Rare's Perfect Gamble

In order to guarantee Xbox 360 launch-day availability of flagship title Perfect Dark Zero, Microsoft sent the game to manufacture before it had passed certification.

It was an extraordinary gamble. The game passed certification after the disks had been pressed. If the company had waited for certification to come through before okaying manufacture, Perfect Dark Zero would not have been available at the launch of Xbox 360.

Having ordered replication of the disks, Microsoft and Rare had to cross their fingers for a positive certification. If Microsoft's notoriously strict procedure - which we understand was not eased for PDZ in any way - had failed, the disks would have been trashed and the game would have been late.

The certification process is the final stage a game goes through before manufacture. Microsoft's team picks through the game making sure there are no bugs, that menus all work correctly, and that there are no compatibility issues. Games that fail, even in the smallest detail, are sent back to publishers and developers for changes. The process can take days, or even weeks.

Microsoft's developer Rare has been under enormous pressure to deliver two games for the launch of Xbox 360 - Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero, with PDZ the flagship title for the entire launch. Failure to make retail on November 22 would have been a sales and publicity disaster.

Taking a risk

PDZ executive producer Jim Veevaert told Next Generation, "Typically we go through a certification process to get a game finished and then we release to manufacturing. We took some risks and manufactured the disks over five days before certification."

When asked about the risks involved he said, "If the certification had not passed, we would have had hundreds of thousands of disks on our hands. It was us taking a risk to get the game there day one and there for launch."

He said, "Typically you can take upwards of 12 to 14 days to go through certification. In this case we didn't have the time, so we said 'go for it'."

He said the team was confident, if not certain, that the certification would pass. "The team had been going through the game over the last few weeks to get us to a point where we felt really comfortable. Rare does a lot of work in terms of polishing the game so we felt pretty confident it was time to let it go."

Microsoft has manufactured 700,000 copies of Perfect Dark Zero for the U.S. market, with a target hardware tie-ratio of 1:1. Veevaert said that figure was based on the early launch period of the hardware, and that a further run is expected in the days ahead.

1:1? That seems quite high doesn't it? Even for the first stages of the launch. I'm sure not even Halo got a 1:1 ratio of systems to games. Now I'm really worried. I don't know, I would much rather give them a couple more weeks to polish it up and have it in time for the holiday season then shove it out the door. True they would have recieved flak about it but at least they would have had the time they wanted to do some last minute tweaks.

It sounds to me like they spent plenty of time polishing the game, all they were waiting for is microsoft certification. The way I read the the article basically they took all the time they possibly could to make sure the game was the way they wanted it to be before they let it out of thier hands.

I can't wait to play this game

Microsoft's certification process for everything they make is harsh to say the least. When you're on top though you're going to catch shit from everyone for every little thing the company does i.e. sending to press without passing the final cert. I'm sure this game works a 100% and is bad ass as well. I'm waiting for the dress up joanna dark penthouse expansion pack.

That could very well end up being the case, but when people are posting their reviews on the game, remind me not to put any stock in yours, since you've already decided before actually playing the game.

i've been an ms oem partner for the last five years and have gotten chances to beta everything from 2003 server to streets & trips to fable. and i'll stick by it, it'll function like it should, but im sure two weeks later after the cheaters get ahold of it everything will turn to crap.

and i'll remind you but you remind me to remind you first cause i know i'll forget mmm K

I LOVED Goldeneye--bought an N64 and Goldeneye shortly after playing it, the game sold me on the console. When Perfect Dark came out I HAD to have it even though it severely hurt my budget at the time lol. Im not as much a Perfect Dark fan as I am a fan of the Gameplay RARE provided in both those games.

As far as cheating goes--I remember wanting cheats for PD sooo bad (like Goldeneye had) but finding out that there simply wasnt any. Maybe that will be the case with this one?

I'm sure there will be plenty of exploits/glitches in this game that people will find over time. Hopefully though the game will hold it's own and the cheaters will have to play fairly.......oh wait they can't do that; I guess they'll just have to sell thier copy

I'm going to spectulate that this game will be amazing, but I'm not going to give that my seal of approval till I've been playing for a couple weeks.

That is pretty cool to get to beta test many of those products. What little beta testing i have done was always somewhat fun even if a bit tedious at times.

Hopefully there isn't a major visible ranking like in Halo that just seems to encourage cheaters. Then again i kind of also dig the e-penis you get from having a decent ranking.

That is exactly how I feel. Not the biggest fan of PD, but the groundwork they laid for console FPSs with Goldeneye.

as far as the cheating goes i wanna know who has the time to sit around and find all the weak points. i mean if its your job white hat hacking okay, but doing it in your spare time thats just hardcore its so hardcore it makes jenna haze seem like little red riding hood.

I was kind of worried about the game not passing certification but in this day and age they can rely more on LIVE and the HDD to fix any errors. I just hate to see then start shit like this on the first run of games.

I guess I'm equal parts angry and disappointed I guess. They have a lot riding on this game and system but they are already skimping a bit right out of the gate.

November 17, 2005 - If you've been following the crazy, out-of-control pre-launch week of the Xbox 360, things really haven't even started yet. Believe me. This is JUST the beginning. But one of the strangest things that's happened so far is that Rare's first-person shooter, Perfect Dark Zero is nowhere to be found.

In a strange, seemingly conspiratorial move that's actually not been deliberate on Microsoft's part, the Xbox 360 game that's received the most scrutiny and the most hype thus far, Perfect Dark Zero, has not shown its pretty little head. Just like at Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference, it's just gone and hid itself.

Microsoft has been too quiet about its whereabouts. But the company assured us today on the phone that the game was given a long development cycle -- much like it did with Halo 1. Microsoft told us the game been completed, gold disc pressed, it's gone to manufacturing, and should arrive in the mail tomorrow, Friday, November 18. There are only two plants that can manufacture Xbox 360 discs, both are in China, and so transporting the games from that end of the world to this end has taken time. Perhaps too much time for this bunch of impatient gamers. Kameo: Elements of Power was finished first, and Project Gotham Racing 3 followed. Perfect Dark Zero was the last of the first-party Microsoft Game Studios titles to be completed, and its time has finally come.

Just like everyone else, we purchased our own copy PDZ at retail stores this week (or rather, we pre-ordered it), and just like MS tells us, the retailers have told us to come back tomorrow (Friday) when the title is supposed to appear. If it does in fact appear, we'll deliver a whopping monster attack of impressions and media unlike anything you have ever seen, my friends. Single-player, co-op, multiplayer, sound, graphics and gameplay descriptions, you name it. We'll have it. But if it doesn't come in tomorrow? Well, just like us, you'll have to wait another day. We'll let you know either way.

Actually even if i was that hot for one at launch and could find one i wouldn't have the cash for it yet anyway. No worries fellow Halo companions - i will pick one up late january early february along with PDZ and will join you all for online mayhem. I'll run for the rockets in that game as well
