I'll buy whichever system RE5 comes out for first. In case of simultaneous release I'll go with whichever version looks better. That's my next-gen gaming system dilemma solved!

Yes it does. At least according to the 3d model on www.xbox360.com

Just click on the console and from there you can rotate the Xbox to see what it has and doesn't have.

The Microsoft-Toshiba HD-DVD Alliance Changes Xbox 360

It didn’t take long for the first effects of the partnership between Microsoft and Toshiba announced yesterday to appear.

According to the statements made by Bill Gates in Japan, Xbox 360, the new gaming console will include HD-DVD drives.

Considering that such a decision would postpone the launching date, Microsoft will equip the initial models with classic DVD drives, and only after the new HD-DVD are ready, the Xbox will incorporate them.

Xbox 360 going into the HD-DVD side is an important advantage for Toshiba and in the same time a response to Sony’s announcement that the new Play Station 3 will incorporate the Blu-Ray standard.

Up until now, the Play Station sales exceed Xbox’s, but the fact that Microsoft will be launched before PlayStation 3 makes some analysts say this situation will change.

Gates also said that the Microsoft-Toshiba alliance is not a unilateral partnership and that many of the equipments manufactured by the Japanese company, such as the Tablet PCs will be based on Longhorn, Microsoft’s future operating system.

Maybe somebody already posted this, but this statement makes me want to wait till the DVD drive is HD-DVD.

Hopefully they'd do some kind of free swap-out of the drives or something, kind of like Nintendo does with the new version of the Gamecube that doesn't have component output. News like this just encourages people to wait on buying a 360. (I feel deja vu for some reason)

post #160, after news that the 360 might later include an HD-DVD drive.

Don't care, unless it means more megs for my games which it won't since there will be legacy 360s out there with only the ordinary dvd drive. So completely pointless. The blue-ray format is better anyway, if you're going to provide a new drive somewhere down the line (presumably only for the purpose of movie playback) then why not go with the one that will actually win the format war.

Btw, I hope Toshiba will be bleeding $$$ by putting their crappy next gen drives in 360, I can't imagine MS would have agreed to it otherwise.

At first the HD-DVD news had me freaked out and very unhappy but I have to agree with you. I could care less about DVD playback on my 360 so I'm still ready for the system. Gaming companies won't be supporting something that not all 360 owners have. It'll be like PS2 support for the hard drive which seriously lacked and was part of the reason I kicked my PS2 to the curb some time ago.

I might even change my mind down the road and cough up the $$ AGAIN for the new 360 but that is only if the new version has some additional amazing added stuff.

I'm not sure why this was even brought up again. The article is from June, and this was already discussed many times before. Bill said that they "may" put a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray drive in a future version of the Xbox 360. Nothing has been finalized on that decision. No games would use the new disc format, it would be purely for playback of movies.

I'd say it's been brought up again because we are running out of things to talk about while we all sit around and wait for a press release and more official info. I know that's my excuse.

This control, much more small and manageable that the one of the XBOX will allow to ignite and to extinguish the console with no need to raise to us of the armchair.

End Fantasy XI

Excellent! So with the push of a button we can ignite our Xbox, and then extinguish the flames?! Microsoft is genious! And all of this without the need to raise to us the armchair.

Not much of a surprise here, but from slashdot's main page:
"Wal-Mart employees have leaked the price of Microsoft's next-generation console. The Xbox 360 is set to be launched for $299.99. Additionally, games are set to be $59.99 each. Ouch. Looks like the next generation of consoles is going to burn holes in gamers' wallets even moreso than the current generation. One thing is for sure: It's time to start gearing up for an expensive Christmas."

Apparently it's just me, but the picture isn't showing up. I waited an hour or so to make sure it wasn't a temporary thing...

Yeah, I was, but to my knowledge there's no type of access restriction on the university network. Nevertheless, I see the image now. Sorry to distract from the topic at hand.
