I got him with the handgun as well. It does bother me though that when you hold the right trigger to aim your gun or throw it suddenly makes you aim with the left stick instead of the right like every other fps. Confuses me every time.
edit: one time i ran out of pistol ammo and ended up beating him with the 12 pack of soda. I love how you throw cans out of it at him.

I'm killing time between story missions by trying to get the cult (I got captured last time). I took down most of them with the sword but they eventually killed me. I'll probably try again since there's alot of time between the next mission (8 hours I think).
On the half.com comment, as soon as I finish it, I think my copy is destined for there too. This game would have made a great rental had I still had Gamefly but in its current form I can't see any desire in wanting to replay it.

This game is great. I had no problem beating 72 hours + Overtime to get the true ending (other than the final boss, which took me a few tries). I like the save system and the timed missions. It adds to the survivalistic element because you do have to make choices about what scoops to do, whether you have time to do them and still make it to the case, and when to save to make sure you don't screw yourself out of a case. The thing to realize is that you get an ending no matter how you finish the game--i.e. even if you miss a case, you get an ending provided that you last 72 hours. It may not be the ending you want, but that just means you didn't plan things well enough. Try again. It is not that hard.

I finally started to play the game....my batteries ran dead on my camera, so I have to find the charge place. The game is fun so far....LOTS to do, but not sure what I want to do. I'm trying to stick to the MAIN chapters....maybe eventually I'll go back and do the side missions also. Fun stuff though.

Yep. When you come out of the door from the warehouse, turn to the right, go forward a few steps, the camera store will be on your right. It's on the same wall as the door you came out of.

Having finally beat this game and beatign overtime, I'm on my second playthrough. This time I have ignored the cases and am concentrating on achievements and other things I didn't get around to the last time.
I just got screwed trying to save some survivors.

I am having a really hard time killing the 3 convicts while I make may way back to the part of the mall where the vent is. As soon as I come out the door they attack me and I barley even have enough time to eat a food item before they kill me and the survivors. How they hell are people getting around this? Are you guys using the matientence tunnels when escorting survivors or what? Killing the convicts when coming from the part of the mall with the vent is easy, I just can't get back to it.

Here's my take on the game. I've already completed the game once and starting again so I've got a pretty good idea of what Capcom was aiming for here:
The game is challenging when you first start out, but Capcom wants you to complete the game multiple times because you couldn't possibly complete all the quests/side quests with one play through. Also, it would be very difficult to level up to the max (Level 50) with one play through (I'm not even sure it's possible). So, as you level up and play through again, things are a little easier (i.e. a level 1 Frank would have to do multiple whacks with a bat to defeat a zombie. A level 30 Frank does it in one swing).
The game is short, true. But this was by design. You have to play through the game multiple times to reveal the different endings. How many of you are likely to play through a game mutiple times when the game requires >50 hours to complete?
To answer the question about whether or not the game grabs you and keeps you coming back....
Well, I think there is enough re-playability in this game. I'm always finding something new, that is, if you're the type that likes to be rewarded for venturing off the commonly traveled road. Also, some of the coolest things are found if you do a little experimenting. For example, there's a clothing station that lets you walk around barefoot; doing the double lariat while holding a lead pipe has the potential to launch the pipe straight into a zombie's gut then you see blood pour out the open end of the pipe (awesome!); the rat stick is one of the most weakest weapons to whack at a zombie, but try throwing it (so sweet!). Also, I haven't seen it mentioned here, but what do you guys think about the Battle Axe? One of my favorites no doubt. Guns suck in this game (sans the one on the convicts jeep), but I believe that was by design. The game encourages you to either swing or throw something because they yield the most favorable results.
THE SAVE SYSTEM SUCKS! I needed to vent that one. Sorry.
Find where all the restrooms are and save. If you're on your way to a side quest, save. When you've got survivors en tow, save before getting back to the security room. This is the only way to remedy the horrible save system.
Dead Rising gets a great score in my book but I have to emphasize that mutiple play throughs is a MUST to fully appreciate this game.

Damn!
Didn't realize I was ranting just now! LOL! So, so sorry.
Anyways, after you beat some of the psychos, you can take their weapons but they are also limited, that is, they will break after use. Does anyone know where to find them again? I'm looking especially for Adam's (Pennywise dude) and Cliff's (War vet) weapons.

Cliff's machete is on the floor in front of the chainsaws in Crislips.

Oh, and Something Awful has a funny piece about the game today:

Otis put me on the trail of a photographer hanging out in a coffee shop on the second floor. The guy was giggling like a girl when I found him and he didn't seem to be too bothered by the zombies walking around the mall. He said I was a shitty photographer. Hey, maybe I'm not good at taking erotic pictures of pantyhose on dead bodies, but I didn't really want to have that conversation.
They're tearing chunks off of me every time I turn the corner and Otis is paging me like a drunk making bootie calls.

This may have already been posted, but I'm not digging though the thread.
Someone is working on an interactive Dead Rising Map that lists Gun locations, blade locations, etc. It's very incomplete at the moment, but it's something to keep an eye on: http://home.apex.net/~acrunk/deadrisingmap.html
