PlayStation 3's DVR Functionality May Be TiVo Proper All that talk about the Sony PS3 possibly getting a digital tuner and DVR has just been taken up a notch with the recollection that Sony actually has a deal with TiVo. Signed back in 2001, the deal allows Sony to use TiVo software, which has been capitalized in standalone TiVos (SVR 2000 and 3000) and DirectTiVo Receivers, there hasn't been any use in PlayStations. Couple this with the fact that Sony actually introduced DVR functionality for the PS2 in Japan with the PSX, and the gears start turning. Sony's definitely known for putting everything but great games into the PS3 so far, so why not a DVR? Would you get a PS3 if it also came with a TiVo? 60 or 80GB isn't enough to store many HD programs, but they can always release a newer PS3. |
if we get Tivo software on the PS3 I'll definitely upgrade my stock drive to a 500Gb drive.

A friend of mine got a PS3 (for Ratchet and Clank.. of all things). He got it cheap, so that's good. But since I've got an HDTV now, he's bringing it over this weekend so I'll get to play around with it.. er, except he doesn't have any games yet. Oh well, I'll at least get to check out how blurry it makes PS1/PS2 games with its upscaling process.. and see how much Super Stardust HD pales to Geometry Wars.

Super Stardust is a blast. I enjoy it more than GW mostly because of the co-op mode it has. |
Odin Sphere was the first game I was going to try, hehe. About Stardust, I'm anxious to try it.. but a lot of the "me too" GW clones that have come out have tried to be better than GW by simply adding "more and more" instead of realizing that what made GW so awesome was its simplicity. We'll see.. co-op sounds like it could be great if done right.
Here's a question, can I do Blu-Ray 1080p over component? I know that HDMI will be needed once they decide to implement the copyright protection stuff, but I don't think any discs have that yet. I was thinking of renting a Blu-Ray disc to give it a run. |
I don't believe so (on the 1080p note), man you're just on a console buying spree this month aren't you?
|
Nah, I'm not buying it, a friend is bringing his over.. but I told him if he could get me one at the price he got his ($350 for a 60GB) I'd probably not be able to pass it up. That's lame if I can't do 1080p, maybe I can convince him to grab an HDMI cable before he brings it over. OH! Actually, does the PS3 still use the same video cables as the PS1/PS2? If not then we'll HAVE to buy an HDMI cable.

so fr those who have it, what is your Super Stardust scores? I just got a 46,280,210 score. I almost beat the final boss on level 5 and thought I had 1 guy left. I blinked as an eyelash went into my eye and that was that - GAME OVER. :(

ok, if you beat the final boss on level 5 the game starts over and it then tells you to try to beat it at the hard level. I guess I struggled through the first time on easy.

My Best in SS is 8.5 mil. Last I checked I was ranked really high in co-op mode with a score around the same (8.3 I think). I'm probably down into the thousands now for that mode. |
is anyone playing Motorstorm here? does anyone even own it yet? I finally scored a copy on ebay(new for 40.00 shipped) so I'll be playing it soon and would like to get some races going.

Dunno if these have been posted, but some early Lair scores:
EGM - 5.5 out of 10 GamePro - 3.75 out of 5 Play Magazine - 9 out of 10 Talk about discrepancies. I recall hearing some pretty neagtive early reaction to the game from some game shows, so this doesn't really surprise me. Mildly disappointing though. Looked like one of those games that, if done right, could have been great, but at the same time, could be a really stale game if everything wasn't perfect. |
The bad scores for Lair don't really surprise me. I never understood what all the hype was about. After seeing the gameplay videos, it looked good graphically, but the gameplay just looked boring to me. The same goes for Heavenly Sword. Lots of excitement from people that I never understood (and my opinion was pretty cemented when that laughable demo was released). I can't wait for the Ratchet and Clank game to release to give my PS3 something to do other than play movies and act like a PS2 .

Hopefully Lair will benefit from the extra month of development time that it will get because of the delay. I have a pre-order for the game for $40 due to a price error, but I may cancel it if the buzz is really bad.

I played some of the PSN demos recently and Heavenly Sword, Darkness and GRAW 2 did nothing for me. GRAW was actually the best game I tried, but I don't like the gameplay style and rarely play any type of shooter like this. There is nothing on the PS3 I want now and nothing coming anytime soon that interests me enough to plunk down $60. This machine is getting a ton of work as a PS2 and Blu-ray player so I still have no complaints and I have also enjoyed the downloadable stuff so maybe most of my buying will be on the PSN. |

I haven't read the negative reviews, but I think the changes could result in a slight increase in scores, depending on what their initial complaints were. I also wouldn't be too surprised if they delayed the game again, especially with Heavenly Sword scheduled to come out in the same time period.
