This is great! I messed around with MAME years ago and found it to be a pain in the butt because you needed an engineering degree to play them. Even a couple of years ago I tried this and all the sites were loaded with redirects to porn. Anyway, I have been messing around with some of these classics and sharing them with my kids. What fun! I am not yet ready to get into the challenge but may I suggest one game for the future: Burgertime.

MAME32 is a piece of cake. I prefer to use MAME Plus because they kept Pong in after the official project decided to remove it. Not that I ever play them, but it's nice to have Pong, plus there are a few other minor bonus features to it.
If anyone has trouble getting MAME running, just post here. I'm sure everyone here is willing to help as long as you promise you're not some former record holder
I think I'm going to be out of the running for Popeye unless I figure out some kind of tricks. I have enough trouble getting through the first level without dying twice
At least Journey and Scramble don't seem to be very popular

And this is only my 3rd time playing this game, ever!

So are you guys using your keyboard to play these games? I wonder if my setup gives me an advantage?

I knew I shouldn't have told everyone it had two buttons
What do you have for a monitor in that thing anyway? Looks good.
*note to self* ban all games that use spinners or trackballs

I was mostly joking about that. It's preferrable if we can use the keyboard, but I think it's ok as long as the other two games for the week don't have any oddball controls. Tempest is fairly playable with a mouse.
In some cases it could be better to choose a console port of any arcade game with weird controls, like say Heavy Barrel which you had to twist the joystick. If someone wanted to play that we could switch to the NES version. Space Harrier would've worked better last week if we went with the Sega Master System version.

Stop it! I'm getting sick of this game

I actually got past the final level and it just starts over. Of course after I got through it all the first time I completely choked and died fast. If anyone gets really good at this game this score will be demolished because nothing changes when it starts over.

I'm in as soon as I have some spare time. I haven't even played most of the games mentioned, so it should be fun. I used to be the Popeye master, but I haven't played it since I was a kid.
I haven't used Mame in a really long time. I know it and all the roms are still on my computer, though. I'll have to try beating some high scores tomorrow night.
Edited, so it actually makes some sense.

I know I won't be catching that Popeye score. I can barely get past the first level. Bluto has to be one of the smartest and fastest video game baddies of the 80s. He's too damn fast! And then Olive Oyle kicks your ass if you let one of her kisses sink into the drink
Wimpy is your only friend
I went and looked up Popeye at marp.retrogames.com and the record score there is only about 150,000. Shows just how hard that game is. The high scores for Scramble were near a half million and that game doesn't even display 6 digits, it rolls over to 00000.

Nah, don't bother. The game sucks and is way to hard. Next week should have some better games, I'd recommend waiting until then.

Yes, I picked Journey because it's one of the most absurd games ever made. I'm getting a little sick of the title song though. When the lights go down in the cihhh-tay, and the sun shines on the baahhaaay. Ooh I wanna be they-ay-ee-air in my cihhtay. Oh-woo-oh Ohhhhh-ooh-oh Owoo-oh" I've got stranger games in mind if I get to pick anymore, just wait!
Anyone else have the history.dat file installed for MAME? There's interesting stuff in there. Here's what it says for Journey
I wish the MAME developers would work a sample of Seperate Ways into it
I can still picture that horrible video they did, dancing around in some alley somewhere

Journey (c) 03/1983 Bally Midway.
- TRIVIA -
This game runs on the Bally Midway MCR 2 hardware.
Used digitized faces of the band members, photographed with a camera designed by Ralph Baer, father of the home video game console. The machine contained a tape loop of the song 'Separate Ways (World's Apart)' in the concert scene at the end of each level. Rushed through the 1982 Christmas holidays by the Marvin Glass team because Bally/Midway wanted the game to coincide with the release of the band's Frontiers album. They took all the images of the band backstage at a Salt Lake City concert. There was talk of using the game as part of the road show, but that fell through.
Originally, this game was not to have the band Journey in it. It would have a digital camera that would take a picture of the player's face and put it on the character. This was dropped after some people used unmentionable parts of their body as character heads during tests.
The background music includes the Journey songs: 'Chain Reaction', 'Don't Stop Believin'', 'Lights', 'Still They Ride', 'Stone In Love' and 'Wheel In The Sky'.
- TIPS AND TRICKS -
* Secret Screen : On Journey's attract screen (the one with the face), press all the buttons (Blast, 1P Start, 2P Start) and the joystick to the Left and you'll get a screen with the programmer's names and tiny digitized pictures.
- STAFF -
Designed and programmed by : Elaine Ditton, Richard Ditton (founders of Incredible Technologies).
Graphics by : Scott Morrison
Sounds : Elaine Ditton, Steve Meyer
Hardware : Cary Mednick, Robert Ploussard, Ashok Charles

, but maybe we could focus more on games that are actually fun? It might get more people to participate...
