I wasn't counting peripherals. ;)
Otherwise you'd have to through the power glove in their too. :D |
Power Glove was made by Mattel, if I remember correctly, so you couldn't count that anyways. :)

Even if they make good use of both screens it will not be worth the cost to have another screen there. This is as bad as the whole Crystal Chronicles thing. God forbid you had to press start or something to pick your weapons so instead you need 4 GBAs and 4 Link cables to play multi! Im so glad they provide these $$OPTIONS$$ instead of me being incovenienced for a half a second

A mockup, but looks pretty cool. :( no Dual screen. |
Ohhh!
That mock-up looks terrific. This sucks cause if the next GBA is'nt like this I'll be dissapointed. Being able to play my existing GC games on the go blows PSP out of the water IMHO. I'm not too keen on all the games I've already purchased becoming obsolete. |
that mockup looks very good except for the teeny screen. if the clamshell screen top was the full size of the base, widescreen, that would be very cool

Originally posted by young i don't buy either the cost reason nor the quality control reason. displays are relatively cheap and quality is not really an issue for small displays. having 2 displays and the required framing, wiring, perhaps movable hinges, would outweigh the cost of having a wider screen driven by one gpu. 2 displays is a paradigm shift that isn't going to be driven by cost issues or quality issues. it must be b/c nintendo thinks that that is an innovation that makes gaming more fun. |

Originally posted by Outlaw no need to be concerned, thats exactly what they said it is, this is not the successor to the GBA, it is a whole different side platform. If this was an announcement about GBA2 that just happened to have two screens as one of the features I would be much more excited. |
I wonder if we will be able to hook this up to a GameCube and get to keep track of THREE screens at once, maybe four if the GBA is connected too.
Personally, I would rather use the second screen for something non-game-related, such as email, web pages, and/or the interface for an MP3 player. You could get text messages that wouldn't get in the way of your game. Knowing Nintendo and their strict focus on games, though, that probably won't happen. If we can't get a new Punch-Out! game, the least they could do is port the original (with its dual-monitor setup) to this system. |
The virtual boy had some really cool technology behind it, and a few really good games that took advantage of it. This sounds like madness.
|
First: I still like my Virtual Boy. Sure I don't play it that much, but when I get the urge, it's there and the boxing game is fun. VB had potential, but they didn't spend enough time on it. We could have had some really cool games.
Second: This new system sounds interesting. The more I think about it the better things could be with it. I stress COULD. If Nintendo wants this thing to sell they should have a Zelda game and other RPG games ready at launch or not far off. They'll need big selling games, most likely with a following. Zelda would be the perfect choice. They could even bring back the old game play style of the NES/SNES days. Third: I'm a Zelda sucker. I'd buy it if they put one out on it. I'm going to buy Game and Watch 4 now that I know it has a Zelda on it. Nintendo needs to be smart about this. It could change the way a lot of us game. They already started the 2 screen thing with the Gamecube/GBA link up. They should just cancel that idea and focus their time on this for the games that you would need two screens. Wow, I hope that made sense. |

I don't know, I think this is another nail in the coffin of Nintendo's hardware existence. Nintendo doesn't need another platform to support. Third parties won't go for it, and third-party support is what makes a console these days. And really, it really sounds more like a market test of new technology, to gather enough information to advance the technology for some useful purpose in a future console.
What they really need is to address two things: one is to fix their poor console showing; and the other is to deal with the PSP head-on. Right now the GBA is Nintendo's saving grace, and without that stronghold in the handheld market, they are history as a hardware provider. I think it's safe to say we are all itching to get our hands on the PSP, nuff said. This is going to drive away third-party developers, tick off retailers to have to carry another platformer. It's the Virtual Boy all over again. Jeremy |

I know this is a little off topic, but I don't think Nintendo has to worry about the PSP at all. Without even seeing it, I can tell you right now that I will still rather have my GBASP than it. From the sounds of things the PSP will have the graphical standards of the PS1, Saturn era (This is just a guess from what I've seen. I could be wrong), which I feel was the low point for gaming. I would MUCH rather have beautiful sprite graphics than blocky 3D graphics. I'm sure I will still purchase a PSP when they come out, and I'm sure I'll enjoy playing it, but I don't see it replacing the GBA as the number one portable system, if not for the games the price alone will keep the GBA number one IMO.

i still predict a price point of $150 for the PSP, if not $100. it's the only way they can be viable in my opinion when competing w/ the gbasp.
|
I agree that it would need to be at that price point to compete, but I'm expecting to see a price tag of more around $299 when it is released. Sony makes some great products but they're usually more on the expensive side.

Could this possible be some sort of 3D head set? Making a stero-gram type effect is the only real reason I could think to have two screens. It's not like you can look at two screens normal at the same time anyway.
|
No, it's not a 3D head set.
The idea is to have two views at once. Like a map or radar on one screen, and the main game on the other. Or for a sports game you could have say the whole soccer field on one screen and the normal zoomed in view centered on the ball on the other. Or various other possibilities. |

Originally posted by rfduncan Yuck - that is the WORST idea in this thread so far. If you want email, MP3 player, etc., buy a cell phone that does that. Adding all that stuff into this product would only cripple its gaming potential. Personally, I think overloaded combo products are bloating the market these days. The more you shove into a product, the more there is to get broken (e.g. TV w/DVD AND a VCR?!?!). I never want to know about email when I'm playing my GBA! |
