To play MMORPGs 360 owners will need to pay 3 different fees. ISP, XBox Live, and the MMORPG-operators. XBox Live is another middleman that PC gamers don't need to pay. It makes the 360 less appealing.

I believe you can play MMO's with just Xbox Live silver, which is free.

fujishig 02-24-06 02:09 PM

Yes, FFXI is available to Xbox Live silver members...

mrpayroll 02-24-06 03:15 PM

That is why I have never gotten into MMO's. I won't pay a monthly fee of $10 to play a game that I might only play less than 10 hours a week.

Why should these types of games charge a monthly fee that high, when we can play all of the XBox Live games 24/7 for $60 a year?

I have a quick question about backward compatibility. I seperated all my old xbox games today based on compatibility and so I threw Ghost Recon in and tried it out. When I tried to use live, it told me there was an update to xbox live that needed to be downloaded before I could play. If I download this will it screw up my 360? I thought the old xbox games would still work on the new live???

Ghost Recon was added to the BC list after launch. The update didn't cause me any problems.

How about a cheap one brother? Damn good price for this. :) http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=TC3J-2066

Edit* I forgot to mention this deal ends today!

RichC2 02-25-06 10:11 PM

I fel tthe need to post this for no reason :P

Cycle of the 360:
September 05 - Didn't want one
October 05 - Played one, kind of piqued my interest
November 05 - really didn't want one
December 05 - Decided I'd get one for the hell of it, after weeks of waking up early to check Target, I got one the Thursday before Xmas.
Late December 05 - Pretty much regretted buying the system.
January 06 - Mildly entertained by it, though a huge waste of money
Late January 06 - Fight Night 3 demo, faith restored
February 06 - I love this system and greatly anticipate several March '06 releases.

I'm such a schmuck.

But you're happy with your purchase so...

More power to you. I love mine too.

Another one bites the dust. I was playing Amped 3 and it froze a once. I turned it off and ate dinner. I went to fire it up and it froze again. I then ejected the disc only to find I was getting the red ring of light :( I tried unplugging everything as instructed and I was able to get it to boot to the XBox 360 screen but then it beeps and freezes. I'm within the 90 day period but I hear there are sending back defective units as repairs? That and I have heard there are issues with XBox live accounts? Can anyone enlighten me? Also, I bought the unit on 1/3. Can I still get the warranty through Microsoft just in case this thing dies on me again after my 90 days are up?
Also, do I have to send my harddrive and everything else back or can I send just the console?
Edit-just got off the phone, they are sending me a box and i have to send the console and HD. I am going bring my HD to my brothers and borrow my brother's memory unit and back my stuff up on there.
He also said to call back once I get the new console and I can purchase the extended warranty. Here's hoping this is quick. It figures to I was really starting to enjoy Amped 3!!

brkhrt7 02-27-06 07:52 PM

Mine did the same thing a couple days ago. It freezes with or without the hard drive so I'm not sending the hard drive in with the system. It sure seems like a lot of systems are defective out there.

The key is "seems." No one gets on the Internet to post, "My Xbox 360 has been working great since I got it at launch." Well, mine has. So, has 95% of those of others. With a piece of electronics as complicated as the Xbox 360 (or PS2, PS3, you name it), you are going to have defective units. It happens. Microsoft will fix or replace it. The problem with replacements not working with Xbox Live is unfortunate and probably the result of Microsoft's aggressive protections against cheating and hacking on Xbox Live (which is a good thing usually). I hope, but do not know, that this has been fixed by now.

Cardiff Giant11 02-27-06 08:58 PM

all I know is that if if my replacement system does not work with XBox live there will be hell to pay. I prepaid a year and would fully expect MS to reimburse my for that and allow me to create a new account if need be.

Burnout revenge trailer is out on the market place . 720p format

MasterofDVD 02-27-06 10:53 PM

Just wanted to let everyone know the Burnout theme is pretty sweet but the picture pack is only 2 pictures and they are kinda lame. Anything is better than the one I've had the past few weeks but neither picture is all that great.

Yeah, mine died on me when MS had that automatic update. I got my replacement and it was defective. Basically, the console worked, but I could not get onto XBOX Live. Something MS did, and they are NOW aware of the problem. SO, I had to send my box back in again. I'm still waiting to get my replacement box back. The only good thing is that I'm supposed to get a free wireless controller and 1 month of LIVE back, but I may bitch for more...since I think the whole ordeal has been more than a month. Cardiff, I don't think you would be able to get back on IF you got a defective unit. Basically, it just will NOT log you into LIVE. They will ship pretty quick since everything is next-day air. I hope to get mine back today or tomorrow. I'll let you know if it works.

When was that automatic update? I want the exact date my console died.

My unit was defective out of the box on 11-22. I finally got around to sending it back and they sent me a brand new one. Only took about 5 business days, which was excellent. I called and bought the extended warranty (if you haven't done that yet....). New box works great, no problems.

I understand the frustration, but you really have to give it to them for being nice on the phone (in my experience) and prompt with dealing with the issues that arise.

DJ_Longfellow 02-28-06 09:08 AM

Yeah, the MS reps are helpful, but I'm frustrated because they shipped me back a console that was defective. They did NOT test the refurb they shipped back to me (and apparently hundreds of others). I guess they just disabled LIVE on all refurbs during a short period of time. Poor quality control, but decent customer service. Although, I had to call back for them to ship my "coffin", so that took off 3 days of my time to ge the console shipped back.

I have a feeling they will forget my 360 controller and 1-month extension on my account.

I found out that my initial console died on 1/29/06....so, it's been a month without LIVE.

Can someone help me out with NHL06? As I said before I am not much of a gamer. I went through a complete season with no issues, but now when I try to start the playoffs, I can't seem to be able to control my players. It looks like it is on a different level (maybe sim?). Anyway, I can't figure it out, and don't have the patience to play around with it.

Anyone know what I am talking about?

No clue...did you choose your team with the controller at the team select screen? I'm surprised you got through a season. I got about 30 games and the freeze issue.

Canis Firebrand 02-28-06 01:00 PM

I had to send in my unit yesterday when I received the coffin, after I called on Thursday.

I guess I was a bit lucky and they let it slide since it was defective hardware. But, I bought my 360 on 11/22. It died and I called on 2/23, which is about 94 days. I never purchased the extended warrenty through MS. I kept meaning to, but never got around to it. I was sweating that they were going to tell me I could ship it to them to fix, but I'd have to pay.
When I get a unit back and have the new S/N, I'm going to sign up and hope they don't hassle me since it is over 60 days since I bought the unit. If things go right, I should have a unit by friday, even though they told me wednesday(next wednesday not tomorrow) originally. Its going to be delivered to the service center today. And if they ship one out tomorrow or thursday, it should be here Friday. Monday at the latest.

Amtech Research analyst predicts 10-12 million Xbox 360 sales by year end

Paul Loughrey 14:55 28/02/2006

Negative impact on third party software sales no longer a concern?

Senior analyst P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research has stated that Microsoft's much publicised component shortages for the Xbox 360 are over, suggesting that the company is back on track to sell 10-12 million units worldwide by year-end.

According to McNealy's report, Microsoft is likely to shift 6 million consoles by June this year. The mid-year forecast eclipses Peter Moore's comments at the recent CES show in Las Vegas, in which the Xbox boss lowered initial sales estimates and offered a more conservative goal of 4 to5.5 million units by June.

Third party publishers, the majority of which have cited Xbox 360 supply issues as a contributory factor in lower than expected financial results, are likely to see a swift return to normality in McNealy's opinion. The analyst expects significant improvements in the quarter results.

The report included a survey of current Xbox 360 stock levels in 125 retailers which appears to somewhat contradict McNealy's optimistic forecast, revealing just 26 stores having units in stock - and all but five of those only having the Core system (minus hard drive and wireless accessories) available. Supply in the stores with units available was also extremely low, with most retailers holding a maximum of 3 units each.

UK supplies have definitely improved in recent weeks - a GameStation representative told GamesIndustry.biz that regular deliveries of both Core and Premium units are now beginning to materialise, and pre-launch orders are now all but fulfilled in the majority of stores UK-wide. That said, sales are going to have to spike pretty quickly if the Amtech estimates are to be achieved by June.

McNealy also offered some opinion on the availability of launch information for Sony's PS3, suggesting that this week's PlayStation Destination event could put an end to the intense rumour and speculation that has surrounded the industry for months.

"We expect Sony to give some directional information on the PS3 about launch plans and pricing, but we believe it is more likely that Sony will keep its commentary to a high level about the PS3 rather than specifics." the report stated. It is also suggested that more information could be provided at Sony's Blu-Ray address in California.
