http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/830/830709p1.html

All 45 initial tracks revealed.

DLC that is either going to be available at release or very soon after, as previously mentioned, the entire "Who's Next" album, "One" by Metallica, and 18 Grateful Dead songs.

Nothing earth shattering, as expected, in the final initial tracks. But some I hadn't heard mentioned before are "Train Kept A Rollin'" by Aerosmith, "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden, and "When You Were Young" by The Killers.

So overall some very good songs, just not as good top to bottom as GH3, which probably is to be expected with the broader scope of Rock Band.

And here's a Q&A about World Tour mode. http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/830/830764p1.html

Possibly the best news in that Q&A:

IGN: Why isn't there any online play in BWT?

Teasdale: Rock Band features several local and online modes from its deep solo adventure to its expansive full band experience. We want to make sure that the online experience with Band World Tour is perfect and bug-free, and as in-depth and fun as the other modes. In order to do that we'll be bringing online Band World Tour to you at a later date.

This doesn't mean you can't play with your friends online though - you can still play with your buddies in a four person band in Band Quickplay or with the head to head modes Score Duel and Tug of War.

IGN: Is there any chance there would be an update released to allow online play in BWT?

Teasdale: Stay Tuned...
So read that however you want, I'm not getting my hopes up that they'll release an update to the game to allow it, but at least they aren't saying no way.

That track list is pretty "meh", but I am still excited as hell about this game.

While it's a small step down from Number of the Beast, I'm still super excited about any Iron Maiden tracks. It'll never happen, but I'm dreaming of getting all of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son as DLC.

No way man. Number of the Beast is great for GH, and Run to the Hills is perfect for the Rock Band drums,

Seriously? There are at least twice as many songs here that I dig than there are on GH III.

Ooh, you're right. I never even thought about the drums. Yeah, that's got me excited now.

flashburn 10-27-07 06:35 AM

Sounds like as of right now the Rock Band guitar doesn't work with GH3...weak.

Well, looks like I owe Shagrath an apology. According to that article, the Les Paul works with Rock Band. Doesn't seem that Harmonix extended the favor, though.

That's what I was curious about - is the onus on Harmonix to program shit so other guitars will work with their game, or is it on the other guitar maker to design their guitar to work with the Harmonix game?

EDIT: Just read the article flashburn posted...they make it sound like it's Activision who isn't supporting Harmonix's guitar?

DVDChris 10-27-07 10:14 AM

yeah, I'd blame activision since Rock Band supports the GH guitars.

Posting this in both Rock Band & GHIII threads, since it relates to both:

October 26, 2007 - The rise of the music rhythm game has been meteoric, thanks in no small part to the success of the Guitar Hero franchise on PS2 and Xbox 360. Taking the plunge is a big investment, though, with expensive and bulky controllers creating a serious stopgap for potential buyers. This fall, two games are releasing that feature their own new guitar controllers, Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3. That puts a total of 3 guitar controllers on the market. IGN has now tried out the three of them in every situation possible. Here's the rundown.

The Guitar Hero 2 Xplorer controller works with everything. We tried it out with Rock Band, Guitar Hero 2 and Guitar Hero 3 on Xbox 360 with no issues whatsoever. The only drawback to this controller, aside from its wired status and button placement, is that you can not activate any of the extra guitar effects featured in Rock Band. For that, you'll need the Rock Band Stratocaster.

The Guitar Hero 3 Les Paul also works with everything and also can't be used to activate the Rock Band special effects. We tried it on Rock Band and played through roughly 10 songs without any hitches. Of note here is that the Guitar Hero 3 PS3 controller can't be used with Guitar Hero 2, even with the disc put into a PS3 that should make it backwards compatible.

The Rock Band guitar is another story. This controller, which features a number of extra fret board buttons and an effects switch, does not work with Guitar Hero 2 or 3. Cycling through the menus works just fine, but as soon as the game begins it all breaks down. Buttons don't register at all and the game is impossible to play. In addition to the extra buttons, it has one other advantage while playing Rock Band. During extended "jam" sessions of the game where you can press any buttons you want to boost up your score, you don't have to strum when using the Rock Band Strat. With the Guitar Hero 2 or 3 controllers, strumming is required.

You can't buy Rock Band without getting the guitar in the bundle this holiday season, though you can get Guitar Hero 3 without the wireless Les Paul. To that end, it seems that the only real decision people who want both games have to make is whether to get the Les Paul or stick with the Guitar Hero 2 Xplorer.

We haven't been able to test the PS3 Rock Band Stratocaster with Guitar Hero 2 or 3 just yet.

It should be noted that things may change before Rock Band is released as the game and, perhaps, the controller aren't finalized. We went to Harmonix and RedOctane/Activision for official word.

Activision had no comment at the time of this publishing, though promised one in the near future as it is still being put together. A Harmonix Spokesperson gave this statement to IGN:

"Harmonix develops and bases all of our games, guitars and other peripherals on open standards established by platform manufacturers such as Microsoft and Sony. Rock Band is no exception and supports an open controller standard. Guitar controllers are like any other standard game controllers--the controller sends a signal back to the game depending on the buttons you push. If a third party game controller is based on open standards, then it should work with Rock Band as well. If certain controllers do not work with Rock Band, questions about those controllers should be directed to the peripheral manufacturer. In addition, we welcome any 3rd party software that wishes to support Rock Band guitars. If a 3rd party guitar / music game does not support the Rock Band guitar controller, questions regarding this should be directed to the game manufacturer.

The official Rock Band guitars and peripherals are custom designed to help players to blur the line between playing a game and being in a band. Harmonix has modeled the guitar on a Fender Stratocaster and engineered the strum bar so it feels like you are playing a real guitar. We have ten fret buttons--5 on the top and 5 on the bottom---and have even built in a five-way effects switch that interacts with the game. Obviously the players have a choice, but we truly feel that once they play Rock Band with the Stratocaster, they will not want to use any other guitar controller."

We'll update this story when we receive official word from the other side of this affair.

MasterofDVD 10-27-07 10:50 AM

Not supporting all the guitars sucks but that will certainly not make me go out and buy another guitar when I will soon have three here. I will use the Les Paul and Xplorer for GHIII and just suck it up. I was hoping to always use my wireless guitars but screw em.

Supermallet 10-27-07 04:56 PM

This is exactly why I kept one of my X-Plorers. I'm getting the bundles for both GHIII and RB, so now I'll be able to play multiplayer GH (Les Paul + X-Plorer) and multiplayer RB (Strat and whichever).

aktick 10-29-07 03:20 PM

Just got back from Best Buy, and they had a Rock Band display demo setup next to the GH3 setup.

I didn't play it (I was already hot in my suit, I didn't feel like standing there all alone sweating my ass off), but checked out the instruments and menus.

The guitar looks and feels better than the GH3 (or any GH) guitar. A couple things I noticed: the start and back buttons are much bigger than on the Xplorer, and I think slightly bigger than on the GH3 guitar. The effect selector switch thingy seemed pretty easy to reach. The whammy bar is bigger than on GH guitars. I liked how the fret buttons were done. No clicking sound when you strum. And it's a little longer than any GH guitars, I think.

The drums were also setup, and were more sturdy than I figured they would be. The top of the drums is a pretty thick/heavy rubber, and they don't sound at all hollow when you hit them (I was worried they might sound hollow and very cheap). There's also all the face buttons of a regular controller on the drums. There was no pedal to be found, so I can't comment on that.

So overall things seemed well made and solid.

The demo had at least 12-15 songs available to play, including Detroit Rock City, Dani California, Tom Sawyer, and the Jet song.

MasterofDVD 10-29-07 06:24 PM

I wanted to try the Rock Band demo today when I went DVD hunting but some guy was hogging the display the whole time I was in the store.

aktick 10-31-07 07:59 PM

People on CAG are claiming at least 1 moronic Walmart started selling the big bundles today, 3 weeks before the street date. We'll see if they are just FOS and trying to be funny or if there are Walmarts that are actually that dumb.

Supermallet 10-31-07 09:49 PM

Why wouldn't there be employees at Wal-Mart that dumb? TRU sold Bioshock, what, a week early?

SonOfAStu 11-01-07 06:50 AM

My girlfriend and I played the Rock Band demo at BB last night for almost an hour. It was a little before 9:00 pm when we got there and the place was a ghost town. A few of the employees stood around and watched as they pretended to organize the video game section cheering us on. It was great fun. My gf sucked at the drums, so she stuck with the guitar (the Strat is suh-weet!). The drums were a little hard to get used to at first. The heads are SMALL! I was constantly hitting the rims at first. But I've been playing real drums my whole life, so I'm used to more surface area. The demo doesn't have the kick pedal, just the four pads. My only complaint so far is that the actual contact with the drum pads is too loud. Of course, this is probably solved by cranking your volume up (at home) which we couldn't do.

We played several of the songs. My favorites were Epic, Wanted Dead or Alive, Detroit Rock City, and Paranoid. All great fun.

Oh yeah, the drumsticks were attached to security cables so I couldn't twirl them during rests. :(

I can't wait for those either. Those and Coheed and Cambria in particular. I'm probably just going to pick up the game disc only though.

Sounds like a few random stores are indeed selling both PS3 and 360 versions...but they are obviously very few and far between. I don't know anything about "hard" and "soft" street dates, but apparently Halo 3 and GH3 had "hard" street dates, so they couldn't sell it early, but Rock Band apparently doesn't have a hard street date so they could technically sell it whenever they get it.

I wonder how much they'll fetch on ebay?

dvd182 11-01-07 09:34 AM

I've heard rumblings that the Rock Band bundles aren't street dated, so if you're just an average employee and you don't see a sticker on the package telling you not to put it out yet, it probably goes on out on the floor.

Hopefully this blows open and more retailers just put them out as they get them; I can't wait to play this.

Michael Corvin 11-01-07 10:01 AM

Hell if there is no street date and they have them it wouldn't hurt to ask for it even if they aren't out.

Supermallet 11-01-07 10:20 AM

What's really annoying is that my copy is all paid off at Gamestop, who won't sell the game to me early even if there isn't a hard street date.

Apparently, they're not FOS
