I also discovered a little glitch (spoilered in case you want to resist the temptation to get tons of gold with very little effort):
Unfortunately, I ran into a really awful glitch today. It's part of the Mages Guild recommendation quest line - the part where you have to get the Cheydinhal recommendation. It involves going into a well to find a person who has an item you need to retrieve. I first attempted it a while back, but didn't have the proper spells to stay underwater long enough to get the item, so I left that quest alone and did other stuff. Now that I have the needed skill, I went back to do the quest, but the guy wasn't in the well anymore. I was very confused, but a Google search revealed that it's a bug that lots of people have encountered. Apparently, after the first time you go in the well, you have 3 days (in game) before the guy in the well disappears forever. This means that I can't get the Cheydinhal recommendation, so I can't advance in the Mages Guild. Bethesda is supposedly working on patches for both the PC and 360 versions, although they haven't announced exactly what the patch will fix. I really hope they fix this glitch - it's a real pisser not being able to progress in the Mages Guild. I figure I have enough other stuff to do between the main quest and the other guilds in the meantime, but this bug is quite a pain. Just a heads up for players who haven't done this part yet - wait until your Alteration skill is 25 or higher before you do the Cheydinhal Recommendation quest.

How many Mage Guild recommendations do you have to get? I think I have four so far.
Also, where the heck is the book you need to find for the Cloud Top quest? When I look at the map it appears I'm standing right on top of it.

I just cleared my first random Oblivion gate last night. I'm at level 18 now so I'm running into these Spider Deadra that resist paralysis, which sucks.
I didn't realize that you apparently get a sigil stone everytime you close one of these gates. I guess I didn't make the connection when I did the first one for the Main Quest. I just added 25pts of fire damage to my ebony sword. That made staying up to after 2am worth it!

For those of you playing the PC version there's a mod out that you must get:
http://btmod.beider.org/
It changes the sizes of menus, the inventory pictures and the font, allowing you to see a lot more of your inventory at once. I think at 1600x1200 I've got around 20 items showing.
It also resizes the maps so that they takes up the entire top half of the screen allowing you to actually see where you are, and where you want to go. Other nifty features include a seconds countdown for spell effects so you don't have to guess from the barrs.
If you're on a PC, now there's no more excuse to play a game designed for a console. This is the definitive version IMO.

So I just completed the Thieves Guild quests and am now head of the Thieves Guild. I finished it last night and only played with the final reward for a minute or so... what's it good for? It just seems to get me arrested.

The drawback is that it always has ab ounty attached to it. So any guard who sees you wearing it will chase and arrest you. Paying off the bounty does nothing since it will be back on the next time you wear it. So before fast traveling to any city make sure to take it off. Which is tough when loaded down with loot and you need the feather effect.
Owning a house in the thief district in the Imperial City is handy because there are fewer guards and they are easy to avoid. So if needed you can fast travel there, leap in the water wearing the mask, circle to your house, unload your loot in a chest, take off mask and then go fence it in parts.

If you take it off and then look at your bounty, it will say 0. So, steal or commit crimes while wearing it. Sure, guards will chase you. but they won't know its you.

thanks for the info on the cowl, Vryce & xmiyux. I guess I didn't do it properly because when I did take my mask off I still had a bounty on me, even though I committed no crimes with the mask off.

Well I 'beat' the game yesterday after about 60 hours of gameplay, by beat I mean got all the achievements.
I think it is time to let oblivion rest, but before I do is there any 'must see/do' side quests I should go after? I've done the In The painting and the In the Dream sidequests, along with a few others.
Overall it was an excellent game, but to be honest towards the end I was getting pretty tired of the same cave/temple/oblivion gates. The game could definitely use a little more variety. Also was dissappointed that the main quest was so weak. I saved it for last assuming it would be great, but in fact it kind of sucked.
Word of advice to new players: Save the Dark Brotherhood for last, eveything after them is a dissappointment.
