Some attachments wouldn't be necessary--a baseball bat, a hockey stick, and, er, the other thing, are all long and thing things, much like the control itself, whereas a steering wheel is obviously not. But yeah, it would be easy to start being overwhelmed with accessories. Hopefully they're either be packins and not jack the cost of the game up much, or there will be only a few of them and lots of games will use them.
It looks like the wheel isn't actually a 'controller' but a 'holder' or frame, which should keep costs low.

Brent L 09-09-06 05:25 PM

I guess this is why we have a wheel, so we can actually steer instead of tilt.

I love these .GIFs from GA. People are trying so hard to understand/explain everything:

Are they going to add a baseball bat attachment? What about a dildo attachment for a sex game? What about a hockey stick attachment?

This is something I don't and will not look forward to. I am fine with something like guitar hero but to get an attachment with other games could negatively affect the sales of the console because it will definitely add to the extra cost and definitely make it more gimmicky.

I'm definitely picking this system up but starting to have some reservations.

So far, none of the attachments are actually necessary, they just help you out to make certain games feel easier/more immersive. You can play driving games without the wheel. I'm sure you can play Duck Hunt without the light gun attachment. You can buy the all-purpose VC controller or even use a Gamecube controller for classic games. These extras are all options, but so far I've seen nothing that would require you to buy more than the basic Wiimote and nunchuck attachment if you have a GC controller, and nothing more than Wiimote, nunchuck, all purpose VC controller if you don't have a GC controller.

Rumor/Grain-of-salt time. http://www.wii-x2.com/index.php?id=270

Snip...
You will get the information you want on the 14th.

The price will not disappoint. The date will not disappoint. The games will not disappoint, obviously. What comes in the box might disappoint a few of you, though. Nintendo is going to pack in the console itself of course, with two Wii remotes and two nunchuck attachments. As far as my source knows though, you won't be getting the classic controller packed in. Nintendo will also be deciding on the 13th, the day before the conference in other words, whether or not to add an SD memory card to the list of things included in the box.

To make up for the lack of the classic controller at launch, Nintendo is planning to pack in Wii Sports. The whole point behind the Wii is to get everyone in the family interested in gaming. Nintendo figures that two Wii remote and nunchuck controllers and Wii Sports will be an immediate hook for the audience they're aiming for.
Snip...
4 days away from the truth anyway, I figured this would only whet the appetites, true or not.

Supermallet 09-10-06 06:33 AM

I'd be more than happy to skip the VC controller in favor of a second Wiimote and nunchuck. I'm just going to use my Wavebirds for the VC anyway.

As for the price, I'm thinking $200, and the release date will be the last week of October. That's my guess.

lordwow 09-10-06 07:06 AM

I don't mind buying the VC controller, because... either way... I'm buying another controller (either the VC or the nunchuck). 2 Nunchucks is just as well for me.

That being said, I'm willing to pay a bit more for a basic SD card to be included. I'll give a big  to Nintendo if it's what was described at a ~200 price.

I agree on all points.

More rumor-mongering, http://www.play-nintendo.com/news/06090902.html

Below is the most recent list that our source has laid eyes on, listed in alphabetical order:
1. Bonk's Adventure
2. Castlevania
3. Duck Hunt
4. Excitebike
5. F-Zero
6. Kid Icarus
7. Legend of Zelda, The
8. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
9. Mario Kart 64
10. Metroid
11. Mortal Kombat
12. New Adventure Island
13. Ninja Gaiden
14. OutRun
15. Pac-Man
16. Prince of Persia
17. Punch-Out!!
18. R-Type
19. Rayman 2
20. Sonic the Hedgehog
21. Star Fox
22. Super Mario 64
23. Super Mario Bros
24. Super Mario Kart
25. Super Mario World
26. Tecmo Bowl

Additionally, there are at least five brand new, never seen titles in the works for launch on VC as well. Our source was not able to comment of specifics of these games, only that they are currently being developed.
Who knows? Anyone with more experience is free to pick apart this list. I'm interested in Duck Hunt. Without the original photo-receptor light gun, I'm curious how this will work. I suppose they'd have to reprogram it to use an on-screen reticule for the Wii remotes to give the user feedback. Maybe this isn't the original Duck Hunt anyway but the updated one they've been showing. Then again, maybe the whole list is bogus.

I dont' see why simple accessories would jack the cost up much. It was easy to find the Donkey Konga games with Bongos for $50 (some places sold for $60) and even cheaper if you waited a bit and looked for deals.

Something like a piece of plastic to stick the Wiimote in should be much cheaper than the bongo controller.

Darknite39 09-10-06 11:49 AM

Once a price is announced, stores will begin offering preorders...? (Stupid question, I suppose, but this will be the first time I've bought a system for myself.)

Yeah, there's a wide range of possible 'accessories'. Simple plastic frames--negligible cost, possible wide usage. And I guess many of the accessory/game manufacturers realize in the past gen or two that most people aren't going to pay a bunch of money for a limited accessory [Steel Battalion notwithstanding].
On the other hand, there's some of the accessories from Nintendo's history, that I don't necessarily want to see again, at least as they were....the pad, ROB, the glove.....

No. They will offer preorders once they know the quanity of units they are being alotted. The info is likely to come at the same time however.

What comes in the box might disappoint a few of you, though.
Who the hell would be disappointed with that package? Console, two wiimotes, WiiSports and an SD card? I might pick up a VC controller eventually, but I'd rather have two Wiimotes out of the box just so multiplayer is ready to go without extra costs. Not to mention the VC controller will surely be cheaper than the Wiimotes in store.

Kid Icarus in the first wave of VC games? Sweet. If that and Pit being in SSB:Brawl doesn't point to a Wii version in the works, I don't know what does.

I can't shake this Oct. 2nd vibe. The eternal optimist here.

Brent L 09-10-06 02:06 PM

What is the quickest that a system has been released after announcing the release date?

Drexl 09-10-06 03:24 PM

I don't care what comes with the system, as long as it's $200. I don't want them to add things I or others may not use just to make it $250.

Do we need a memory card? I thought the console had built-in storage, or is that just for settings? I could understand the need for VC games, but again, not everyone is going to use that.

Brent L 09-10-06 03:41 PM

I think the Wii is going to be insanely successful. For those people who are only going to buy two of the three new systems, I could see the majority of people that buy a 360 pick up the cheaper Wii, and those that buy the PS3 will also pick up the cheaper Wii. Then on top of all of that, all of those casual gamers who don't want to spend too much, or the parents trying to save a few bucks but still make their children happy could go for the Wii since it's cheaper.

And now, if it comes with two controllers and a game, that's even that much more inviting. Over time, it wouldn't shock me one bit to find out that there are more Wii systems in homes than 360 or PS3 systems.

Josh H 09-10-06 03:44 PM

I'm off the fence and going to get oen at launch. Traded a bunch of games in and have a $162.50 in credit at gamestop now, and may sell/trade my X-box in later as well.

pinata242 09-10-06 03:57 PM

Yeah, you don't need a Ph.D. to be our Dr. Wii, Josh. ;)

:D

I downgraded my Netflix account from 3 out to 1 out to make more time for gaming with the Wii and the DS games coming out this fall. :D

Supermallet 09-10-06 05:39 PM

4 days till we know...tick tock, tick tock. :D

Binger 09-10-06 06:01 PM

I may have missed this and I know that the games are going to be 480p, but are the games for the Wii, or at least the majority, going to be 16:9?

flashburn 09-10-06 06:05 PM

Yes.

Supermallet 09-10-06 06:34 PM

It'll be interesting to see if they try to anamorphically enhance the VC games.

Wii $150? Wii Wish.

Our bestest friends 4ever over at Kotaku just can't get enough of the Wii, and neither can Wii. See what we did there?

http://www.gizmodo.com/assets/resour...rice-thumb.jpg

They reported that Vibe magazine printed a flat $150 price under a description of the upcoming Nintendo Wii. Of course, in the same article Vibe needed to explain to their readers that the console is actually pronounced "wee", so the source isn't necessarily our number one pick for gaming news. Still, you never know who might be sleeping with high-level Nintendo execs, getting some Wii before everyone else. – Mark Wilson
