I have yet to have a problem with the save system. In fact, I usually have more saves than I ever need. So far, there has always been a restoom nearby when I needed it or food to replenish myself between saves. Probably helps that I have a map with the restrooms marked on it though.

For those with a memory card as well as a hard drive, you can alternate between devices with your saves. That helps if you need to take a step back when time becomes an issue or you missed something.

Also, I have some helpful links about achievements for Dead Rising in the most recent post of my blog for those interested.

Doing all this in the same game? Now that's a feat! Bet you're having lots of fun with that Double Lariat.

Right. I made a suggestion about this earlier...if you're not interested in resolving the cases at the very least you should complete them until you've completed this particular case to open up that gate. Otherwise, Entrance Plaza is a chore to get to.

A lot of people seem to think this shortcut is some sort of teleport. It is not. If you look above the sink, you will see a duct opening. That is the shortcut, not the mirror, magic, teleportation, etc.

I can't find the maintenance key. Is it part of a later case?

I'm fairly far in the cases now. I think I'm to 5-2 or 6-1.

Some of the survivors are stupid. They let themselves be swarmed with zombies and stop at the slightest hinderance.

Spoiler:
I was at the case where you meet Isabella at midnight. She's injured and you have to carry her to get her to the security room. Right at the same time, I met a survivor that had a shotgun that did some powerful damage. I managed to lead them through the courtyard and into the part of the mall with the door to go to the security room. He gets swamped with zombies and is shouting for me. I was more worried about saving Isabella at this point and left him. I figured he has a shotgun, he should be able to get to me and we can all go up to the security room.

Nope, he dies and I have to carry Isabella through the hallway to the eleveator all swarming with zombies.

Stupid suvivors.

I've lost so many survivors this round, I'm just going to do all the cases and complete the game. I can go through and play again trying to resuce everyone since I'll be stronger when I start the game over.

Spoiler:
I got the female cop, Jo. Man, she was a bitch. She killed on of the girls before I could kill her. I had read that if you leave the women in there, they would be safe. I guess that wasn't true. As I left them to do the first part of the Isabella mission, where you fight her on the motorcycle, the 3 women died in that room. I also lost the 2 survivors hanging from the big statue near the rollercoaster ride.

Speaking of which, I couldn't find the clown that is supposed to be in that area to turn off the ride and fight him.

And I really hate the cult. So far, I haven't been caught. Well, I was once, but died since I had no weapons and had to go back to a previous save. I killed them all and got Jennifer, who dies on the way back to the security room. Now, those stupid cultists are all over the mall.

I think Otis does give you a mission about the key later on, but you can just go get the key any time you want. Watch the video walkthrough:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6Dro8KWuJg

Essentually, you just grab the corvette in the parking lot and drive to center of the maintence tunnel map. The key is in a back room empty of zombies.

Yah, I finally noticed that last night. BTW, if anyone skipped freeing the hostage in the ride, you can go back at anytime to do it as long as you killed the clown. I didn't free him until 24 hours later. That shortcut is a godsend.

Yeah, last night I got Karate Champ, Gourmet, and all PP stickers. I'm trying to get genocider, but I don't think I have enough game time left. I went and found all the clothes I could, including stuff in those empty stores in North Plaza. I either missed something somewhere, or you have to put on unlockable clothes too, which would suck.

Double Lariat rocks!

The exact same thing happened to me. The problem with the survivors is, once they are actually grabbed by zombies, they are useless no matter how handy their weapons are. They can't seem to save themselves from that situation. You have to go knock the zombies off them. On my second game I went back to this area but I had let my cases expire.
Spoiler:
Kindell is still there, though, but I managed to keep him safe without Isabella on my back. Otherwise the only way I could see doing this is to somehow get Kindall and Isabella into a safe area like deep in an empty store. Go out and clear away all the zombies, then go back and get them when its safe enough. Or if you get them on top of that scaffolding somehow (the one with the cardboard box and no zombies) that would be perfect as Kindell could blast zombies with his unlimited shotgun while in safety. But I don't know if either will jump that high up.

Yeah, I found it nearly impossible to do all the cases AND rescue all the survivors on the first go-through. There's just not enough time, especially when you're unfamiliar with the mall and are at a low level. I think I saved nine people the first time, and that's including Otis.

I think once you 'activate' the survivors, meaning you go into the area of the mall they are in to get them to appear, they will lose health as soon as you leave that area. I've left people I hadn't even talked to, who were in safe areas, and when I came back they were in the same safe spot but their health was depleted. But if I left them for the same amount of time and stayed in that mall area they were fine in the safe spot. This doesn't count for the instance you mentioned though, because once that's triggered
Spoiler:
Jo will attack the girls whenever you're not there to attack. She's attacking SOMEONE.

This game is very frustrating to me. i finally finished 2.3, and got back with the medicine. The case came up as finished, but then it said I failed the rest of the cases? What the hell I thought I was in time. I think I too am going to have to put this game on half. I wish there were a mode were you could just free roam the mall and kill, like in the demo. I would enjoy that more than all the timed missions.

You know you don't have to do the missions, right? If you let them expire, just pick 'Return to Game' instead of load or save and you can continue the remainder of the 72 hours, which is more than enough time to screw around. Heck, if you take too long in the beginning before you get to the hallway to Paradise Plaza from the warehouse (which triggers the first case cutscene), the cases won't even appear at all. They won't really expire, they just never show up and are never referenced. As for Otis, the calls will be annoying, but once you answer them you don't have to do those missions either.

The first game I started I kept waiting for the case to start but it never did, because I screwed too long. I think I had wasted an hour of gametime before I even made it to the 'head up the stairs' part, between trying on outfits in the security room to checking out all the stores in Entrance Plaza.

(Which is funny... they are trying to board up the front doors with benches and whatnot, but why not just send everyone up to the second floor and then barricade the stairs? Then you have the second floor AND the other side of the gate of the first floor AND the security room to hang around in. Hell, even when you return to that back area for the first time later it is safe until Brad opens up the gates. Even if they get through your barricade you can still go back to the security room and weld the door shut THEN. But I digress...)

Man, I love that Capcom allowed for costumes to be worn during any cutscene rather than defaulting back to the starting outfit! The majority of the game, I've been dressed in:
  • Girl's Daisy Duke Jean Shorts - shows off my hairy legs.
  • Tight Green Shortsleeved Top - shows off the gut.
  • The foam Yellow Smiley Mask

I swear, some of those serious cutscenes are a hell of alot more fun dressed as an idiot.

Yeah. It's hard to take Frank seriously when he's got the daisy dukes, tiny shirt, socks pulled up to his knees, yellow sunglasses, and a MegaMan helmet.

The acting in the cutscenes is funny and the dialogue is down right embarrassing at times.

There is a scene where I am suppose to meet up with Isabella because she is bringing her brother...
Spoiler:
She arrives by herself, bleeding from the arm. Apparently her brother used a firearm and shot her. Then the main character Frank says, "He shot you?" in a tone that implies utter and complete shock. Funny thing is, the way I defeated her just a few minutes before this was with a handgun and sniper rifle, making about 5 or so headshots.

Duh!

Get captured by the psychos in the rain coats. They'll strip you down to your underwear. Next, go to the cuttlery shop next to Seon's grocery store (I think this is called North Plaza) and get your head shaved bald. Grab yourself a King Salmon and mingle with the Tomkins twins back at the Security room.

I wish you could take a picture of that.

A few small tips I haven't seen mentioned here yet:

* If you are carrying the toy laser sword in your inventory, it will make the area around you much easier to see at night. It doesn't even have to be equipped, it just has to be in your inventory.

* If you are trying to photograph the PP stickers, if you've already taken a picture of that sticker a red check will appear over it. It's an easy way of telling if you've already taken a picture of it, because with certain stickers the percentage indicator won't appear unless you're taking the picture from the right angle/distance.

You finished 2.3 after the time at which the next case was scheduled to start; therefore, you missed the next case. Once you miss a case, you lose the trail and miss all subsequent ones. Time management is critical in this game, but it really isn't that hard if you just pay attention to the time cases start and make sure you don't savegame yourself into a position from which it is impossible to complete the next case on time.

Someone named WildAttorney over at the Xbox forums posted an awesome walkthough for Dead Rising:

While an excellent game, Dead Rising can be frustrating due to its difficulty and the emphasis that the save system places on staying alive. Planning ahead and understanding the game mechanics are vital to your very survival and getting the most out of your time in the Willamette mall.

Day One

Your main base of operations is the mall's security room which opens to a helipad, an air vent, and a hallway. After your initial encounter with the zombies at the mall's main entrance, you will return to this security room and watch as Otis the janitor welds the hallway door shut. This is good, as you do not want to see another zombie again for the rest of the game.

Now the only entrances through which zombies could potentially enter the security room are:

- An air vent
- The helipad

Unfortunately Otis will not weld the air vent shut, presumably because a man named Brad just climbed through said vent and it is his only route back to safety. Talking to Otis multiple times will not convince him to weld the vent, and there are no welding tools to be found in the security office that would allow you to do it yourself. For now you'll have to be content with simply staying as far away from this air vent as possible. Otis will serve as a miner's canary from now on. If you hear him scream, run.

The helipad is on a rooftop island surrounded by barbed wire, which means no zombie can gain access to it unless he is the reanimated corpse of a skydiver that died of a heart attack mid-jump. Just to be safe you will, of course, want to have Otis weld this door shut, but once again reasoning with the man gets you nowhere. This is a blessing in disguise, as your helicopter ride to safety will arrive on this very helipad in 72 hours.

For now, make your way to a secluded room halfway between the helipad and the air vent in case zombies come pouring through one of the entrances. Now the waiting game begins.

At seven o'clock at night, the zombies' eyes glow red and everything gets scarier. Back up into one corner of the room as far as you can possibly go, making sure to face the door so nothing can sneak up on you.

Day Two

On day two, you might begin to feel a little restless. Venture out to the helipad and look around at the sky, just in case the helicopter pilot misheard you and thought he had to pick you up today. Stay out there until it gets dark, then run back inside.

Make your way to the room with the bank of security cameras. A blonde woman with impressively lifelike breasts will be seated at the security panel. She refuses to speak to you, which is to be expected. For now pick up the apple on the floor and eat it, then spend the rest of the night drinking coffee creamer and taking pictures of the woman pretending to ignore you.

Day Three

As soon as your final day begins, drink all of the warm spoiled milk sitting next to the blonde woman and run to the helipad. Position yourself so that your body blocks the door, just in case some zombies infiltrate the security room. The key here is to keep yourself busy without thinking of the shambling figures who want to eat you in the parking lot below. Pressing Start to read through everything in the menu and look at the map pauses the game (which of course means that no time passes), so don't bother.

Once it gets dark, realize that although there are 72 hours in three days, you were dropped off in the afternoon of the first day. The helicopter won't be back until tomorrow afternoon. Go back inside and stare at the blonde girl some more.

Day Four

As soon as day four begins, rush outside. In fact, if you can, get there a little early in case the pilot has his watch set to another timezone. By now your camera's batteries will have died, so there goes one source of entertainment. There are, in fact, a few camera stores inside the mall where you could get a recharge, but there are zombies in there.

Wait at the foot of the helipad's stairs so you're as close to the landing spot as possible. If you want to you can walk up and down the stairs for fun, but walk down backwards so the helicopter doesn't land when you're facing in the other direction.

Eventually, the helicopter will come.

Congrats on beating the game!

General Tips

- The main point of the game is to stay somewhere quiet and safe for as long as possible, far from the reach of zombies. Adding a custom soundtrack with your favorite tunes will help the hours go by.

- As soon as you set foot on the helipad, run around and jump wildly. There is a small chance that your spastic gesturing will be seen by the pilot and he'll come back for you.

- Once you've completed 72 Hour Mode you have the option of playing Overtime Mode, which allows you to return for the mall for another 24 hours. Don't do this. It can only expose you to more zombies.

- Don't be a hero. You'll probably see a number of survivors on the security cameras, holed up in abandoned stores as the dead claw at them through hastily constructed barricades. The best thing you can do for them is look away or go to the helipad to see if your chopper has arrived early. Going out there can only end in death or inconvenience.

I'm stuck again and it's in regards to Kent.
Spoiler:
Any tips on how to defeat Kent when he ties you up and takes away all your items? Surprisingly, the bullets don't really hurt, but when he gets close and kicks you, it takes away a ton of energy. And I'm already at level 50 with max health!

NM, I got it.
Spoiler:
I just kept doing the double lariet when he got close. The previous 4 times I tried to fight him, he'd kick me, and I'd be stunned, and he'd keep kicking me til I just about died. This time though he gave me enough space to move.

Just as an FYI, had you gotten to the area where Kent appears a little earlier than you did, you would have been able to stop him from killing the other guy and would not have been stripped and tied up.

Question to those who have beaten the game....

Spoiler:
Where can I find zombie Brad? I saw the cutscene where he turns, but I can't seem to find him.

I'm not sure if he wanders around, but I found him immediately after the the bomb mission in front of the door where you find the maintanence key. There's actually a cutscene as soon as you enter that hallway section, so you'll know if he's there or not.

Spoiler:
Do you know where the parking lot is with the convertible and motorcycle? Take the car into the maintenence section and when you enter, make a right, then take your first left, then take your first right. If you went the right way, there should be a door in that hallway. When you go through this door, the maintanence key should be in the back corner.

Or you can just watch this video that shows where it is.
