Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy

Didn't see a thread about this yet, so I thought I'd go ahead and start one up. The original was one of the most-fun games I played last year, and it sounds like this one will be even better:

Of note:
  • Due on PS2, Xbox, GameCube, GBA, PSP, PC and DS this fall. (no 360/PS3/Revolution so far)
  • More than 50 playable Original Trilogy characters
  • Can import all the unlocked characters from the first game (!)
  • New customizable character feature
  • No online
  • Two-player co-op on everything but the DS, which will have four-player co-op
  • Vehicles no longer on rails
  • Any non-droid character will be able to ride/pilot any creature/vehicle
  • All characters will have melee attacks (i.e. Chewbacca pulling the arms off characters--how cool is that?)
  • Every character, not just Jedi/Sith, can now build things out of Legos
  • Unlockable mini-kits are now playable in special bonus levels

Hell YES. :D2:

I'm drooling...

PixyJunket 02-10-06 10:21 AM

All I ask for are making the vehicle levels not suck.. that was the glaring flaw of the original.

That is a damn shame. The original was one of the most fun games last generation and I was looking forward to this. Maybe this will be one of those rare titles that actually has backward capability for the 360.

From the article, it sounds like the vehicle levels will be quite a bit better this time:

[V]ehicle-based levels have been completely reworked for LEGO Star Wars II. In vehicle-based stages, the vehicles themselves are no longer on "rails" and players can roam freely throughout the level as they would any other level of the game. It was important to the team to really overhaul vehicle usage from LEGO Star Wars to LEGO Star Wars II and give the player the same sense of freedom and exploration that they had in non-vehicle levels in the first game.

Secondly, vehicle levels also now support true free play, so the player will have the ability to go back and re-create all of the great action from the Original Trilogy movies with whatever vehicle they choose to use. If you want to do the trench run in the Millennium Falcon, or even on a landspeeder, you now can. This is a really tremendous addition to the game and adds loads of replay value to the vehicle levels.

The third exciting addition - and even the fourth -- is that vehicles and creatures will appear throughout the game that the player can enter/exit or mount/dismount at will and use however they want. The line between what a vehicle and non-vehicle level is has been blurred. In levels that might traditionally have been non-vehicle, the player will now have the opportunity to enable and use vehicles and creatures to further their progress or to just to explore and have fun.

Any non-droid character will be able to ride any creature and pilot any vehicle, so the player will have the chance to, say, have Lando Calrissian ride a tauntaun or Leia pilot an AT-ST.

The Death Star Attack level is a good example of a vehicle-only map and how different they are from the first game. In the level, the camera is positioned at a high angle, giving the player a wide view of the area. Starting off flying your X-wing over the surface of the Death Star, players can explore various pathways that lead to different areas, with the ultimate goal of progressing toward the end of the level. If there's an area within the level that you want to go back and explore, you can now do so! That simply was not possible in the original LEGO Star Wars.

Like in the non-vehicle levels, some areas will only be accessible with certain vehicles. As the player collects more vehicles, they can return to any level in the new vehicle Free Play mode and switch vehicles on the fly, just like switching characters.

That's great, the vehicle levels were HELL in co-op mode in the original.

Maxflier 02-10-06 10:49 AM

Looking forward to it, thanks for the info!

This is probably the point where I go and pick up the first LEGO Star Wars.

Fok 02-10-06 06:12 PM

looking pretty good

SpaceBoy 02-11-06 11:57 AM

Cool. Love the first one. One of the few good games for my mac. haha

My son got the first game last year and can't wait for this one. I have to admit I think the first game was really nice.

Do it. It is easy and short but extremely fun. It can be had at gamefly & half.com for around $15.

I bought LEGO Star Wars about 2 weeks ago and just finished it this past week. Very fun game.

I am looking forward to the new one.

Supermallet 02-12-06 12:29 AM

Picked mine up today. About to go try it out.

Ravenous 02-12-06 04:08 AM

Got mine with CCs buy 2 get one free. So it was about $13. Not bad

Supermallet 02-12-06 09:44 PM

Tried out the first one last night. Such a great game. I wish more games were that creative and fun, and not just other Star Wars games. Any game for any system. I can't wait for the second.

mndtrp 02-13-06 12:22 AM

Excellent. I enjoyed the first game quite a bit. I'll definately pick this one up.

Love the first one and will look forward to this one too.

Is the original backward compatable with the 360? Man the 360 needs a Star Wars game bad! Make that a GOOD Star Wars game, this or Battlefront or KotOR.

Glad you like it. Unfortunately it is short and replay value is low. Once you unlock everything (again, pretty easy to do), you are left wanting more.

Maybe they will have a compilation for the 360. A whole saga edition with updated graphics & features.

If you have kids, Lego Star Wars is THE game...I'll play with my kid for hours...and can just drop in or out at will. Great time.

Will get this one too...probably next X-mas...maybe for his birthday in April.

outer-edge 02-13-06 07:41 PM

I've been meaning to pick up the first for some time (my geekiness knows no bounds and I collect the actual Star Wars LEGO sets).

However, I initially wanted the GameCube version, but it is still $30 and I can get Xbox at Target for $15. What versions does everyone have, and which do you prefer?

I've got the XBOX version, haven't played any of the others so I don't know how it compares to them but I imagine they are all pretty much the same.
