Nintendo DS E3 Lineup and Discussion

Looks much better. $179.99 is way out of my range though. I have no use for portable gaming. I bought a GBA simply because I wanted to play new 2D games and the GB player wasn't available yet. I've hardly touched it since getting a GB player.
I don't use public transportation and rarely fly so I have no need to kill time outside the house on a regular basis and just can't see the point of squinting at a tiny screen while at home and I could be playing a game on my TV (with the exception of new 2D games which were unique to the GBA at the time I bought it).
The DS will be tempting as I love first party nintendo games, but I'll hold off. It could tank and be dirt cheap in a year or two.

The new design looks a ton better than the E3 version.
I won't be picking this up unless it's more around $150 or so though. I don't think the price point is official at this point though, so they may bring it down a bit for the US.

I may pass if its $179, unless there are some great trade in deals. Nice looking system, but I'll stick with the my NES GBA for now.
I'm still a little doubtful about the touch screen. If they do something cool like give it PDA functionality I might change my mind though.

Atlus also has announced 5 DS games and evidently, Square Enix has distributed survey cards in the Final Fantasy 1 & 2 GBA that asks what games people would want to see on the DS. Titles included Final Fantasy(s), Front Mission, a Mana title and Chrono Trigger.
I already plan on trading in at least one SP toward the DS. I'm not sure if the wife would want a DS but I think she will. She tends to play her SP more than her Palm now (Dope Wars). It would be cool if Nintendo incorporated a Palm style application into either the DS itself or Pictochat-wireless functionality n'all.

I'll get the DS if it's $179 (anything over $200 I'd have to debate, less than that and I'm in) and I'll keep my SP as a backup system for the plane rides.

Over 125, and I just can't justify buying it to myself. I haven't bought an SP, and was hoping I could buy this instead, but I guess I will wait and then buy the SP.

Is anyone else concerned about the power button being located right above the control pad? On one hand, it will better prevent inadvertent power-ons and powerdowns when the unit is closed. But it sure seems like it'd be really easy to slip and accidentally turn off your game while you were playing.

Square-Enix is taking a survey (I think in a card that comes with Final Fantasy I+II?) asking what people would like to see on the DS among which are Final Fantasy III, IV, V, VI, Chrono Trigger, and the Romancing Saga series.

Plus, it's speculated that the power button is one of those that you have to hold down for a while in order for the unit to actually shut down. So if you do slip and accidentaly hit the button for some reason, nothing will happen most likely.

Nintendo DS details to emerge at October 7 conference
Rob Fahey 16:06 20/09/2004
Prices, dates and games - all will (probably) be revealed
The launch date, price and software line-up for the Nintendo DS in Japan look set to be confirmed early next month, with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata set to take the stage at a press conference in Tokyo on October 7th.
The company chose to eschew a presence at the Tokyo Game Show once again this year, leaving third party developers to fly the flag for its forthcoming handheld at the event next weekend, but had been expected to announce details of the DS around the time of the show.
Instead, it will now hold a major press conference in early October, where full Japanese details of the console's launch are expected to be announced. The company has however started advertising the DS on Japanese TV - with a new advertisement featuring popular Japanese singer Hikaru Utada promoting the virtues of the system's touch screen.
Iwata will be joined on stage at the press conference by Nintendo's game design legend Shigeru Miyamoto, who is expected to demonstrate some of the first-party titles which the firm has been creating for the new hardware.
The Nintendo DS is expected to launch in North America within days of the Japanese launch, but the price point of the console remains under wraps for now. Most retailers are taking pre-orders at around $199, but it's widely expected that the console will launch at a lower price than that - with $179 and $149 both being touted as likely prices by different sources over the past few months.

Looks like it will launch at $150, cheaper than I expected. Not sure if I will pick this up as I really don't see myself getting much use out of a handheld system.

More good news, besides a Nov. 21st launch and Pictochat being built in, Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt will be included out of the box (Tetris of old) according to USA Today. Bonus!

I wouldn't get too excited yet. Going back and looking at the E3 coverage, the actual Metroid DS game was called Metroid Prime: Hunters. "Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt" sounds like a demo to me (probably a multiplayer demo of sorts).
