I don't have the disk read issue but have noted that it seems to take quite some time to load levels and there is a lot of drive noise (I think it is normal spinning, no grinding). Assuming this is normal, but just thought I'd ask the board to see.

redbill 03-10-08 02:10 PM

i noticed my loading was loud also. didn't notice long-load times though

I'm in the small percentage that has to send their Wii's in to get fixed. Sux.

BBEANLPHIE 03-10-08 03:15 PM

By fixing do you mean that the game itself will not play or once you get the error you start having problems with all games?

edytwinky 03-10-08 05:22 PM

My Wii also sounds really loud while spinning. Was starting to worry me.

slop101 03-10-08 05:32 PM

This is the first double-layered disc for the Wii, and I think that's where the problems are stemming from.

edytwinky 03-10-08 06:24 PM

How do you unlock Event Stages 21 and up?

I've beaten 1-20 already and 21 didn't come up.

Supermallet 03-10-08 06:30 PM

I played this for six hours yesterday, ended up cramping my hand so bad I could barely make a fist.

The game rocks. It has pretty much everything that made the last games great, and more. I love how the levels are a little more interactive now. The online play is laggy at times, but I haven't encountered anything so bad as to be unplayable. My biggest problem is with characters who feel superfluous. Do we need Ike AND Marth? Ness AND Lucas? They're virtually the same thing. Also, the controls really aren't suited to the side-scrolling nature of the Subspace Emissary, making some of the levels far more difficult than I think they were assigned to be. But those are nitpicks, overall the game is great.

Ringo20000 03-10-08 08:17 PM

Does anyone know a way to delete a profile? I keep playing games under the name player 1 by accident so my stats aren't going to be correct.

Supermallet 03-10-08 09:22 PM

Player 1 is the default generic player name. You need to manually switch it to your profile. I wish they could just have a toggle, so once you're logged in, you're logged in for every mode.

I beat the Classic Mode in Hard with Link and was able to unlock Ganandorf but not Toon Link. When I went back and played Classic Mode in Easy as Link, it did not unlock Toon Link for me. Any idea why?

pinata242 03-10-08 11:32 PM

I spent 4 hours or so on the Subspace story. Got about 40% through it. It sure is fun and really a lot longer than I expected. Great way to introduce the new fighters and reintroduce the old ones.

Haven't touched anything else yet.

After beating SSE, finish the Classic mode as Link or play 400 VS matches.

Because that's not how you unlock him. There are 3 ways to do it,
1: beat the entire adventure mode on any difficulty, then play classic mode on any difficulty with any character and after the masterhand battle, he will appear.
2: After you beat the adventure mode once, go to the Forest level and enter the first door you see.
3. 400 battles later he will appear as a challenger.

The secret characters have more than 1 way of unlocking them. 400 battles is quite a lot of play....

Having spent some quality time with this, I have a few observations/opinions about this game:

- Calling the adventure mode/SSE frustrating is putting it nicely. I've died way too many times as a result of the characters not jumping the way that your average platformer character jumps. However, I do appreciate that it more or less forces me to use and get good with characters I otherwise wouldn't spend time using.
- I'm not a fan of the Wiimote/nunchuck control method. I find that pressing A+B at the same time doesn't always register as A+B, which is annoying. Too bad I don't have my Wavebirds anymore. :(
- Ultimately, there isn't much that's new to this game over Melee.
- Why the hell is the Wiimote not used to select menu items/characters!? As far as I can tell, this game makes ZERO use of the motion controls.

That all seems kinda negative, but I still like the game. Overall, I'd rate this game as mildly disappointing, but my expectations were ridiculously high. I'll still spend countless hours with it.

fumanstan 03-11-08 12:37 PM

I played this for a few hours last night at my friend's place, using Gamecube controllers. Pretty fun, but it didn't feel like anything new to me, at least as far as just brawling went. We created a couple stupid levels that were hilariously fun to run around in due to spikes and giant characters. I didn't care for Snake, Sonic, or really any of the new characters other then Pit.

Also went through all of the events on easy, tried the 100 man brawl which was kind of cool, and the home run thing was a silly diversion. Loading times on some stages was annoying, especially hearing the disc spin, but then again not terrible considering some 360 and PS3 games.

I'm not a huge Smash Bros. guy, but it was pretty fun, but I probably see it the same way others say Madden doesn't change other then roster updates.

Quick question about SSE. On the map after you beat a level it shows that level with a green flag in it to tell you you beat it. Recently some older ones have been showing up flashing instead of the flag. When you select it you essentially play it again while choosing the difficulty and what characters you want to use. I did this beating one on one level harder and I didn't really get anything.

What is the point of these replay missions?

Is it a rainbow-ish flashing crown? If so, I think that's to denote that it was a "boss" level.

Pbear 03-11-08 03:07 PM

On SSE, I think the crown indicates that you have found all the doors and orange boxes. The green flags mean that you have passed the level, but there are other things to do. I'm basing this off the fact that when I went back the second go around to get Jigglypuff, wolf, and toon link in SSE, the green flags for those levels turned into crowns.

rocketsauce 03-11-08 03:18 PM

yeah it looks like a flashing crown, but i don't think its boss levels. i just finished the one with pikachu and zero suit samus and as soon as i beat it, it turned to the crown.

also what are the "papers" that you pick up during levels? are these the stickers you get at the end?

Yup, those are the stickers. :)

rocketsauce 03-11-08 03:45 PM

what i don't get is how you use them if every new level you are introduced and use a new character? once in awhile you will use someone again but you don't know who or when so why waste the sticker? but then again im only like 20% through it so maybe it changes.

Yeah, the sticker system is a little strange. The fact that you can't remove them makes them tough to use effectively, so I just slap a few on the characters I use the most.

runner001 03-11-08 05:06 PM

what exactly are the stickers supposed do?

They just add enhancements to a character's stats. When you go to apply one, it'll tell you which stat it affects and by how much.
