Even if you developed a large video game in 1080p, I can't even imagine how you wouldn't get framrate slowdown during gameplay.

If the PS2 can render Toy Story in real time surely the PS3 can output 3840x1080p with no loss in framerate.

Thank goodness Sadaam is behind bars, otherwise he'd be buying all those PS3s to launch nuclear missiles.

...But what about Iran!

NOOOOOOO!

Agreed, I said the same thing. Hopefully for the PS3, and gamers in general, this isn't true.
The article posted was from some unknown site from February. I dont think Sony ever promissed two HDMI outputs. It was on the prototype shown last year, but I dont think it was ever confirmed that it would come with two HDMI's standard.

I'm missing the distinction between promising a feature and showing a prototype with a feature. Isn't that one and the same?

Sony Going to Revise Production Numbers on PS3s?
Sony may be restating their 4 million unit estimate down to 2 million, thanks to troubles with Blu-ray diodes, their GPUs, and lousy Cell yields.

If Sony's even going to hit the 2.0 million mark, something Microsoft couldn't do in two months with less complicated hardware, it's a good thing they started making PS3s already. Wait, what do you mean they haven't started? – Jason Chen

Target shipment of Sony PS3 may be halved [Digitimes via Crunchgear]

Sounds like 'the Sony is about to hit the fan'!

From E3 2005

"The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, Internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video. Speaking of video, Sony Computer Entertainment's chief technical officer Masa Chatani was on hand to show off the PS3's panoramic video functions. Since the console has two HD outputs, it can be hooked up to two side-by-side HDTVs to projecting video in a 32:9 extra-widescreen format (think Cinemascope in your living room)."

That seriously would have been amazing to see. Id buy another twin projector and screen to do it too! But id think a 3-screen setup is ideal. Just not feasable at all.

Not only was two HDMI ports promised but so was PSP integration. Seems I remember Sony saying that the PSP could be used as a rear view mirror in a racing game for example.

They definitely did say that about using the PSP with GT5 as a rear view. Not sure if they still plan on doing it but it was said for sure.

That is actually true, they demo'd it at E3 06.

They also said they weren't interested in gimmicks in the same sentence.

This particular application of PS3/PSP connectivity makes no sense. I don't know what Sony was thinking with this one. How are you going to be able to easily glance at the PSP while right in the middle of playing a driving game on your TV? Even if you somehow got the PSP to stand upright on top of your TV, most people sit far enough from the TV that you wouldn't be able to see any useful detail on the PSP's screen. People like to give Nintendo shit for their Gamecube/GBA connectivity, but at least they thought of a couple of creative and practical uses for it. The best example is Zelda: Four Swords, and in that case, you never had to look at the GBA and the TV simultaneously. Hopefully Sony has some better ideas than "rear view mirror" up their sleeve.

How bout a 'motion detector' like in the Aliens movie (for a similar game)? You have the panic of knowing somethings coming--adds tension to the game, and you wont have to have a huge HUD on the screen to detract from the atmosphere.

Yeah, that's a pretty good idea - something like that could potentially work well. Now they just need to come up with some sort of PSP-holder that you could snap onto the PS3 controller so that you don't have to hold the controller and the PSP at the same time. Might be tough to come up with something like that that's sturdy without getting in the way of the controller's buttons or making it too hard to hold.

Why couldn't the PSP just be used AS the controller, like with the Cube/GBA stuff?

Well, it could, as long as the game doesn't require a second analog stick or the rear shoulder buttons...or the PS3 controller's revolutionary and ground-breaking tilt controls.

Thanks for the link. Do you remember is the Prez said that for sure the PS3 will have dual outputs or were they just showing it off on what turned out to be a prototype? If they said it will 100% be on the console and then left it out I would be displeased with that. I dont really care if it did have dual HDMI's because I would never use that, but I do know they they changed some specs on the unit from 05 ot 06.

I can't be bothered to download the 2005 Sony E3 Press Conference, let alone sit through it again, but I'm positive someone did say that. Regardless if it was a prototype or not, once you put something in the public eye, it is a feature. Later removing it is a backpeddle even if it came from a "blue sky" design session. If you're unsure in 2005, don't say it until 2006 when you are sure...

HDMI cable sold separately. Click on HDMI.

Like $600 isn't enough?

It still comes with a controller, right?

Here's something new to me. I thought it was going to be 100% BC with the PS1 and PS2? Now they're saying maybe not AND that it may not even play some BD discs? Hopefully they're covering their asses just in case and don't know something we don't know yet.

* Some PlayStation 2 or PlayStation format software titles may perform differently on this system than they do on PlayStation 2 or PlayStation systems, or may not perform properly on this system. In rare instances, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs and other media may not operate properly when played on the PS3 system. This is primarily due to variations in the manufacturing process or encoding of the software. For more info, visit www.us.playstation.com.

Both solutions include Blu-ray Disc™ the latest in high-definition* video, Bluetooth, four USB ports, 1080p video, and the advanced microprocessor, the Cell Broadband Engine™. The difference between them, however, is that the $599 system includes HDMI**, Memory Stick/SD/CompactFlash slots, Wi-Fi***, and a 60GB hard disk drive (HDD), whereas the $499 system comes with a 20GB HDD.
The only difference is the hard drive.

There are about 6 PS1 titles that cannot play on the PS2. I'm guessing we'll see a similarly small amount of PS1/PS2 titles that cannot work on a PS3. As for the other disclaimer, it's so when no one's PS3 plays Blu-ray discs, Sony can say, "Oh, we have a disclaimer about that. Therefore, it's not covered under our warranty."

While pretty shitty, it's not like a HDMI cable is gonna run you more than $10 or so, if you order it from monoprice.

Unless they change things and the system requires a proprietary cable, like the PS1/PS2 did.
