This is a big "your mileage may vary," but my Walmart had the PS3 Bluray remotes marked down to $12. It didn't look like a permanent markdown and it wasn't even advertised. They were on the shelf with the rest of the controllers, but they there blue stickers over the $24.99 tags. I picked one up even though I don't have a PS3 yet, because I have plans on picking one up this weekend.

The general consensus seems to be that the newest updates did fix the backward compatibility problems. I played a bunch of FFXII over the weekend on my PS3 and it looked great. There is another problem with corrupted saves, though, so backup your saves.

Just ordered FFXII from amazon for $19.99
Got my PS3 yesterday for $480 (60 gb used). Hooked up with component cable, sweet graphic, beat the crap out of Wii (not bashing, since i got the Wii too, i like Zelda TP, not a bad game).
Genji is amazing (got it used as well). The controller is pretty good, no vibration, but no biggie to me (uses less battery
) A little light, but that's a PRO IMO.

Hi all, does anyone know where i can get the ps3 game cases? you know the shorter clear plastic dvd shell? I'll be buying used games/BRs and chances are most of them will not have cases (they will be sold in the regular dvd shells).
Mucha gracias in advance.

Just picked up VF 5 tonight. Its preety awesome. The graphics are top notch. I haven't had a VF game before, but I've played a lot of other fighting games. Seems fairly easy to pick up and play, but there is definately considerable depth to the game. I wish there was an online componant, but at least the quest mode is cool. There is a ton of stuff to unlock for each fighter

(ie; grunts/groans) from the fighters during the battles? It seemed a little off
with only the punch/kick sound effects as well as seeing their mouths move
after/before the matches but nothing coming out. It almost seems like maybe
they were going to localize it into English but wanted to get it out faster so
they cut the tracks. The commentary during the matches is hysterically awful

The commentary is aweful. I don't hear any grunts either during the fights, but I do hear voices (from the game not my head) before the fights. I'm really digging the Quest mode, but it does get tough. I haven't seen any endings yet, but I'm assuming that I have to beat Dural after Arcade mode.

The official press release:
European PS3 not so backwards compatible
After nations with the PS3 solved their case of jaggy backwards compatibility issues, it seemed the whole kerfuffle about PS2 games playing on the PS3 were over. Now comes word from Europe that the PlayStation 3 launching March 23 will not be fully backwards compatible.
"The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models," said a Sony spokesperson. According to Sony, the European PS3 is designed differently from the Japan and North America models. Software will take over the backwards compatibility issues now instead of dedicated chips. Sony also says 98 percent of PS2 games are playable on PS3 in the U.S. and Japan, no percentage was given for Europe.
Alex Kwiatowski, of British market research group Vertical Market Technologies (who sounds more like a Sony flack), said, "I'm as disappointed as the next game player about the reduced backward compatibility, but even the most nostalgic, misty-eyed gamers will have their steely hearts impressed by the new features that PS3 games provide." If God of War II, a PS2 game, doesn't work out of the box -- there will be Hades to pay.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces Hardware Specification of PLAYSTATION®3 for Europe
London, 23 February 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) to be launched in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia on 23rd March 2007 would utilise a new hardware specification.
The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engine™, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS™ wireless controller. It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation® (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation®2 (PS2) titles.
“PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system,” said David Reeves, President of SCEE. “Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.”
Some additional PS2 titles will become compatible on the PS3 system through regular downloadable firmware updates, which will be made available through the PLAYSTATION®Network, from http://www.playstation.com or via PS3 game discs, with the first update planned for the launch date of the 23rd March 2007.
Users will be able to check whether their titles are compatible with PS3 at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc. This site will be available on 23rd March to meet launch day.
1. A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch is required to output 7.1 ch audio, supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format, from the HDMI OUT connector.
2. This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel.
3. Usability of all storage media types is not guaranteed.
4. Certain PlayStation 2 format software titles may not perform properly on this system. Visit faq.eu.playstation.com/bc for the latest information regarding compatible titles

What scares me about this news is that removing the hardware BC and replacing it with software emulation is obviously a cost cutting measure. That would lead me to believe that future versions of the console here in the states will have this change as well. Which means that if you don't get a launch console, your BC options decrease dramatically.

That really sucks for Euro gamers. I never had a PS or PS2, so one of the big reasons that I got a PS3 was the huge library of games that I've never played.

Is there any chance they addressed the scaling issue with this version? Maybe they took out some PS2 hardware and replaced it with a scaling chip at the same price to make?

Microsoft goes with software emulation for the 360, and they received a lot of negative criticism for it. Apparently Sony is now going to do the same. "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Pick up a fucking history book Sony before this
happens.
happens.

My PS2 broke last year, and I never bought a new one because I figured I would just wait and buy a PS3 in a couple years. I was looking forward to playing all the PS2 games I missed, like God of War 2, but now I might not be able to. I surely am not the only person like this.
This could hurt sales on God of War 2 if people with only a PS3 are not able to play it. Many people sold their PS2 since the PS3 was "supposed" to be fully BC.

Sure there was complaining, but I doubt it hurt sales. I'll admit I bitched when it happened but I still bought a system on launch day. I'm sure I wasn't the only one.
I doubt it will affect Sony at all. The big difference is Sony still supports the PS2 and they are a lot cheaper than the Xbox ever was. Sure it would be nice to dump one system for another but due to the value of the PS2 the emulation isn't as hard to swallow. I could still get over $100 for my Xbox before launch last year, the same can't be said of the PS2. That was a sticky point for some wanting to put it towards the next gen.

Really makes you wonder what the hell they're really thinking over there and why they can't just give a straight answer as to WHY this is happening. Is it financial? Did they over-deliver on their BC promise in JP and the US and can afford to back off in the EU market? It doesn't make sense...
