I hope I didn't misread your question but as long as you hook up the optical(to a receiver) you can get 5.1. my setup is like this:

PS3 + 360 + HD-DVD + oppo --> HDMI switch --> tv for video

all optical cables go to receiver for 5.1 for sound. I get 5.1 with the 360 going this way.

I meant that as far as i know, although the HDMI cable provides both video and audio, audio going straight to the TV isn't 5.1. You can't get 5.1 through HDMI alones since the TV doesn't have 5.1.

My setup is similar in terms of having the audio go to the reciever for 5.1 by optical, and the video going to the tv. My tv gets no audio from the 360.

Only Elites have HDMI output. The 360 will upscale over VGA cables , but not on component cables.

Reading the link Decker it was done in 2005. It states the VGA does not display true 1080P. Did this get resolved in one of the dashboard updates? Or is the 360 Elites the only way to get true 1080P?

Yes, an update fixed that. All 360s will output 1080p over both VGA and component (upscaling for SD-DVDs not possible via component, but component will do HD-DVDs and games at 1080p). HDMI output only for Elite, of course.

It does GAMES at 1080p but not HD-DVDs over component--you need the VGA or HDMI for any video content at that resolution. and yes it will UPscale via VGA or HDMI only.

Provided your television will accept 1080p over component (this is really rare), it does output 1080p. I have seen this with my own eyes (unless the television is wrong about what is being input -- it says 1080p) and there have been several other reports on DVDTalk alone.

This is probably the most incorrectly stated feature of the 360. It DOES do 1080p over component -- both games and HD-DVDs.

It's mostly a moot point, however, because the number of televisions that accept 1080p over component is fairly insubstantial. But it's certainly possible.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but it does output 1080p for HD-DVDs. Regardless of what a few places on the interweb say. But I don't want to argue this anymore... try it for yourself and you'll see.
