I scoured the net about this error, and found a lot of questionable solutions with hundreds of steps. Here's how I fixed the problem (by picking out the common denominators):
1. Configured my router so that my Wii had a static IP address instead of a dynamic one.
2. Instead of doing the update directly, I went to the "Internet Settings --> Test Connection" screen instead, and did the update from there.
I don't know which of these fixed the problem, or if the combination of both did. It doesn't seem like either should have worked.
Anyway, I hope it helps somebody out.

Right. I got 2 in the last 24 hours. One for the update and one for a message sent to me from MasterofDVD.

Dammit. I picked up Resident Evil(GC) for $13 and while struggling to deal with the crap controls I got a Disc Read Error. There was small scratch on the 1st disc but I thought the Wii could play through it...I guess not. I'll have to return it today. Maybe I'll put the credit toward Wii Play.
So far I'm enjoying Resident Evil Zero.

Wow, I never thought of that until I read your post then looked at the Wii.

Apparently the Wii update yesterday added USB Keyboard support to the Wii Menu (messaging) and Shop Channel (searching?). No support for Internet yet, but I'm sure Opera or Nintendo will enable that soon enough.
Also someone noticed a new option under Parental Controls: "Allow Online User-To User Communication". Don't know if this is text or voice chat or if it only applies to registered friends (likely) or everyone you get paired with.
Good signs by Nintendo.

Right on to the keyboard support, it's about time. Although it's odd the internet channel doesn't offer support for it. I'll have to hook up my wireless board to it and test it out.

If they would just let us store and run games from the SD card I would be happy. I was thinking of getting Wave Race, but buying N64 titles is going to fill up the memory quickly. Who knows how much space the new Impossible Mission will take.

I wouldn't let space concerns keep you from downloading games you want. In the unlikely event that you do run out of room, you can move games you aren't currently playing off to an SD card. Or, just delete them -- you can always download them again for free after you've purchased them.
