Oh snap..! But to be honest, my priorities stand as:

1. US RELEASE DATE!
2. See above.
3. See above.
4. See above.
5. See above.
6. See above.
7. See above.
8. Price!

So unless there's some kind of "new secret" revealed about the hardware, I'm still counting down to that NYC conference.

Snip...
A reader tipped us off that Wii Sports disappeared as a preorder option from his local GameStop and we got to work. Though the title is still listed on the web sites (at an exorbitant price, natch) at GameStop and EBGames, our favorite EBGames employee confirmed that the title had disappeared from preorder lists ... and was quick to point out the upcoming Nintendo announcement. It was all very, how shall we say ... conspiratorial?

To add fuel to the fire -- at GameStop, several of the other older Wii titles (like Red Steel) have box art images linked. Wii Sports does not.
Snip...
Can you say pack-in? I'm guessing Nintendo can.

My Indigo Gamecube I got at launch from Wal-Mart is still kicking with no problems.

I've never heard of any defective Nintendo hardware, even the DS touch screen. The Wii does have the unknown factor with the motion-sensing and the slot-load drive. Everything else they've done before. No worries. Save that extended warranty money for games

I've had a launch system consoles all the way back to the SNES(got my NES much later than everyone else). No problems with any of them.

Cool news about Wii sports. Only a few more hours.

I've owned every nintendo console ever put out (bought them all at launch), and other than having to blow into the cartridge to get my copies of kid icarus and punch out to work, they all still work fine.

From what I can tell, I'm an exception to the rule, but my first Gamecube went belly-up within the first six months or so. It was purchased close to launch. On the upside, Nintendo was good with communication and fast to take action. I had to take it to a local Nintendo-authorized repair guy who verified it was dead and, within a week or two, they sent me a like-new refurbished unit. The replacement unit worked perfectly right up until when I ebay'd it about a month ago to make room in my entertainment center for a Wii. And like I said, I believe I'm in a small minority. I have heard of hardly any problems with Nintendo hardware.

On an unrelated side note, does anyone know of any sites that will be giving a blow-by-blow, translated rundown of the event in Japan as it happens tonight?

Yeah, any info on this would be great. I also haven't heard who'll be doing live updates from the US event tomorrow.

My prediction is that there are two controllers and the Wiisports packed in for $229 on October 22nd.

It shouldn't come as a "surprise" that Nintendo would include Wii-sports as a pack-in. It aligns with all their strategic actions to date and more importantly (argueably) it provides Nintendo the ability to "control" many users first experiences with the Wii.

Because the system is so new and different, controlling this first interaction and ensuring a successful launch is paramount to the Wii success overall in that reduces negative backlash from poorly implemented games and encourages the gamer to learn the system on Nintendo's terms.

I'm holding out for bigger "surprises" then Wii sports is a pack in, I'm hoping for a new IP or Pikmin title.

I was thinking the same thing about the price but the 22nd is a Sun so that won't work. I do expect (and hope) it to launch in mid to late Oct though.

Same here, except my Gamecube died right around the year mark and I was on vacation in Utah when it happened. Nintendo sent me to the nearest repair place and the determined it was dead and within two days a like-new refurb unit was sitting on my parent's doorstep... and its been working like a charm ever since.

There's a thread about it in here somewhere.
