First PS2 Splinter Cell screenshot looks good

I have both a PS2 and an Xbox, and I'm almost done playing Splinter Cell. The graphics are amazing to say the least, and while I don't expect the PS2 version to look as polished (there's no denying that the Xbox has a little more horsepower), I'm sure it'll still look great. Hopefully they'll be able to pull off the outstanding lighting effects since they play an important part of the game. As long as the gameplay remains intact, it'll remain an awesome game.

Here's two new PS2 screen shots from Gamers.com, they look pretty good.....
Remember they are still probably porting this over as we speak. So there's a chance these shots aren't the final product.

When is the PC version due out? It would challange the Xbox version much closer. The game play is outstanding regardless of the system but, the shadows and lighting are a crucial part of the game. This will be the make or brake feature of the game on the PS2 with out a doubt.

The shots look pretty good except that some of the objects look a little "off". Like the barbed wire on the fence that looks 2D instead of 3D. Maybe they are using some of the computational horsepower to run the lighting, which incidentally looks pretty good. I wonder if it's realtime or simulated to look like real time.... hmmm...

Ok so maybe it is slighlty inferior to the XBOX graphics. I don't think anyone can argue the fact the the XBOX has better graphics capability especially for a game optimized for the XBOX. Having said that these pics are not that bad. I only have an XBOX and I would definately recommend this game to those who do not have an XBOX. Beyond the amazing graphics the storyline and overall delivery are very entertaining. Buy it so they have more money to make an amazing sequel or add-ons to this game

from what I know of each console's hardware... only the Xbox has the capabilities of generating real-time light and shadow... both the GCN and PS2 will have to fake it with their version of the game.
I can't verify this, but it was my understanding that the GCN version would be a port of the PS2 version. The PC version will be most like the Xbox version except the graphics will be at higher resolutions. I'm gonna pick it up cuz I'm sure there are going to be expansion packs exclusive to PC.

The Gamecube can most certainly do real-time light and shadow effects.
Here's a link to a couple screens from the Cube version for those interested:

Aside from the graphics, does anyone know if it's an exact port or if there are extras included, like what happened with MGS2 and MGS: Substance?
Does anyone know if MS tried to make this exclusive for the X-Box?

I'm not sure if you mean the game itself or the extra's. But as far as the game itself, what I have read (along with my fellow DVDtalk forum posters) was that Microsoft was only able to negotiate a limited exclusivity deal thru the remainder of 2002. This gave Ubi the leeway to port Splinter Cell over to the other two consoles and to PC.

The gamespot impressions do look pretty favorable I must say. I was a little worried the play mechanics would be hampered by the graphical disparity between the games, but it looks like Ubisoft may have pulled it off. The graphics do look a little "muddier", but the lighting doesn't look half bad.

I'll wait until May and the GC version to give this a try. I have more confidence that the GC can pull off the lighting, given great lighting effects in games like ED and Metroid.
I'll have to rent it first though, because it sounds like it will be too stealth oriented and frustrating for my tastes.

We'll see. The GC version is delayed until May, with the PS2 version coming in March.
So they'll have a couple extra months to put in special effects.
But if they're not there I still check it out. If the gameplay is good, the lack of some graphical features won't matter to me. If their absences ruins the game, then it's not much of a game in the gameplay department IMO.

Some extras to be included in the PS2 version. Binoculars sound kinda cool. Wonder what the added cinemas are going to show? Maybe they'll be for the new levels on the PS2 and GC versions.

A Splinter of Information
I was just wondering about all the buzz that is surrounding the PS2 version of Splinter Cell. Is all of the added content going to find it's way over to everybody's favorite system, the GCN? I would be very disappointed if the content wouldn't be added to the Gamecube version.
Thanks for your time,
Nathaniel Heath
"Matt responds: Ah, yes. The GCN version of Splinter Cell. Here's what I know: It comes out on May 27. And yep, rumor has it that the GameCube version will indeed have its own set of unique features and options -- but, for the record, also totally different from the PS2 additions. Finally, the graphics on the GCN incarnation are supposedly rocking -- much more so than the PS2 one. First screens should be released in the not too distant future so stay tuned. You're not going to be disappointed."

They made this announcement a couple days ago:
http://www.splintercell.com/us/allnews.php#3133
Interesting points in no particular order:
- Dolby Prologic II support
- Four new "exclusive levels" plus 30 minutes of new cinematics
- Late March release date
Finally, there's this quote:
"State-of-the-art technology including the true-to-life dynamic lighting and shadow system, and new weather and ambient environment effects such as hazy heat, reflective surfaces, sea waves and depth and focus blurring, make Splinter Cell one of the most visually enticing titles on the system to date"
I'm not sure how to read that last part about "new" weather and ambient environment effects. Does that mean the XBox version doesn't currently have those features?

They make several cheeky references to those who think the PS2 isn't powerful enough to run the game. It does look pretty nice and seems to be coming along well.
