The recent announcements that several Hollywood studios are pulling out of ComiCon this year makes me think we're in for the long haul with this one.

Re: Writers Strike 2023

Well, the DGA officially ratified their new deal with the AMPTP

But, they have no scripts to direct from TV or movies unless there are some already completed ones ready to go.

The writers must hate them right now. I have an acquaintance who is a member of the DGA and he voted yes on the deal.

Re: Writers Strike 2023

The DGA rarely strikes, so this is unsurprising. The last DGA strike, in the 1980s, lasted for something like three hours.

I imagine the DGA members already being better off with pay.

Ooof. Not looking good for the WGA long term if everyone else comes to a deal.

Re: Writers Strike 2023

Well yea. But writers are at the bottom of the food chain as I understand. The other renewed contracts probably didn’t have to address much beyond inflation.

The creator of Squid Game probably wishes he was a WGA member.

Some people that love corporations are saying that if the guy just blindly signed the contract without counsel, then it's his own fault.

Dave Chapell still bitches about his Comedy Central deal and how he got screwed and he had attorneys with him.

Without Netflix Squidgames wouldn’t even be a thing.

It probably would still be a thing, just not a thing in America. Netflix distribution plays a huge part in the success of a show like that internationally.
Not saying Netflix is right screwing the writer over, but just that the show could have easily been made in Korea without Netflix involvement.

They have tons of movies and shows compared to the other streamers so they could be better off than the other companies

Re: Writers Strike 2023

The entertainment industry has a very high risk tolerance everywhere.

The ”best” movies can cause financial failure for everyone who isn’t paid upfront. Netflix spreads a lot of public money around and never has any idea what might catch on.

Because so many projects fail, the cast and crew are often the only ones who make money on a production. Anyone who gets paid up front.

Re: Writers Strike 2023

Deadline is now writing panic propaganda to freak out the writers.

Basically it says according to their sources, the studios want the writers to go broke before they go back to negotiating.

Since it's a Korean production, would it even be covered by the WGA or other American unions?

That’s such a shitty thing to say. Fuck those guys.
But why is it Deadline’s fault? If the studio guy wants to tell Deadline to get the word out, shouldn’t Deadline report the story?

Re: Writers Strike 2023

Just watching this play out from the cheap seats, it doesn't look like the studios are in any hurry to negotiate with the WGA, so the Deadline piece isn't terribly surprising.

Maybe, after the pandemic shutdown, the studios think they can weather an extended dry spell and are going to use that as leverage against the writers.

Re: Writers Strike 2023

FOX just released their "Fall schedule" today. It's all reality and Gordon Ramsay shows that's likely made for 10% of what they spend on an actual scripted show. The studios are in no hurry to talk to the WGA leaders.

Replace writers and actors with AI bots.

Re: Writers Strike 2023

The way executives handle shows, I think a case can be made that we'd be much better off giving their jobs to AI bots, and spreading their money among all the other people involved in making content.
