It will be a lot of people's second system, but not because it's cheap and thus people think it's inferior, but simply because most people want all the 3rd party games and halo's, final fantasy's etc. that Sony and MS have as exclusive over Nintendo's first party games.
But of course, there are those like me and the previous two posters who will by it first as there's an exception to everything.

I bet it is safe to assume that it will be more 360 owners second system vs. PS3 owners. The release window allows it. I doubt gamers want to drop a grand on two systems(PS3, Rev) in the span of a month or two.

That's how I did it this gen. Gamecube at launch, PS2 right after $199 price drop, and X-box was $199 as well when I bought it for KOTOR.

Revolution to Include Parental Controls
11/16/2005, 2:02pm Eastern Time
Nintendo announced today that their next generation system, codenamed Revolution, will include what they call a “Play Control System.” It will allow parents to restrict what games their children can play.
Parents will be able to restrict games of particular ratings from playing on the Revolution through a password protected system. The password will allow adults to bypass the security. In the U.S., the system will allow users to restrict games based on the ESRB ratings system of E for Everyone, E+10 for Everyone 10 and older, T for Teen, and M for Mature. Other countries will base restrictions off of the rating system they currently use.
To accomplish this, each Revolution game will have its rating embedded into the disc. The system will then read the rating from the disc, and employ any protection that has been configured. Even though game ratings are currently listed on the front and back of every game sold, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, says this will help parents monitor their children.
“Even though many Nintendo games are rated E, E10+ or T, we believe this kind of feature should be included in the hardware,” says Fils-Aime. “It's the right thing to do.”

That previous post is a joke, for anyone concerned... (Partially true, but not 100%)
The real reason is that no one has taken the time to develop a content rating system before. Nintendo is not taking the high road here, simply making a wise business decision considering the current environment.

Yeah, as much as I am getting sucked into the hype of this thing, I think that last post proved that maybe I should start falling out of playing videogames altogether.

My Dream scenerio:
What would be the ideal launch for this system and have me race to the store. Around 20 launch titles filled with nostagic characters as well as brand new games that would turn heads.
Lets see.
Super Mario Brothers Revolution. A whole new 3D game, but I would like to base itself off the classic titles like Mario 3 and World as far as characters, etc.
The Legend of Zelda
Super, Super Metroid (lame title, but u get the point)
Kid Icarus 3
Super Smash Brothers 3
Super Mario RPG 4 or Paper Mario 3 (however you count this)
Earthbound: The Mystic Atmosphere
Mario Kart Revolution
Donkey Kong Country Revolution
Animal Planet (Animal Crossing 3)
Super Monkey Ball: The Balls Bounce Back
A revival 2-D collection which would include an all new Mario Land, Zelda adventure ala Link to the Past, and a side scroller Metroid. Sort of like how the DS has become a home for 2-D titles.
Wireless options that allow us to play all out nostalgic 2-D games right out of the box.
Some new quirky powerful titles that are fresh and fun for all ages.
This system needs M rated games as well too. A Horror one & Action one for example. Ones that would turn into the next Resident Evil & Grand Theft Auto. This system also needs a shooter in the vein and on par with Halo, but different.
Off subject, but I always thought someone should make a Horror based video game where you have to jouney through different horror worlds from popular horror films. Sort of Like Zelda or Kingdom Hearts, but using horror themed worlds from all the most popular horror movies and/or franchises. Maybe made by Square. Of course rights would be hell and all but impossible.
That would be a powerful launch that would bring all my childhood nostalgia back and be knocking people down to get one.

Solid read on some western developer's impressions of the Revolution to date:

Good article
This is why I will probably be getting one a year after it launches and sees a price drop. Will be tons of fun for party games.
Tom Fulp (The Behemoth): Revolution seems more geared towards family fun, so games of epic scope seem less necessary. There is concern about games being too gimmicky and not having long-term replay value beyond the initial concept, but I have confidence that many games will be addictive and provide long-term enjoyment with friends. There will be must-have games, as well as some duds. I think the games produced by Nintendo will be worth the price of admission. If long-term play becomes an issue, they could always make a game where you perform daily exercises with the pointer and watch your character get bulked up over time.

I know the party games will be fun, but I do still want games with depth. If a developer has a good idea I hope they don't feel the need to add some worthless little minigame to try and make a use for the controller. I want the controller to service the games, not the other way around.

Not really surprised but from gonintendo.com:
Nintendo to fully unveil Revolution on May 9th
November 28th, 2005
Nintendo will be showing off the Revolution in full force at E3, and they want you to know. A few select people that attended E3 last year have received emails directly from Nintendo letting them know that the Big N is ready for this year’s E3. This email is 100% credible, no worries of rumors here. Check out the entire email below.
You’re probably just starting to plan your time for 2006. With a mere 165 days to go (give or take), it’s time to start thinking about next year’s E3. Nintendo is most certainly thinking about it. So pencil us in. You’ll hear all the incredible details about Nintendo’s upcoming games and hardware, including our next home console, code-named Revolution. You won’t want to miss it. See you there.
WHAT: Nintendo’s E3 Media Briefing
WHEN: Briefing begins at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2006.
WHERE: Kodak Theatre (home of the Academy Awards), Hollywood & Highland Center, 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028
WHY: You know why.
Nintendo means business, and they want the video game bigwigs to know it. Come this E3, I bet you Nintendo blows the roof off the covention center, and comes out of the show with a massive victory. An extremely aggressive Nintendo…I like it.

Now that Nintendo is showing off the full Revolution next May at E3, what is a likely release date? Around August or September?
I'm leaning more and more on getting a Revolution as my next console. For one, I'll be able to afford one at launch price, assuming it'll be around $200. They have great first party games. Hopefully they'll have a great launch lineup. Being able to download the old classics is also a nice bonus.
