If people really read reviews Spider-Man 3, Shrek The Third and Pirates At World's End would not have had big openings. And their respective games wouldn't have sold at all.
I don't think people will go out and buy the other system if they already have a PS3 or Xbox360, but it could be a deciding factor for those who are about to take the plunge into the current gen.

I believe the preorder total was 5 million something. I know MS had hit 10 million 360s shipped either in late 2006 or early 2007, so I'd assume they've probably sold around 10 million by now.

The original Halo had online play.

And saying that Halo stands with the best PC FPS games is insulting. The one thing that made Halo so popular is that it was the first true online console game. If it did not have online play, I really do not think it would have been nearly as popular as it turned out to be. Many people, even some Halo fans, will say that single player Halo is very bland. It is not nearly in the same league as PC FPS with solid single player like Half-life, Deus Ex, No One Lives Forever, Far Cry, etc.

I've never played Halo... so I'm kind ignorant to it's online capabilities, but Wikipedia says:

"Because Halo was released before Xbox Live, online multiplayer games were not officially supported.[29] The game instead uses local Ethernet or "system-link" that supports a maximum of sixteen players. This setup was revolutionary for a console game, but was often deemed impractical by critics.[21][20] Because Halo lacks artificially intelligent game bots, LAN parties are needed to reach the game's sixteen-player limit.[16] In addition to five customizable competitive multiplayer modes, two players may co-operatively play through the game's campaign.[16] Halo's multiplayer components were generally well-received by critics.[30][11][18]

Although the Xbox version of Halo lacks official support for online multiplayer play, XBConnect and GameSpy's Xbox Connect packet tunnelling software provide unofficial means around this limitation.[12] The PC and Mac ports of Halo support online matches involving up to sixteen players and includes multiplayer maps not in the original Xbox release.[31] However, co-operative play was removed because it would have required large amounts of recoding to implement.[32] On March 15, 2004, Gearbox Software released Halo: Custom Edition for the PC, thus enabling players to use custom-made maps and game modifications.[33]"

Are you sure? I didn't think Halo 1 on the orignal X-box had online play(at least not officially on X-box live as that wasn't around at launch). I thought that was the big selling point of Halo 2 and that Halo 1 was released online later or something?

As for the other point, I said compete with, not necessarily implying equal to.

i.e. it was one of the first "good" FPS games on consoles etc. I'm not getting into a console vs. PC gaming pissing match, b/c frankly I've never given a rats ass about PC games so I'm not qualified to compare which is better. Can't stand gaming on a computer after sitting at one all day at work, not to mention all the upgrade hassles etc.

All I was saying was Halo was the first (or second depending on your opinion on Goldeneye) console FPS that really sucked people in, and Halo 2 was the first/one of the first great online console games.

The original Halo did not have online play. It wasn't until Halo 2.

Maybe Halo did not have online then... I never cared much or paid much attention to Halo, but I remembered it having 16 player deathmatches, so I assumed it was online. I played through the single player campaign, found it completely dull, and promptly sold it the day after I beat it. The day Halo 3 releases, I will be home happily playing away on Mass Effect and/or Bioshock.

Hey! I don't think you care too much for Halo, Which is o.k. We all have likes and dislike. I found Halo to be great because of it's enemy A.I. It was the first console fps that kept my attention.

It didn't "Officially" have online multiplayer. But I remember people would connect through a site to play online like a huge LAN party. I can't remember the site's name but I know it was out there.

HALO 2 was the 1st one in the series to have LIVE built into the game.

My buddies and I used the program called XBConnect or something like that to play the first Halo online.

I'm at Tech Ed in Orlando this week, and the last session I had today was about XNA Game Studio Express. The guy built an asteroids type game in about an hour, and could play it on his XP laptop, and on the 360.

Pretty cool stuff. It looked like it was built on C#.

I am happy to see the Shadowrun demo go up today. I had been kicking around the idea of getting it but the demo stratified me until my rental copy ships. It's seems like a neat idea but it is very chaotic.

I FINALLY put money down on Halo 3 today. I am taking a week off work because on the 30th of September I turn 30 and I can't think of a better way to usher in "old age".

IGN's three page hands-on preview of Bioshock

Looks awesome. The preview mentions that whether you choose to kill or save the Little Sisters will change events later on, so it sounds like there will be some decent replay value.

For those of you that like achievements, the preview mentions what some of them will be, and some of them sound pretty difficult. The Wrench King Achievement is unlocked by using only the wrench and plasmids (plasmids are the game's magic system). I assume it would be similar to Condemned's melee only achievement only much harder since Condemned was designed to be a melee game anyway whereas Bioshock is designed to be a shooting game. There's also an achievement that is unlocked by not setting off any security alarms at all. If you aren't good at stealth, that achievement will probably be rough.

Overlord - release date: June 26

According to Major Nelson and Joystiq there is an Overlord demo now up. It's being compared to Pikmin, only evil.

Major Nelson had never even heard of Overlord. I think Overlord will probably be a cult classic at best since it seems hardly anyone even knows about the game.

Yep. As soon as I heard about it I started checking the big sites like Amazon, buy.com and some others it wasn't even listed and it comes out in a couple weeks.

I just checked and it is on both Amazon and buy.com now. The Amazon link says that the minions can be distracted by alcohol and succubi. The PC version is $40 too...

Report: Microsoft Hints At Xbox 360 Price Cut

Microsoft executives have given the firmest indication yet that the Xbox 360 console will see a price drop in the near future, as part of a new article on the console’s future by financial news service Bloomberg.

The article implies that it is competition from the Wii, rather than the more expensive PlayStation 3, that is leading current thinking on Xbox 360 pricing and software, with Microsoft apparently planning to add more family games and change retail displays to make children’s titles easier to find.

No specific new titles were mentioned however, except for existing multiformat title Guitar Hero II, which Microsoft claims is popular with female users. "That's a necessary first step to getting more players to consider the Microsoft console", Xbox director of global platform marketing Albert Penello is quoted as saying. "If you don't start building that content and reputation it never comes. I don't want to be pigeonholed as a hardcore machine."

"If we don't make that move, make it early and expand our demographic, we will wind up in the same place as with Xbox 1, a solid business with 25 million people," said Xbox boss Peter Moore. "What I need is a solid business with 90 million people."

Referring to the price of the Wii, Xbox product manager David Hufford states that, "When mom walks into the store and sees she can get a console with a game for $250, she sees it as a $300 value. They've done a good job."

"We are well aware that the sweet spot of the market is really 199 bucks," added Hufford, who refused to directly confirm a price cut for the console. Internet rumors have suggested that Microsoft may be considering a drop in price for this September.

POSTED: 05.43AM PST, 06/08/07 - David Jenkins
I think any price cut would be after Black Friday. There's no need to lower the price while Halo 3 is still new and selling consoles.

No, but they might make some more impulse buys for Halo 3 with a price cut.

Good news. Have a new HD set and would love to pick up a 360, but no way at $400.

Maybe they should just drop the premium sku and lower the price of the elite to $399.

There have been rumors for a while that the premium is going away, so that might happen. I don't know if Joe Sixpack would accept that as a price drop though. I don't think it would affect sales much.
