That means a lower MSRP which means more sales, or a lower production expense which means more profit if the (foolishly) decided to still pursue a $600 tag with this thing.
They have too much invested in convincing movie studios to go with BR not to have it standard on the PS3. If it were an add on, BR would probably be dead already.

Sony's Stock plummets on PS3 shortage news.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOKYO (Reuters) - Shares in Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, NEWS, Research) fell more than 3 percent by early afternoon on Thursday after a Japanese brokerage cut its rating on the electronics maker and its shipment target for the upcoming PlayStation 3 game console.

Mitsubishi UFJ Securities lowered its rating on Sony to "3" from "2" and slashed by half its estimate on PS3 sales for the current business year ending March 31 to 3 million units, citing difficulties in procuring enough cutting-edge parts.

The PS3, sometimes described as a high-performance home server disguised as a game machine, is powered by the Cell microchip, dubbed the "supercomputer on a chip," and equipped with a Blu-ray next-generation high-definition optical disc drive.

Sony shares were down 3.2 percent at 5,080 yen, underperforming the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index (.IELEC.T: Quote, NEWS, Research), which lost 1.51 percent.

A spokeswoman for Sony's game division, which in March delayed the PS3 launch to November from spring 2006, declined to comment.

Sony, which competes with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS: Quote, NEWS, Research) in the nearly $30 billion video game industry, aims to ship 6 million units of the latest version of its blockbuster game machine by March.

Slower PS3 sales would affect Sony's bottom line in a positive way in the short term as the company is expected to make a loss on each console it sells at the initial stage.

The Tokyo-based company said in April its game division would rack up an operating loss of 100 billion yen ($860 million) this business year.

It is not unusual for game makers to suffer substantial losses at the early stage of a console launch by setting prices low to spur sales. They typically rake in profits later through game software sales.

Just to get back on the 22G thing for a second. Assuming it's uncompressed, that means that there is going to be a shitload of potential load time. Unless the BW of the Blu-Ray drive is that high, I have a feeling we'll be seeing PSP-esque load times

It's news like this that is making it more likely that I will buy a PS3 just to sell on ebay.

That's what I plan on doing. You know the ebay morans will pay double to triple the retail price like they always do at console launches.

It seems like they were talking about a 2x drive. That isn't real fast for that big of a file.

PS3 will cure cancer?

Sony PlayStation 3 to Cure Cancer?
Aug 24, 2006 @ 3:53pm

Summary:
When it debuts this November, the PlayStation 3 won't just play games and Blue-ray movies: it will also help in the fight against cancer thanks to a Folding @ Home client that was announced today.

Full Text:
The PS3: More than a game machine

Started in October of 2000, Folding @ Home is a distributed computing project that harnesses a decentralized network of computers to perform complex mathematical simulations; in this case, of protein folding, which aids researchers in their quest to cure diseases such as Alzhemier's and Huntington's diseases, as well as certain forms of cancer.

The PS3, which Sony is positioning as more of a "computer," could make an ideal platform for the project. According to the project's website, the Cell processor that powers the PS3 should be able to produce performance that's equal to 100 gigaflops. 10,000 PS3's working in unison could reach a petaflop, or a thousand trillion floating point operations a second, which surpasses the performance of the fastest supercomputers in the world.

And PS3 owners who decide to take part in the initiative will gain something other than a sense of altruistic satisfaction: thanks to the PS3's powerful graphics hardware, the mathematical simulations will be rendered in real-time using visual treats such as HDR rendering. The client will also allow for real-time navigation of the models using the PS3 controller, giving interested observers a close-up view of simulations.

(More information about the Folding @ Home project can be found here .)

This reminds me of the PS2 launch when people were claiming that the PS2 was so powerful that it could launch missiles and Saddam Hussein was buying them all up.

What do ya know, MS makes misleading claims about their console too.

Story from 1up.com

LGC 2006: Konami Calls Foul on Microsoft
Winning Eleven is not exclusive to Xbox 360
.
by Sam Kennedy, 08/25/2006

At its press conference earlier this week, Microsoft made the announcement that Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer (known as winning Eleven to us) and EA's FIFA Soccer would both see a year's exclusivity on the Xbox 360, making its next-gen console "the platform" for soccer fans. This was seemingly a huge win for Microsoft, considering how popular Soccer is in the European and Asian territories.
Now, however, we're starting to hear a different story. Speaking with Winning Eleven producer/creator Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka earlier today, we learned that Microsoft made claims that were untrue. "The presentation was misleading," he told us. "We never said exclusive for one year on the next-gen platforms. We said this year. We were agreed that it was this year."

According to Takatsuka, Microsoft's claims have caused some issues for Konami (with Sony, no doubt), and he definitely wants to set the record straight. Winning Eleven is exclusive to the 360 for this year, but it's likely a case of necessesity (the PS3 game, which he confirmed is being worked on, isn't far enough along in development) rather than some major exclusivity deal with Microsoft. The PS3 version could ship as early as next spring, he admitted, though no timeframe has been set yet. The only thing certain is that it will absolutely not release before January 1, 2007.

Interestingly, although EA has no official comment on the matter yet, sources indicate that FIFA may not have a year's exclusivity window for next-gen platforms either.

So if i read that correctly, MS claimed that Winning Eleven was exclusive for a year, and then Konami confirmed that its "only exclusive for a year".

What the hell do we consider news anymore, that was the most pointless story ever.

I think Konami said 'this' year, so that would probably be until Dec 31st or maybe it's their fiscal year ending whenever that is.

As mrpayroll said, MS implied that it would have the soccer games as exclusives for a whole year, not just until the end of this year. Considering the PS3 isn't coming out until the middle of November, that's not much of an exclusive window.

Here is a quote from an IGN article on Microsoft's German Games Convention's press conference: "The big announcement for Microsoft Europe, however, was that it snagged Pro Evolution 6 (Winning 11 in North America) and FIFA '07 exclusively for Xbox 360 for the next 12 months, potentially leaving Sony out of the next-generation soccer market for a year."

I'm not saying Microsoft doesn't, but the quote you posted is about a game, not a console.

You're right. Basically the reason I put it like that was that they were at a European trade show, where soccer is huge, and saying the 360 would be the only next get console with a soccer game for the next 12 months. That would have moved some 360s if it had been true.

So PS3 won't have the 2006 version this calendar year. Will they bring out a PS3 version of the 2006 version next year when the exclusivity period expires? Or will they wait until the 2007 version and ship it across all platforms?

If it is the latter, then MS does indeed have a "year" of exclusivity for the title.

We're arguing semantics. MS says it's exclusive for a year, and then Konami says "not really a year, just until we take the time to make one for PS3". I still say the story is stupid.
