this wired article is pretty interesting:

article

it speculates about what will be contained in the DS.

Wireless, 3D, motion sensor controls, etc.

Sorry if its been posted before. I didn't feel like reading the whole thread over again.

Here's a DS faq from www.1up.com. Not anything new, but it at least consolidates what's known into one place.

Nintendo DS FAQ

Everything we know and think about the Nintendo DS system, conveniently packaged for you right here.

So, Nintendo has a new system?

It's an all new portable system tentatively called the "Nintendo DS" ("DS" for "Dual Screen") that will have two 3-inch TFT LCD screens together on one machine. Click here for the full unveiling article.

Is this the new Game Boy?

According to Nintendo, no -- this is an all new system that will be treated as a third main piece of hardware for the company to support alongside GameCube and Game Boy Advance.

How will two screens work together?

As Nintendo's press release describes it, "In a soccer game, users can view the whole game on one screen while simultaneously focusing on an individual soccer player's tackle or goal on the other screen. Players will no longer be forced to interrupt game play to shift perspective, such as moving from a wide shot to a close up, or alternating between a character's ongoing battle and a map of the environment. Nintendo DS makes it possible to perform the tasks in real time by simply glancing from one screen to the other."

How do the two screens fit together?

We don't know exactly what it will look like, but the two screens will be stacked on top of each other vertically.

Will the system use cartridges or have an optical drive?

Likely due to the power constraints of having two screens in the same unit, the system will not have an optical drive like the PSP.

So is this a competitor to Sony's PSP?

It's scheduled to come out around the same time, and both will be revealed further at E3 this year, but we're not 100% sure the two will be direct competitors. Nintendo's dual screen approach is not the same as Sony's high tech promises. Nintendo's President, Satoru Iwata, claims, "We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century."

Doesn't this sound like Nintendo's "connectivity," where you can connect your Game Boy Advance to your GameCube?

Yes, and that technology has come under criticism, partially because it is logistically difficult to gather multiple Game Boy Advance systems and connector cables together to play one game. That problem seems to be solved here, since every system will have the two screens built in.

Are there any official technical specs?

This link will take you over to our news story that discusses the types of processors, the backlight, and why it's somewhat like Tapwave's Zodiac portable system.

How much will it cost?

We can't be certain yet, but analysts have been speculating on a price of under $150.

What do we think about all this?

What do the readers think?

What's Next?

The press release claims that having two screens is only one of the big features of this new machine, and that many more "innovative advances in game interaction" will be shown at E3 in May. After that, we can expect a worldwide release by the end of the year.

beefjerky 01-29-04 03:51 PM

Now what would be interesting is if one of the screens had 3D capability, and could display maps and other static images in 3D. You could turn this feature on and off whenever you wanted to. It's gimmicky, but it would be pretty cool.

tanman 01-30-04 10:21 AM

I seriously doubt it will have 3d technology.

It is a brand new technology that just barely has become mass producible and only in a very limited function. My understanding is that they are still very expensive which is not something that N goes for.

Useless interview indeed

Advertisment links in articles? Begone, foul wretch!

This is the most popular thread I've ever started! Sweet ;)

I don't think it'll be 3D either by the way.... Too tough in a portable. You need a headset or a large screen to convey 3D effectively.

New Rumor: It will not be backwards compatible to the GBA, but will use a special SD-type memory device (Play MP3s?).

It has already been stated that it isn't the next GBA which is one of the major reasons why I question its success.

jediwicz 02-06-04 04:31 PM

Sega just said they've been aboard and developing since last year. The DS wasn't shopped to American developers until recently-hence announcement. Cool.

Some new DS rumors/news:

-NDS will be downward compatible with GBA
-One of the two screen is a touch screen, which can accept input from a pin or finger
-NDS will have wireless data communication support
-NDS will cost around 13700 yen to manufacture
-NDS will have graphics capabilities similar to the Nintendo 64, it can deliver both 3D and 2D sprite based graphics
-Games will be delivered on memory cards using Matrix Semiconductor technology, which is cheaper and faster to product than GBA cartridges

I didn't expect it to have N64 graphic capability. If this is true, then I would expect a remake of Super Mario 64 would be in the works. Imagine a remake of SM64 along the same lines as Metroid Zero Mission!! :D

If this is true...

I hope they fix the fog problem.

Say no to Superman 64 DS!

The Franchise 03-11-04 01:40 PM

New specs just got released.... Sounds pretty impressive. I don't understand why this isn't the successor to the GBA?

From CVG.com:

The hardware specs of Nintendo's much debated DS system have been released via an alleged leaked Japanese document.
According to the document, the DS will boast the following features:

An ARM 7 and ARM 9 processor, with the ARM 7 running at 33MHz (the GBA's ARM 7 runs at 16.8MHz) and the ARM 9 running at 67MHz.

It will also come with 4Mb of system RAM, as well as 32K of processor RAM for both ARM 7 and ARM 9, and 656K of VRAM. The ARM 7 processor will ensure compatibility with GBA software.

The two screens both offer higher resolution than the GBA, with 256x192 pixels compared to the GBA's 240x160 resolution. More intriguingly, at least one of the screens is said to be touch sensitive.

Which presumably means a version of pub-favourite Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is on the way, though we'd imagine Miyamoto and co. are cooking up something rather more innovative than a quiz game to make use of such technology.

The DS has a powerful 3D graphics capability, with the ability to push as many as 120,000 polygons a second. 2D abilities are on a par with the GBA, with four scrolling backgrounds and 128 on-screen objects possible at any one time.

The DS will also feature the same button configuration as the Game Boy Advance system: D-pad, A and B buttons, L and R shoulder buttons, though Nintendo is reportedly still considering whether or not to use the X and Y buttons for a SNES-style layout; the document refers to these buttons as "to be determined".

As hinted at before, something known as 802.11 wireless LAN connectivity is also part of the package; some reports are suggesting that the system can link up to 16 systems using the wireless technology, though there's certainly no official word on this.

Indeed, all the details remain unofficial for now, with Nintendo refusing to comment as to the legitimacy of the leaked specifications. However, North American developers for the DS have reportedly verified that the specs are on the money to the US press. DS is set to be fully unveiled at this year's E3 show.

PixyJunket 03-11-04 02:03 PM

Does indeed seem to be a GBA 2.. perhaps they plan to have both on the market for different types of games created per system. I could easily see the cheaper GBA being marketed with kid friendly software (such as the Disney and Nickelodeon stuff) and making the more gamer-targeted games (I refuse to use the words adult or mature because that would imply shitty games) to the DS. Having GBA compatibility ensures DS owners won't get shafted if say, a new Mario appears on GBA.

I like the idea so far, but I'm still a bit in the air how the 2 screen thing will look/work.

flashburn 03-11-04 02:11 PM

If they dont include 4 face buttons, I will punch them!

jediwicz 03-11-04 03:00 PM

I just saw a Motorola commercial on TV and they were showing some crazy future cell-phones (ultra small with slidey thingies). Those new wireless adapters for the GBA are running on Motorola technology and there are now supposed kiosks being set up to wireless download stuff (JOYSPOT). On top of that the new DS is supposedly uber-wireless with a huge range (cell phone style) and can accomodate up to sixteen players. Hell f'n yeah.

Bomberman must be made for this machine.

tanman 03-11-04 03:32 PM

I'm still pretty skeptical.

I'm not sure if the market can support two handheld systems let alone three? I don't know what they are doing with this one. I would rather them make this the successor to the GBA.

3d games on a handheld? I don't know. It sound like It would make me sick.

Outlaw 03-11-04 05:54 PM

There are some fairly reliable tidbits being leaked saying that the Nintendo DS's code name (and maybe the official name) is the Nintendo Nitro.

It has also been found that the unit uses a touch screen on one or both of its screens.

And in addition it will have 802.11 wireless capabilities.

edit: I forgot to mention that its also been leaked that the system does have 3D capabilities and processors. But that makes sense if the DS is going to go up against the PSP.

I doubt they'd make me sick, but I still imagine it will be hard to see things in 3D on a small screen (i.e. ladders, hidden doors, and other crap in the background).

Plus, the only reason I have a GBA and GB Player is to play great new 2D games.

Thus I really have no interest at this point in the DS or the PSP.

flashburn 03-12-04 11:28 AM

Between the DS and the PSP it is starting to sound like the true death of 2d gaming. Booooo!
