Great review, L&O!

My only two gripes so far have been the length of the USB cable for the controller and having to leave the system on while it charges and my initial set-up with HDMI. When I first plugged my HDMI cable from the TV to the PS3 and powered on, I saw nothing on the screen. I must have fooled with it for about 10 minutes trying to figure out why the hell it wasn't working. I then checked online and read about having to hold the power button down for 5 seconds, when powering the system on, for the PS3 to configure the display settings. It would have been nice of Sony to put that in the manual. Aside from that I don't have any other complaints other than bring on the games!

I agree with you about the interface, very easy to use if you've owned a PSP. I had no problems navigating my way through it during set-up. Also, you're right on about the SIXAXIS controller. It's only light because it doesn't have rumble, not because it's constructed of cheap plastic. It's just as solid as the Dual-Shock controllers on the PS2 but w/o the rumble. Like I said before, I like the feel of the controller in my hands because it is lighter but the drawback is, no rumble.

Aside from Devil May Cry 4 and MGS 4, there are some other great games to look forward to -- Gran Turismo HD, GTA 4, and the seventh Final Fantasy title will debut on a Sony console with Final Fantasy XIII. All consoles have their initial hiccups but I'm looking forward to some great gaming on the PS3.

Nice review! I think you meant quiet here, though:
The system also is ridiculously quite when operating, so quite scenes in movie
oops hit edit instead of quote

D'oh! Thanks. Guess the guy who read it over skipped that too! Damn you Dragon Fly!

Fixed it to read:

"The system also is ridiculously quiet when operating; so hushed scenes in movies or games will not be ruined by a loud fan. "

Thanks.

Yeah, I could've listed everything that was coming but I'm more interested in playing those two titles. I've never played DMC and have always wanted to - so I think picking up the collectors pack is a no brainer for me now to get ready for DMC4 - and MGS is always a good experience.

has anyone been able to get the Remote Play to work? I just watched a video on how you set it up but mine doesn't work.

EDIT: now it works. I changed my WPA key and then it worked. I probably just typed something wrong in one of the 2 units.

I lucked up and found a PS3 last night at a very ghetto Gamestop. I wouldn't haved believed for a minute that this hole in the wall store had one but they did.

After running all over town trying to find one, I did at my last stop. Talk about blind luck.......

Has anyone gotten pictures to work off of USB thumb drives? When I plug mine in it recognizes the thumb drive, but doesn't show that there are any pictures...Is there something I need to do after I put the drive in?

Problems with new PS3

I recently hooked up my new PS3 and there is a low (but very noticeable) humming sound that is constant through the speaker. Also there are a couple of "scan lines" that constantly move up the screen.

I have tried two different sets of component cables (resolutions 720p and 480) and also the composite cables that came with the unit. Also have tried different electrical outlets. I've not had any other problems with anything else using either the component or the composite input jacks.

It screams like some sort of grounding or interference problem, but I can't figure this one out and am starting to think it's the PS3 itself. I have friend coming over that has a working PS3 and he's going to swap his into my setup, to help narrow it down.

But has anyone else heard of anything like this?

If it is a sound issue why not check if it is the speakers. Hook it up to some computer speakers or maybe try some headphones.

It's sound and video. The hum comes through both TV (hooked directly) or stereo receiver if hooked directly to that.

sounds like a ground loop to me. I had the same sounding issue when I first hooked up my HD-DVD player and a nongrounded Comcast coax cable was the problem. fixed the ground and all was fine.

I agree, but where? Tried different cables component/composite. On different inputs. Other things plugged into the same inputs are fine.

Only thing I can figure is a grounding problem inside the box. I have a friend coming over this week with his PS3 box on my setup, that should tell me what's up.

do you have cable tv? if so, just unhook the cable in line from your setup and see if the problem is still there? I never knew I had a grounding problem until the day I hooked up my Toshiba. I don't know why the issue never showed up until that moment either.

Yeah, I do. Thanks for the info.

I'll give that a shot as soon as the wife gives up the TV tonight . (I'll unplug all other things too). I'll probably go hook it up to another tube TV upstairs and see what happens.

You are my new internet hero!

I took it to a different TV had the same problem, unplugged CTV, and bingo! Problem isolated. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now.... how did you fix the grounding problem in your cable tv? Did you have to call your provider, and if so, what did you tell them to make them believe you? Or did you just checkout the hookup outside yourself?

Unfortunately I had this issue too. Of course, at the time I had it, the PS3 message boards didn't have any info on this problem so I sent it back to Sony for a new one under their warranty. Of course, this was 2 weeks ago and I still don't have my new PS3... I was originally told there was a 3 to 5 business day turnaround. I'm told it'll come this week. Whatever. Wish I would have just waited since on some of the PS3 boards they say that it's the ground loop thing and that the easiest fix is to plug your PS3 into the wall using one of those 3-prong to 2-prong outlet adaptors (cost about 49 cents) to eliminate the ground on the PS3. Shouldn't add too much additional risk to your PS3 since I think a ground loop is caused by 2 or more grounds, so eliminating the one on the PS3 will still leave a ground somewhere else (probably your tv cable). I'm not worried about eliminating the direct ground to PS3 since my PS2 didn't have one.

So I'm sure that when I eventually get my new PS3 from Sony, I'll have the same problem I had before and I'll just try the 49 cent adaptor and hope that is it as it's not too convenient to have to unplug my cable tv everytime I want to play PS3.

At least I have my Wii to hold me over otherwise I'd be going postal.

no problem. glad I could help.

I fixed the problem myself since in my situation it was very easy. Comcast grounded my line to the outdoor hose line which had a break a few years ago which was replaced by a section of pvc which caused a break in the ground. I recently had new electrical service installed which included a dual grounding rod setup. I just had to run a new ground wire about 5ft. from the comcast connector to the new rod and it was fixed. it took me a total of 5min. to do in my case. hopefully it will be the same easy fix for you.

For those looking for a new Sixaxis, I think this is a great deal. Buy.com has it for $42.63. Add $7.37 and you can get the $20 off $50 deal with Google!
Now, it doesn't have a picture, but if you go under the additional info tab, it says the publisher is Sony. Down side is you have to pay shipping, though it is only $4.97 for the cheapest version. Even at that rate, it kicks ass! I got the controller and Dodgeball Unrated for $38 and change shipped!

That's something they can add in a firmware update.
