By that I mean that it made people way too excited and there was no way it would have lived up to the hype even ifyou played with Snake through all of the game, the cinemas and codec conversations were cut down to reasonable lengths and the plot didn't spiral out of control towards the end. There was just way too much hype.

BTW, on a slightly different topic, I notice the sound was lot more agressive than it was in MGS2 (or its trailers). Now I know that there was talk about 5.1 and I'm sure it'll figure into gameplay strategies but what I really noticed were two things. (a)There's more bass in the audio this time around (though definitely not always, there were sometimes I felt the audio in MGS2 was missing a little oomph - like the fact that there would have reasonably been more bass when the RAYs were stomping around) and (b) the guns sound more three dimentional. I know this is just the first trailer but the sound in the trailers to MGS2 were pretty close to that of the final game so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

MGS 3 Tidbit
One small but significant detail on Snake Eater.
June 11, 2003 - One of the staple gameplay features of the Metal Gear Solid series has been the radar. Almost essential to the past MGS titles, the radar indicated enemy placement and range of vision -- things necessary to successfully navigate stealthily. How does this relate to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater? Simply put, the upcoming MGS title will not have a radar. At all.
What's this? No radar in Snake Eater?!? That's like Street Fighter with no fireballs, right? We're surprised with the news too, and one of the reasons given for the exclusion of the navigation tool is that the absence of it will create more tension. Also, with the majority of the game taking place in outdoor environments, the radar might not have been as effective as it once was. We think. And for those thinking that once Snake enters a more typical indoor environment the radar will be in full effect, think again. There will no radar, period.
So how will players know when they're in range of an enemy or not? We're not sure, but we'll go out on a limb and say that the new camouflage meter will play a big part, as will line of sight. Think a mix between Thief's stealth meter and Splinter Cell's plain line of sight implementations. We're just assuming all of this, of course, so don't be surprised if Kojima has something entirely different up his sleeve.
More information on MGS 3 is unavailable right now, and you can be sure Konami likes it that way. But as soon as some more info slips out, you'll be the first to know.
-------------------------------------------------------
Wow, it looks like Kojima is stepping up to the plate and not just sitting around letting Splinter Cell steal the coveted best stealth game award.

Omg, I hate that. I disliked splinter cell because of the lame guess work behind it. I'm sorry, but I enjoyed the MGS radar. How could they make a radar in jungle work? well How about making it static out every now and then. it creates a challange while keeping you grounded some. though this is a pre-codec snake so it does make some sense to not have radar. Who knows. I just disliked splinter cell style for my taste.
By the way, any High res footage of the FULL trailer from E3 online anywhere?

Well I liked Splinter Cell for the reasons you guys disliked it. Anyway - maybe they got rid of the radar for technical reasons... maybe they juiced up the graphics and had to lose that part of the HUD to keep the framerate down - I dunno.

That's my take on it. But they should offer some way to tell which way they are coming and so forth.
Asking again, any High res versions of the FULL trailer that was shown at E3?

Ressurecting this thread in lieu of some brand spanking new screenshots!! Check out the new stealth system which I think shows what your surroundings are and what type of camo you're wearing and what % you are hidden. Interesting.....

OMG!! Check out these synapse melting, rods-and-cones burning, frontal lobe bending, sphincter contorting, bladder vibrating, nausea inducing new screens!!!!!
Even I had a problem finding snake in some of those shots since the camo is so good. Really looking forward to this.

holy crap! those shots look nuts. I love the meter in the top right corner that tells you your percentage of stealth, and the type of cammo/cover you have.

WOAH! Is this game running in 720p, 1080i or 1080p? Because those screens are the cats' ass! The anti-aliasing looks awesome!
BTW: this was a sarcastic post.

Looks good - but it also looks repetitively redundant.
"oh, look. it's yet another jungle terrain to sneak through"
I'm hoping there's more variety to the environments than we've been shown so far.
But hey, it is still called METAL GEAR - so I'm sure there'll be some sort of variety in there.

Splinter Cell wasn't trial and error so much as requiring a LOT more patience and attention to detail to play right. You actually had to watch & play within the environment instead of focussing on radar. I don't mind them bringing that to Metal Gear at all, though they will definitely need a better camera system if they expect you to figure things out for yourself.

I liked the stealth action of Splinter Cell more than Metal Gear. When I played Metal Gear, I found myself looking and playing as the dot on the radar more than actually looking at the gameplay. In Splinter Cell, having to actually peek around corners and watching a guard until he actually turns around was a lot more fun and way more suspenseful for me. So I guess I agree with Trigger in that I liked Splinter Cell for some of the reasons some of you guys disliked it.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to MGS3. I'll probably buy this on day one.

CVG has some new gameplay details on thier site. They have a bunch of new screens but I thought these were the most impressive
Also some new details on the time frame of Snake Eater (taken from gamesradar.com)
__________________________________________
One of the scripts included a conversation between characters names President Johnson and Khrushchev which read, "The 'Davy Crockett' atomic battle group delivery system was completed two years ago. But serious problems were found with the system's range and precision and, although they were mass-produced, they've never been deployed in battle."
Lyndon Baines Johnson was the president of the US from late 1963 to 1969, while Nikita Khrushchev was the Soviet leader between 1958-64. Meanwhile, the direct Washington to Moscow hotline was installed in early 1963 following the Cuban Missile Crisis. So, assuming that the scene in question isn't a flashback, it looks as if Metal Gear Solid 3 takes place in either the winter of 1963 after John F Kennedy's death or 1964.
In addition, the Davy Crockett Battle Group is an actual battlefield nuclear weapon deployed in 1963, so it looks as if a major part of the game's storyline could revolve around this. More Metal Gear revelations soon.

Interesting info The Franchise. Perhaps the rumor of it taking place in the 60's and the main character being Big Boss and not Solid Snake were correct. There was a screen shot a while ago that showed the character using a knife, which supposedely Solid Snake doesn't like doing. Also, there's a movie on Konami's site that eludes alot to the 60's and Big Boss.
