Lost faith in rumors. Of of the most solid bits of info came directly from MS and that was a lie. So essentially there is nothing left to believe in until you see it on a shelf.

As I've said before, I'm #88 in line at my local EBgames. How rediculous that I need to most likely end up going to this thing on the 18th at Best Buy... that's why I made a pre-order for first shipment... so I wouldn't have to go through this. But whatever. I'm not camping. I'll show up two hours before they open. If the line is too long, then I'll go grab breakfast, and come back when they open. If they have any left, great, if not, boo hoo.

Called and cancelled with CompUSA. I asked "What's the dealie-o?" and they said "We let some preorders happen but were not able to get theXboxes so we cancelled them."
That's why it had a 3-6 day on the checkout screen for some.

Calling every store every day does not help you get one. If you did not order one in May, don't be mad at stores or Microsoft because you do not have one. Stopping in to a store and looking every day, however, is fine, because at least you put the effort into the looking. I just wish everyone would realize that they most likely will not get a system until Feb/March unless they are in the right place at the right time. As I stated before, the larger stores will not get as many shipments as EB/Gamestop due do our marketshare and pre-orders. Best Buy may be a fairly close second though. I'm not trying to threadcrap, but I'm on the otherside of this whole deal from you guys and thought I'd share some insight. The moral of the story is 'stop bugging people about a question that they honestly do not know the answer to, then getting pissed off at them'

But I think that you'd agree that until Feb/Mar you'll have to be in the right place at the right time in order to get a 360. And that Microsoft either outright lied or dramatically twisted their "shipments every week" claim.

I still think MS is crazy if they don't make it at least semi-reasonable to get by Xmas, or at the latest by early January (when people are spending their Xmas money). The longer it is hard to get, the closer we get to concrete specs, info, and release date of the competition...

The key to making the low supply/high demand work is balance. MS needs to release enough hardware to keep the hope alive in people who want one so they keep looking and the buzz continues, while not oversaturating the market so the product is 'common'. Like the Every 10 Minutes thing. During the entire promo I saw caps maybe twice, and they were all the 1.29 at-the-counter 20 oz bottles. My chances of winning with just a few caps were less than negligible, so i didn't really bother. Had I seen 12 pack cans with the codes, I would have been buying them instead of the Lowe's brand drink.
Another possible reason for the contest: budget. Selling 9000 consoles would mean they would lose what, $ 1,134,000? That's a direct hit on the bottom line. But *giving* them away, especially with a tie-in that Pepsi/Dew probably helped subsidize, means that money can be applied to the 'marketing/promotions' budget. And of course if you give someone a console, odds are they are going to buy games or accessories, which is where the profit comes in.
Relaunch--is this anything special, or just a scheduled 'second wave' of consoles?
And yes, while there may not be anything 'illegal' with store employees buying multiple copies of a hot item while on the clock to sell on ebay, it's surely wrong, and if I were a manager, I'd try to put a stop to it.

Even with the rampant cheating, your odds don't change.
And giving away the 9,000 instead of selling them... 9,000 is a drop in the bucket for the demand. How do we know the giveaway isn't a part of the increased demand? It may have worked it is hard to guage.
