But the Xbox isn't that much more powerful than the other two consoles, despite the belief of some Xbox owners on this board that it's some sort of magical uber-machine. Not that I'd buy this game on ANY console.

Thank you. Hell, I lived with Doom on the 32X for many years. And if not on this generation of systems, than the PS3 or Revolution should be more than capable of playing it.

Yea but by the time the next gen systems are out who would care about D3? It would be old news then. We're talking about NOW, not tomorrow.

I think the difference is big enough that neither the PS2 or Gamecube could do it justice. But i agree, i wouldn't touch the game on any console.

Of course, considering how good i think this game is so far, 200 dollars for an Xbox and Doom 3 is worth it for someone who doesn't want to pay 400 dollars to upgrade their PC. Even for someone who keeps taking jabs at avoiding the Xbox.

Looking forward to playing Doom 3 after I get a new gaming rig. So what's the verdict on Doom 3 is it anything special? Is it Doom on steroids?

I'll pretty much pick it up regardless because it brings back great memories. Just wondering if id did anything trendsetting or are behind the times.

Thanks.

Based on what I've read, Doom 3 plays very differently from the previous Doom games. It's not a run and gun shooter with swarming enemies. Apparently it's more dark and moody with more deliberately paced gameplay. That's fine with me as I've gotten a bit tired of the mindless shooters.

On a different note, I just checked with my local EB and they will have the game tomorrow (Monday) for those who have pre-ordered it. Can't wait to pick it up!

It should run very well on your setup at medium detail. Apparently, it's very playable on a 1.5 GHZ Pentium with a GeForce 3 so you should have no problem.

Linux version is coming, but not by Tuesday. More than likely you will have to buy the Windows disc and then download some linux binaries.

That's exactly what its like. So far, there have only been a few instances where there have been 3+ enemies at once. Generally there are only a couple at a time.

As for neiname, you should be fine on High Quality at 1024x768.

That's what people said about Splinter Cell.

Doom 3 is well beyond Splinter Cell in the graphics department, though. I agree that it is not impossible to port Doom 3 to PS2/Gamecube but there would be many sacrifices that would make it a very different experience. For what it's worth, Carmack himself has stated that Xbox is the only current generation console that can reproduce Doom 3 in all it's graphic fidelity. He ought to know best...

It's clear that Carmack is anti-Nintendo. If he was a DVDtalk member we would have him banned!

I think there's a significantly bigger leap here, considering how Doom 3 is pushing current computer hardware.

Thanks. Sounds awesome guys.

How hard is it to kill a monster? Because if there are only a few monsters on screen at once it would be great if you really had to 'work' at killing a monster instead of space bar press bang! dead monster.

I remember reading about the intial idea of Quake. The way they described it it was almost like Virtual Fighter but first person with bladed weapons. You would see the impact of every hit and strike you made.

Can't wait to upgrade the old 'puter and play Doom 3.

My system can't do the dance either, but I will still find a way to play this.

I hope the xbox version will allow multiplayer with pc users so I can finally demonstrate once and for all to my very stubborn xbox-loving friends that a mouse and keyboard combo will kick the ass of a thumbpad console controller anyday of the week.

But I may have to do some upgrading first. Running a P4 1.6a OC'd to 2.1 with 512 MB Rambus and an ATI Radeon 8500 with 128 MB RAM.

Graet games are just as fun to play a year or two down the road (or even longer than that).

I don't care about having the latests and greatest thing. I buy hardly anything at launch now. Seems stupid when I know I'll be able to get it dirt cheap in a year or two and will have just as much fun playing it then (probably more so not having a $50 whole in wallet).

If any of you have played it, could you tell me how you like it so far?
