Nintendo DS E3 Lineup and Discussion

Ben, Who knows. It is a brand new system (1 third system as they say). I very much doubt it will work just because I don't think it will fit on the unit.

I hope the e-reader would work somehow. I'll connect a cable to another GBA if I have to for Animal Crossing DS. I'd also like to be able to use my existing town but I doubt it.

The worst part of it coming out in November is I'll likely have to buy them for the kids as well for Christmas. At $200/per it's going to be pricy to by 3 or 4 of these. Hopefully $149 will be the street price, fingers crossed.

I thought I read the DS will have two cart slots, one for the new and one for the GBA carts. I would assume the ereader will work since it works with the GBASP and wasn't designed for it (though I suspect the SP was in the pipeline and they took it into account). I'm wondering though if it will also play GB and GBC games like the GBA, or just GBA. I'm not sure because I can't remember how they made the GBA back-compatible. Did they put the software on one of the "auxillary" chips, or did they throw in a separate GBC processor?
Anyways, I'm probably one of the few folks that are excited to see a new side scrolling Mario game. I just can't get into the 3D ones (except Luigi's Mansion, oddly enough)

Just a heads up... I got a release date of November 29th from Nintendo today (As my company will be carrying these). May be fake, but its something...

Has anybody heard about the DS not playing GB and GBC games? Only GBA as far as backwards compatibility? This system just took a major hit in my book, one of the biggest reasons I got an SP was to be able to play some of the older games without a goofy light attachment. The newer 32 bit games are nifty of course, but I have several reasons for my gaming.

I haven't quite figured out the concern with backwards compatability. It's not that big of a deal to keep the SP around, I can't imagine it will be worth that much on eBay anyway, who knows though. That being said, there are some great GB games, nothing in the GBC era really caught on with me though.

I'd like it to be able to play everything just because that's what I want in a game system. Hell, I still think if the Dreamcast could have played all the previous CD based Sega software, it would have done better.
I'd probably get one anyways, but I'd really like for all my GB (original, color and Advance) games to work on it. That's just me I guess.

One great GBC game that I always wished Konami would make a sequel for on the GBA was Survival Kids. That was a really fun, innovative little RPG. Same with Legend of the River King from Natsume (a GBA sequel is mentioned on Natsume's site, but I think it got cancelled). Both games could use the touch screen in really cool ways. Maybe they'll have a future on the DS.

I don't have the SP, so backwards compatibility would be a bonus for me as it would greatly increase the number of available titles. Plus, for travel purposes it means one less system to lug around to enjoy the full library of games.

Some new titles are getting announced. Castlevania, Silent Hill, and a new Contra game will be making an appearance on the DS according to gcadvanced.com. A few Square titles were mentioned but no titles given.

Japanese retailers are now saying Nov. 4 for Japan and Nov. 11 for us according to gcadvanced.com. They also say $179.99 (minus my SP trade-in @ $50) and 5 or 6 launch titles with 11 to be out by years end. Hope it's true.

At $179.99 they can't knock me off the waiting list. There's some great games for the DS (and the PSP) that I'd be interested in, but I can't imagine paying over $100 for either. I really want to play that Pac-Pix game too. Unless they kill the GBA (and they won't), I'm going to have to wait.

Nintendo DS will remain Nintendo DS (no silly GBDS/Nitro) but the new design is sweeeeet. IGN has the article. Stereo surround, bigger buttons and it looks good. I just hope it comes out this year.

For the lazy:
The retooled Nintendo DS features a thinner, black base and an angular platinum flip-top cover. The face buttons and shoulder buttons are larger, and some have been reconfigured for optimum use. The unit includes a new storage slot for the touch screen's stylus, and the speakers now broadcast in stereo sound, with or without headphones.
Software companies worldwide have more than 120 Nintendo DS games in development. Nintendo alone is developing more than 20 titles, and in excess of 100 companies have signed on to create games for the new system. The company is expected to announce the launch date, price, and game line-up in the near future.
"The Nintendo DS will change the future of hand-held gaming," says Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. "Dual screens, chat functions, a touch screen, wireless capabilities, voice recognition - these abilities surpass anything attempted before, and consumers will benefit from the creativity and innovation the new features bring to the world of video games."
