For the record, "MacGyver" ended 30 years ago (1985-92).

Yeah, that was what I was getting at, even if the current MacGruber skits aren't even referencing the original show anymore. Even when the skit first started it was already outdated.

But hey, there's popular skits some people dislike (I never liked Julia Sweeney's "Pat", or Al Franken's Stuart Smalley, hell the only good Matt Foley bit was the very first one), as well as weird 12:50 "filler" sketches that have me laughing my ass off.

Will Forte still has one of the best SNL moments of all time though, when he was the basketball coach who did the dance to the theme from Casino Royale. Of course, half of the fun of that was Andy Samberg and Kenan Thompson trying everything they could not to bust up laughing.

I don't believe that it is in SNL's mission statement to bring real rock to the audience, so I don't dismiss the validity of an act based on whether they are rock, rap, pop, country.

I don't care how the music is getting made, I would just like to enjoy hearing it, and since TV is a visual medium, I like it when acts "do something" to make it interesting to look at.

In all 100% seriousness, since I watch almost no music videos, they could just show those and I would be fine, as long as I liked the song.

Oh, the song is a very minor hit from the 1960s AND it was in Step Up 3D??? Of course, I should have recognized it!

I actually agree with you on the rock part. While I would like it if SNL was nothing but indie rock bands, that's never been their aim with the MG. In fact, if you look at the first few seasons, it's almost all soul, jazz, and funk bands (keeping in mind that at the time, SNL was still a gutsy "experiment", as no one stayed home on Saturday nights to watch TV. So it wasn't exactly the top destination for any talent, yet). There's some rock acts who were big at the time, and a few no-name indies who ended up hitting it big (like acts from the CBGB scene. Patti Smith, Talking Heads, B-52s. I wonder how the local Ramones never made an SNL appearance, ever).
Today's music scene is primarily driven by pop, and hip-hop, and it would be foolish of the show to not include those acts. So yeah, I totally see why they do that.

Where you and I disagree, obviously, is on the presentation of those bands. We just see it differently, as I want to see a live "concert-like" performance. I DO care how the music is getting made, and the thousands of concert halls and live music nightclubs all around the world indicate that a lot of people still want to see music performed live, rather than just watch a music video.

If anyone is that interested in seeing live music performed on a stage right in front of their eyes, it's Saturday night, go to one of the millions of concert halls and live music nightclubs all around the world and do it. This is a TV show that features about 10 minutes of music performance each week.

But yes, and I absolutely loathe this expression, we will have to agree to disagree. Like I posted before:
Well, at least I now know the depth of your conviction about this.

Well, if you put it that way...

I have two teenagers in the house and over the past few months, as they've been in TikTok, I've heard "Beggin'" as the backing tracking quite frequently... maybe that is what is adding to its resurgence.

I see the song was nominated as one of the top "Trending Songs" at the recent American Music Awards, so there ya go, I'm just too old to know or care about it.

I too was hoping for a Falconer sketch too or take out one MacGruber sketch.

A Hamilton Whiteman sketch should have been included in the call sheet.

Do all the people lamenting the heavy presence of MacGruber on the show understand that Forte stars in a MacGruber TV series that is streaming on Peacock?

That's why he was hosting to begin with.

Well, I definitely won't start watching the MacGruber show now that the character has become all about politics.

The show itself is similar to the movie, not the skits.

I think it was the hairdo on Ryan Phillippe that was throwing me for a loop.

MacGruber going all alt-right did fit the character well, but I hope to never see another reference to to that idiot Shaman again.
