New Super Mario Galaxy trailer. Looks epic, I just hope it plays well.

Hmmmm.....I don't know.

I'm going to have to wait and see more of the game play. Personally I think Super Paper Mario looks better (and I don't mean graphics wise) between the two.

Although on a graphics note it does seem to look quite a bit better then a gamecube game.

There's one on the DS out now, New Super Mario Bros., and one coming soon for Wii, Super Paper Mario.

The only thing I'm worried about is that Mario games need accurate button presses and moves, and I haven't noticed the Wii remote being pinpoint accurate for motion. Now maybe the game won't rely so much on the motion control aspect of it.

The game looks absolutely insane in that last trailer though.

I think Mario works more with the pointing device, which I've found to be fairly solid (it hiccups when passing the remote around in Wario Ware simply because everyone has to center themselves to the sensor.. but I don't think that's going to be a problem in a single player Mario game, right?).

I don't think the game will use the motion much. From what I've seen all it's used for is to point at stuff and shake it to do the twirl jump move which looks to only be used to launch yourself from planet to planet.

Though I'm sure they'll probably add in some more stuff (at least I hope--otherwise they should just make it a game for the GC controller and/or classic controller). But I all the normal running, jumping etc. should just be the analog stick and the A and B buttons on the Wiimote.

So it should basically be like Zelda where it's more or less just normal control with some use of waggle for some of the movies where it makes sense. I loved the control in that game, so I'm looking forward to this.

During E3 of last year, everyone praised Mario Galaxy for the controls and how easy and accurate they were. And that was nearly a year ago. With an added year of dev time, they will probably be even tighter.

Super Paper Mario isn't an RPG.

It's a platformer with some very lite RPG elements (earn the ability to run, fireballs etc.).

That said, I'd love some 2D games on any of the consoles, especially some 2D platformers as that's my favorite genre. But that is pretty much dead on the consoles, the DS is our only hope for those games.

Have you watched the videos in this thread for Super Paper Mario? Have you listened to the rep manning the booth talk about the game? It is a side-scrolling game, first and foremost...

I'm a little disappointed about Super Paper Mario. I love side scrollers, especially with lite RPG elements (like Castlevania SOTN), but I was just hoping for a sequel more in line with the previous Paper Mario games. I loved Thousand Year Door and was hoping they'd stick to that overall style of gameplay. Still, if I can ever find a Wii at Best Buy (trying to use up store credit), I'll be picking up Super Paper Mario.

Not sure how I feel about Super Mario Galaxy at this point. The trailer looks pretty, but it almost looks a little too frenetic. All I see is Mario flying from one tiny planet to another. From the videos, it's hard to tell what the objectives are or how the player is supposed to know where to go next. I'm hoping there are actually big worlds to explore, rather than always just flying around in space.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This is my #1 fear for this game. I want a GOOD sequel to Mario 64, not another Super Mario Sunshine, where a gimmick makes a game less fun.

I imagine the going around from planet to planet will be basically like jumping in paintings in Mario 64.

i.e. just how you get to new worlds, I doubt it's a major part of the game.

Nintendo is just notorious for not showing shit of their games before release.

March 9, 2007 - The makers of Wish Room, Harvest Moon, Chulip, Final Fantasy XII and Dragon Quest VIII are teaming up for a new super project for the Wii. Project O (a tentative name, of course) has just started development at two southern Japanese development studios, Cing and Town Factory, to be published in Japan by Marvelous Interactive.

This title is already getting attention due to its growing list of development talent. Serving as producer is Marvelous Interactive's Yasuhiro Wada, general producer of the Harvest Moon series. The game's designer is Yoshiro Kimura, who worked on moon (PlayStation) and Chulip (PS2), and has signed on as a contractor for Marvelous in order to do this title. Another key member of the Harvest Moon series is also reportedly working on the game. Kimura also brought in Kazuyuki Kurashima, another staff member from the moon days.

Not enough for you? Well here are a couple of guys who's past games you'll definitely recognize. Project O's main programmer is Youichi Kawaguchi, the main programmer of Dragon Quest VIII. Serving as art director is Hideo Minaba, the art director of Final Fantsay XII. Minaba, incidentally, now works at Town Factory.

Wada and Kimura shared a handful of first details on the new project with Japan's Famitsu magazine. And by "handful," we really mean just a few! In fact, even after reading a three page interview, we're not 100% sure what the game is going to be like.

Wada revealed that his inspiration for Project O originally came from a Doraemon toy set. Similar to the "secret tools" that appear in the popular children's animation series, Wada imagined a tool that allows players to create a world, give it life, and observe the subsequent happenings. He likens this to the game Sim Earth. But in addition to a distant view of the world, he wanted to let players experience the world from the first person perspective of one of its residents. He likens this to Sim People.

Project O started with the idea of being a combination of Sim People and Sim Earth. But it's since become something a bit different, thanks to the influences Kimura took from Norikazu Yasunagano, who created World Neverland for the PlayStation back in 1997. That title was a "life simulation," where players could experience the relationships between artificial intelligence driven characters.

Which at long last brings us to a vague statement describing the kind of game we'll be getting with Project O. The game will combine the life simulation elements of World Neverland with the presentation of Kimura's own Chulip. On top of all that are simulation elements from Harvest Moon. The game will feature simulation, adventure and even a few real time action elements.

The simulation elements will push the Wii to the limit, promised Wada. When in the god's perspective, the game will display dozens of characters simultaneously, each moving using unique AI routines.

Another big point, mentioned Wada, is that on top of the simulation elements, the game will deliver the feeling of being part of a storyline. In the interview, he promised something different from any previous game. Kimura chimed in and noted that there's one exception: the Harvest Moon series. Kimura feels that Project O will be similar to Harvest Moon in that it will feature a loose storyline surrounding the simulation gameplay.

If all this seems conceptual, that's because it may just be. The game is currently being worked on by just the six staffers mentioned here, with the hunt currently on for the seventh staff member, a musician. Marvelous has also started seeking designers, programmers, planners and assistant directors for the game proper, and has placed a big two page advertisement in this week's Famitsu.

We're going to have to wait until 2008 to play this potential dream project for the Wii.

For me it depends on the game. I got bored with The Sims (original), but used to love Sim City. I know part of their appeal is the open-endedness of them, but I actually think it makes them boring. There has to be some goals and strategies to accomplishing the goals. I mean, The Sims had that in some sense where you "advance" by making friends, studying, exercising, etc., but it became way to mundane and repetitive, and then ultimately boring.

At least with a game like Sim City, you are building and are able to see the results of your accomplishments pretty quickly.

If they find a good balance, I'll definately be interested.

I've never liked any of them I've tried. Sims, Sim City, Harvest Moon or even something lite like Animal Crossing.

They just bore me to tears.

yea, that was basically my problem with animal crossing. what starts out as fun, quickly turns into a chore, and you question why you've even purchased the title in the first place

Seems to me that with Paper Mario and Galaxy this year people will be treated to classic and new Mario playing styles. Try it before judging it; after all everone proclaimed Nintendo would ruin Mario/Metroid/Zelda etc. by going to 3d, until they shut up and played the games...
