As long as he didn't submit the performance I have no problem with it. I assume Disney doesn't want their talent to torpedo their new Streaming channel's Emmy nomination count.

Why would Cheadle veto his emmy nomination? In what world would any actor do that unless they absolutely hated the movie/show they were in.

Numerous TV actors have withdrawn themselves from consideration, usually after winning multiple times and it becoming embarrassing. Just off the top of my head, John Larroquette, Michael J. Fox and Candice Bergen all withdrew their names from consideration after multiple wins.

Edit : And Matthew Perry didn't want to be considered a Lead Actor on Friends.

I know this is not news --that the legacy networks are no longer interested in producing high quality programming for a mass audience, but I feel like after 2020, with so many more people turning to streaming and subscribing to multiple services, that broadcast TV really is at its most irrelevant place in history.

As a cable-cutter, I think the only thing I REALLY care about having access to NBC, ABC or CBS for is live news and live sports. It makes me sad since I grew up in the era of the Big 3, when the entire country watched the same shows at the same time.
That stuck out to me as well while I was reading through the nominations. Network TV is being left in the dust. I guess on purpose because I haven’t seen the least bit of effort from any of the big three Networks to even try anything original. Cop shows, Lawyer shows, and Doctor shows will continue on until the bitter end.

Unless the Emmys have changed the rules, the system always was that a performer had to approve being submitted for nomination and the category. So maybe Cheadle can say that everything was done on his behalf by his team, but he's really supposed to be aware of what's going on.

According to Gold Derby, there were 60 submissions for Guest Actor in a Drama Series. So somebody submitted Cheadle. And he wasn't competing against hundreds of other actors.

What I find weird is that the show is considered a Drama Series. It seems like it's just as limited a series as WandaVision, but maybe Disney has plans for a continuing series?

I'd love to see The Boys win for best drama.

Seriously, though, The Great was robbed.

Tiger King got six nominations and The Great had two nominations ... for last year's Emmys.

As much as most of want to forget 2020, it did happen Schitts Creek cleaned up.

The drama category is a lot less interesting to me with no Succession and no Better Call Saul in the running.this year.

Wow, the death of the networks has really messed up my sense of TV Time. Ah, the old days of a Fall season and a Summer season.

I thing Fargo Season 4 got shut out as well, which is a shame because there was some good work by supporting characters there, especially Glynn Turman.

Certainly better than a couple minutes of Don Cheadle. ( I know . . . different categories, but still)

Johnathan Groff was funny in his five minutes of Hamilton, and did get a Tony Nomination for that performance, but it's not really in the same league and he got the nomination that Turman didn't.

Cheadle stars on an underrated comedy on Showtime right now, couldn't they have just given him a nom for that?

Is it called Ted Lasso?

So, no, they couldn't.

Don't feel bad for Cheadle -- He's been nominated twice for Black Monday - in 2019 and 2020, before that he was nominated 4 times for House of Lies. He literally couldn't have been nominated for that yesterday because Black Monday season 3 didn't air during the eligibility period (technically the first two episodes did, but per the rules since a majority of the episodes aired after June 1, it will be eligible for Emmy consideration in 2022 instead).

The big four 3 letter networks should be embarrassed that they were left out of most of the nominations or maybe they only have room for shows like the Bachelorette and Love Island.

I bet 10 years ago most of the top notch streaming shows would be airing on channels like AMC, FX, and TNT.

The Television Critics Awards list of nominees seem way better than the Emmys'

There are plenty of Dramas on The Big Four, of varying degrees of "quality".

But in the last decade, only NBC's "This Is Us" is of a high enough quality to manage nominations for Best Drama.

It made sense that for decades the networks would trade off broadcasting an awards show that preached to the public about the quality and value of the networks' own shows. Now it is like going to IHOP and finding it plastered with advertising for better restaurants.

I wonder if the networks loosened their standards or did not bow to sponsors if they would make their shows more racy or risque like the premium channels and streaming and the shows would be better,

I wonder if they created a third season of TV outside of fall and summer and shortened the seasons to a more manageable 10-13 episodes like Netflix, Prime, HBO, etc.as opposed to 20-24 episodes. Maybe that would open it up to higher quality programming.

Of course, I also think networks don’t feel they need to change anything due to the advantage they have with ratings being free to viewers.

Re: 2021 Emmy nominees -- Show: 9/19/21 -- Host: Cedric the Entertainer

I could see another ER or LA Law type show catch lightning in a bottle and be an Emmy contender. But they're not going to make a Breaking Bad or Sopranos or Succession, let alone a Game of Thrones. That's not in their business model, too expensive and risky. And the public would probably assume it's not as good as a cable show anyways. The last great inventive, important network TV Drama was LOST, and look how it's disparaged now.
Where they can still compete is in comedy. I would put The Good Place up against any recent HBO, Amazon or Netflix comedy. They can still turn out quality. And I think 22 minutes actually works better for Comedy run times than 30.
