But now ABC, NBC, and CBS all have their own corporate streaming service, so they have to decide whether to put content on broadcast TV or place it exclusively on their streaming platform as an enticement to subscribers.
Disney has ABC, The Disney Channel, Freeform and Disney+ that all provide original programming. That John Stamos coaches girls' basketball show could have played anywhere, for example.
I don't know the answer to this, but I am very curious about the strategizing and calculations that goes on within these companies about where to place the shows in an effort to maximize their profits.

I could see another ER or LA Law type show catch lightning in a bottle and be an Emmy contender. But they're not going to make a Breaking Bad or Sopranos or Succession, let alone a Game of Thrones. That's not in their business model, too expensive and risky. And the public would probably assume it's not as good as a cable show anyways. The last great inventive, important network TV Drama was LOST, and look how it's disparaged now.
Where they can still compete is in comedy. I would put The Good Place up against any recent HBO, Amazon or Netflix comedy. They can still turn out quality. And I think 22 minutes actually works better for Comedy run times than 30.

And in fairness to Lost, Game of Thrones is now widely disparaged as well. Yes, I'm guilty of disparaging both.

As somebody else pointed out, it really is difficult to maintain the quality through 22 - 24 episodes and then compare it against an 8 - 10 episode season.

Yeah, Lost and Game of Thrones both suffer from the same malady: They didn't stick the landing. The showrunners let them fall apart before the ending. They both set up great stories in the first halves, then crawled up their own asses.

That would be sad if all the good shows were on streaming and it was like wrestling and boxing where if you want to see the good stuff you have to pay extra.
A lot of shows on the broadcast or cable networks it seems had their series finale this year and maybe they are cutting costs so they can air more reality TV or infomercials.

and the award for the worst “In Memorial” segment goes to, the 2021 Emmy Ceremony.
Good God, scrap the live singers for some tasteful orchestra music and actually show the people you are honoring.

Man that was a painful broadcast. Cedric needs to remove his moniker because I was not entertained by him at all. So many dud bits. I didn't even smile until the cast of Schitt's Creek showed up. (I guess the Emmy Non-Winner support Group bit was okay, but that was due to Fred Savage). Didn't help that most of the awards were so damn predictable (except for writing and the one big award for Limited Series going to Queen's Gambit over Mare -- that was unexpected, but I missed it because I only padded my recording time by an extra 30 minutes!). The Crown did a total sweep of the Drama Awards. Wow. Not the greatest day for diversity when all twelve acting awards went to white people.
Conan at least was really funny.
Two tone-deaf moments I chuckled at : Hannah Waddingham asking television executives to cast more London stage actors in TV shows. Gillian Anderson thanking Peter Morgan for creating the character she played on The Crown (Margert Thatcher).

I thought the shot of the two people singing in the foreground while the names of Ed Anser and then Cloris Leachman (winners of seven acting Emmys each) were featured on small monitors in the background said it all. Yikes.

Jennifer Coolidge and Conan stole the show.

I saw there was some outrage online because Los Angeles has a mandatory indoor mask mandate by the county's health department, yet the Emmy's was conducted indoors and no one was wearing a mask. Some people were saying that this was BS and hypocritical that this would be approved for Hollywood, yet regular people have to abide by the "rules". However, they did require attendees to be tested and fully vaccinated and if you saw the end credits, there were people credited as COVID health and safety protocols people.

Yeah, it was a horrid show.
I recorded it and skimmed through it, and it seemed like there were so many celebrities wandering around the stage, and each category had about ten nominees, most of whom I've never heard of and whose shows I don't watch (or even know about) that it all just kind of blurred together in a big jumble of nothing.
And that "in memoriam" was insulting they way the cameras hung on the musicians instead of the deceased people they were honoring.
Who the fuck directed this shit?
