I also discovered a little glitch (spoilered in case you want to resist the temptation to get tons of gold with very little effort):

Spoiler:
When you complete the quest, the count offers you your reward - 1,000 gold. But the "Reward" topic is still there if you talk to him again, and if you select it again, he gives you another 1,000 gold. I guess he has really bad short term memory. Once I discovered this glitch, I went back to my previous save and then created another save just before talking to the count. Then I exploited the glitch and ended up with about 100,000 gold. This way I can roll back to the save game if I start feeling guilty about my ill-gotten riches, but I just don't see that happening. The lack of gold wasn't really a problem for me anyway, but it's nice to be able to buy a house (or five).

Unfortunately, I ran into a really awful glitch today. It's part of the Mages Guild recommendation quest line - the part where you have to get the Cheydinhal recommendation. It involves going into a well to find a person who has an item you need to retrieve. I first attempted it a while back, but didn't have the proper spells to stay underwater long enough to get the item, so I left that quest alone and did other stuff. Now that I have the needed skill, I went back to do the quest, but the guy wasn't in the well anymore. I was very confused, but a Google search revealed that it's a bug that lots of people have encountered. Apparently, after the first time you go in the well, you have 3 days (in game) before the guy in the well disappears forever. This means that I can't get the Cheydinhal recommendation, so I can't advance in the Mages Guild. Bethesda is supposedly working on patches for both the PC and 360 versions, although they haven't announced exactly what the patch will fix. I really hope they fix this glitch - it's a real pisser not being able to progress in the Mages Guild. I figure I have enough other stuff to do between the main quest and the other guilds in the meantime, but this bug is quite a pain. Just a heads up for players who haven't done this part yet - wait until your Alteration skill is 25 or higher before you do the Cheydinhal Recommendation quest.
Spoiler:

1,000? Wow... my reward for the Vampire cure quest was 5,000.
I did a quest earlier for him as part of the Mage's guild quests. And had his disposition to 100. Maybe the reward number is random. I saw a post of someone on the xbox forum that had a reward of 2,000

I ran into that, but fortunately I had one of those "Sea" potions on me, so I just used that to breathe underwater, and finished it no problem

My understanding is certain rewards are leveled as well, so the higher level players will be rewarded with more gold than someone who completed the same quest at a lower level

Ahh. That makes sense then. I think I was in my 20s when I completed the quest. Maybe level 21 or 22.

I already had the potion too, but for those who don't, there's also a bottle available in the basement of the Mage's Guild.

How many Mage Guild recommendations do you have to get? I think I have four so far.

Also, where the heck is the book you need to find for the Cloud Top quest? When I look at the map it appears I'm standing right on top of it.

It's supposed to be on top of something. Maybe you accidentally kicked it to the side somewhere? Try reloading to just before you got there and look again maybe.

I just cleared my first random Oblivion gate last night. I'm at level 18 now so I'm running into these Spider Deadra that resist paralysis, which sucks.

I didn't realize that you apparently get a sigil stone everytime you close one of these gates. I guess I didn't make the connection when I did the first one for the Main Quest. I just added 25pts of fire damage to my ebony sword. That made staying up to after 2am worth it!

I believe there is a charred body on the ground - search the body

For those of you playing the PC version there's a mod out that you must get:
http://btmod.beider.org/

It changes the sizes of menus, the inventory pictures and the font, allowing you to see a lot more of your inventory at once. I think at 1600x1200 I've got around 20 items showing.

It also resizes the maps so that they takes up the entire top half of the screen allowing you to actually see where you are, and where you want to go. Other nifty features include a seconds countdown for spell effects so you don't have to guess from the barrs.

If you're on a PC, now there's no more excuse to play a game designed for a console. This is the definitive version IMO.

So I just completed the Thieves Guild quests and am now head of the Thieves Guild. I finished it last night and only played with the final reward for a minute or so... what's it good for? It just seems to get me arrested.

It is the coolest item ever. Any crime you commit while wearing it has the bounty attached to the item not you. So if you are robbing a store wearing it, they see you and call for the guards, if you take it off before the guard confronts you when he does confront you he will talk to you normally and tell you to move along because the crime and its bounty is on the item not you. Now if you resist arrest and then take it off they will still attack you until you get out of sight and the music goes back to normal.

The drawback is that it always has ab ounty attached to it. So any guard who sees you wearing it will chase and arrest you. Paying off the bounty does nothing since it will be back on the next time you wear it. So before fast traveling to any city make sure to take it off. Which is tough when loaded down with loot and you need the feather effect.

Owning a house in the thief district in the Imperial City is handy because there are fewer guards and they are easy to avoid. So if needed you can fast travel there, leap in the water wearing the mask, circle to your house, unload your loot in a chest, take off mask and then go fence it in parts.

Any crimes you commit while wearing the mask are attributed to it.
If you take it off and then look at your bounty, it will say 0. So, steal or commit crimes while wearing it. Sure, guards will chase you. but they won't know its you.

If you watched the scene where you received the item the guy makes this part pretty clear. (to the person who asked, not you Canis. I know you knew this)

I have a PC able to run the game, but my wife and I chose the 360 version. If I am going to play a hundred hours in this game, I want it to be from the comfort of my couch. It is just a personal preference of where to play for me.

There are vampires in the ruins called crowhaven, just NW of Anvil. There are also vampires under the Imperial city in the sewers, under the market district, which you run into while doing the thieves quest. Allow yourself to be attacked by them until you contract hemophilia and don't cure yourself for 3 days.

I play Oblivion on my HTPC, 50" HDTV. But then again, I don't have a 360 so I don't have a choice

thanks for the info on the cowl, Vryce & xmiyux. I guess I didn't do it properly because when I did take my mask off I still had a bounty on me, even though I committed no crimes with the mask off.

Well I 'beat' the game yesterday after about 60 hours of gameplay, by beat I mean got all the achievements.

I think it is time to let oblivion rest, but before I do is there any 'must see/do' side quests I should go after? I've done the In The painting and the In the Dream sidequests, along with a few others.

Overall it was an excellent game, but to be honest towards the end I was getting pretty tired of the same cave/temple/oblivion gates. The game could definitely use a little more variety. Also was dissappointed that the main quest was so weak. I saved it for last assuming it would be great, but in fact it kind of sucked.

Word of advice to new players: Save the Dark Brotherhood for last, eveything after them is a dissappointment.
