the 360 99.9% of the time. |
i've heard that the 60gb has some "fan noise" problems. what exactly causes it? is the 40/80gb going to suffer from it as well?

Wait until spring. By then, Motorstorm will be $25, Home will be out (and you can read how good/not good it is), and a PS3 with BC will be less than $499. Oh, and decent games will be out (MGS, Little Big Planet, GTA). I don't regret the purchase of my Blu-Ray player but as a gaming machine the PS3 is pretty useless for now. (Speaking of Home, have you played Second Life? Does it appeal to you?) |
I'll second what The Bus is saying. I'm glad I've got a blu-ray player, but as a gaming system, especially for someone who already owns a 360, it's kinda worthless. Motorstorm is nice, but it's also frustratingly hard and can be had cheap on ebay (my pristeen copy was $30 shipped). I'm excited about R&C and Uncharted, but besides that there probably isn't going to be a must-have exclusive until whenever Little Big Planet comes out. My advice to anyone who doesn't need a BR player right now is to wait until spring at least when there may be another price drop and Home comes out. Unless there's a really great BF deal (along the lines of that amazing Fry's 360 deal a couple of weeksback).

My 2 cents:
Great Blu-ray player Great Up converting DVD player Good games (I love Heavenly Sword, NBA 08, Motorstorm) PS3 is also good if you have other Sony products like PSP connectivity. Also, If you have a SONY digital camera, you can take the memory stick out, pop it into the PS3 and view the pictures in HD. Same goes for Sony Hi-def DVD based Video cameras - just pop the mini DVD out and view it in HD. |
I'm not a huge gamer anymore, but there are plenty of games coming out for me at the moment.
Currently have: Resistance, Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Going to pick up: The Simpsons Game, Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero III, Rock Band, Uncharted, Unreal Tournament III. Definitely way more than I can handle for the next few months... |
I decided to go ahead and wait. Seriously, how low can the console go? An Elite plus the player is $640, $140 more expensive than the 80 gig PS3.
I AM going to buy it for sure by February to take advantage of the 5 free Blu-Ray deal. |

While the PS3 has pretty much nothing to play. Heavenly Sword was the greatest gaming experience I've had this generation.

Well I think I'm going to go an pick up a 60GB today at Best Buy. I have a lot of PS2 titles and would rather have the hardware support in the machine.
Trying to decide between Heavenly Sword or a free controller. I'll probably go with Heavenly Sword and wait to see about the rumble controllers before I get a second. I don't have a 360 and refuse to get one due to the RROD stuff. So I'll probably be getting some non-exclusives like RS: Vegas and NHL 08. Also think about getting The Darkness. Question: The 60GB has HDMI 1.3 correct? I have a BDP-S1 for Blu-Ray, but my hope for that machine decoding DTS-HD MA is waning, and I don't think it can ever pass it as bitstream due to its pre-1.3 chip. So I'm kind of hoping the PS3 will eventually support DTS-HD via a firmware update since it should have the necessary hardware onboard to pass it as bitstream to my 1.3 receiver. |
