Even forgetting the character-transfer ability for the sequel, it's still a really great game, and highly-recommended. And it's fairly-short, too--so you probably won't have to pour hours and hours into it to finish it and unlock everything that's worth unlocking.

I hesitate to post this, because there are few things worse than an annoying, cutesy blog, and this one is about as annoying and cutesy as it gets. [In that regard, though, it's at least staying consistent with the character(s) in the film.] But since it's revealing new pics and info about the game, what the hell:

I have to say that I haven't played the original, but you guys are making me want to buy both the original and the new one. Everyone here so far has said that these games are real fun and I love Star Wars.

Everybody should try and play the first one, if only for the ability to import all the unlocked characters into the new game--which will then more than double the amount of playable characters:
IGN story that I forgot to put up yesterday
The first game has the seemingly-impossible task of making the prequels into a fun gaming experience, and it succeeds in a big way. The story is relatively short (although it will take a little more time to unlock everything), and it's getting to be pretty cheap now. I think Circuit even had the PS2 and XBox versions on sale for $10 not too long ago.
Definitely recommended, even if you don't care too much for the prequels.
And with this series as successful as it's been, and with no next-gen support, I have to wonder if eventually they'll do an all-new "complete SW saga" version for all the new consoles. . .
players will be able to carry their saves over from the previous installment (on all four supported systems, Xbox, Cube, PS2, and Windows PC) to automatically unlock any of the unlockable characters from the first go-round. When counted with all the characters already in the sequel by default, there are more than 100 playable characters (54 from Episodes 1 through III and 50 from Episodes IV through VI). Just about every A and B-level character imaginable is in there -- be it Lando, Greedo, the Jawas, Luke and Leia, Chewbacca, and Darth Vader himself. Gamorrean Guards are even playable and the team is even considering throwing Hammerhead in there as well.

Is the original on the BC list for the 360? If so I may have to pick it up again cheap.

It would be funny to have the cantina level where you are Han and if you fail to shoot first you have to restart the level.

IGN is reporting that Lego Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy is going to be on the XBox 360 too. I thought it was just going to be with last generations consoles. That's good news, although since it was probablly done with xbox or ps2 type graphics, it won't be a true next gen game.

1up.com is reporting it, too.
Sounds cool, but I'm guessing that would mean that you couldn't import your characters from the first one, though. Neat feature, but not the be-all, end-all.

If they're putting it on the 360, they should just put the original Lego Star Wars on it as well, and have it be all-in-one. Still, I think I'll go with the PS2 version, because then I can immigrate my characters and I'll be able to play both on the PS3 and get graphical upgrades through that. Obviously it won't be as good as having it be HD-native, but then again, how good can you make those Legos look, anyway?

I'm not familiar with the whole character process in lego star wars. Are the characters custom based on how you built them, or are we just talking about importing guys like Mace or Qui Gon to the original trilogy. If it's the later, they should allow a character pack via marketplace.

Well the simplest solution would be to make the first game BC for the 360. Problem solved. Maybe that laundry list of BC games at E3 will be a reality.

You're right. I sold my copy so I'd have to play through again. It could probably be done in about 5 hours.
