Re: The Mandalorian: Chapter 10: The Passenger (S2E2) - 11/6/20
To me, this show is like those 90s syndicated shows like Hercules, Farscape and Xena. It's just higher quality. A family-friendly adventure of the week show, with an overlying universe to tie it all together. I think it's fun. Baby Yoda cracked me up this ep with his egg-eating.

It's a weekly western. Set in the SW universe, but it's just a straight up western. I have no problem with it just telling stories and taking its time.

Yeah I think we have been accustomed to the Netflix binge model where every episode has to advance the A plot. While I'd like to see where that plot is going, I'm also enjoying the ride there. There were a lot of things that had the feel of the original series such as when the Republic pilots questioned Mando's credentials and the X-Wing/Razor Crest chase down into the planet caverns. This really captured the spirit of the OS for me.

I'm enjoying it. I'm fine with the format of telling one complete adventure story while working on their bigger goal. Don't really see it as filler either when this is what the show is.

Re: The Mandalorian: Chapter 10: The Passenger (S2E2) - 11/6/20
This show is one of the best shows on tv, any streaming service, whatever, hands down imo. This season (the two eps at least) has been thrilling, funny, surprising and this episode especially creeped the fuck out of me. I was really on the edge of my seat when those spiders were swarming. This is just excellent tv and amazing storytelling. So what if they seem isolated, what show on tv isn’t, that isn’t serialized?
This at least, as others have said, moves the story with each incredible episode to finding other Mandalorians. It’s complete geekdom, fandom, what have you. Seeing the X-Wings was bliss. It’s just a damn fine show, run by damn fine people and Favreau’s writing is spot on and fits perfectly in the Star Wars world. The directors, this one by Ant-Man’s Peyton Reed, are just fantastic choices and take their ques from Favreau, but leave their own indelible marks. Each and every one has brought something different and new, but at the same time keeping the cohesion of this particular universe very much in tact. Each ep leaves you wanting more each and every week and makes you eagerly anticipate the next ep. It’s tv that completely entertains and sometimes leaves you gasping by the end. I even stick around for the glorious artwork that runs through the credits. That’s what tv should do and this one does it in spades. When this show is complete and has told its full story in total, I have no doubt it will be among one of my favorites of all time and will gleefully rewatch from the beginning many times. I will even buy a complete series set and pray they include commentaries and the extras, that we also get from Disney+’s making of series that they did for Season 1. Thoroughly enjoyable, thoroughly entertaining and as a long-time Star Wars fan, thoroughly authentic. |

Great episode. I got weirdly giddy when the X-Wings flew in. They are so iconic and are my favorite ships after the Falcon.
Loved the jet pack bit too  |
Re: The Mandalorian: Chapter 10: The Passenger (S2E2) - 11/6/20
Oh geez, This forum was totally spoiled by serialized content. Now stuff that's self contained or standalone that’s tells a complete story in one episode isn't satisfying?
Now even a lot of the newer serialized shows don't even get talked about much here unless it’s some popular IP. |
Re: The Mandalorian: Chapter 10: The Passenger (S2E2) - 11/6/20
They need to step up the story. It's becoming just the same bunch of elements: Mando looking for Mandorians but gets involved with some side quest, baby Yoda does something cute but gets put in some danger also, some creature is introduced from an old Ralph McQuarrie painting, throw in a bunch of direct SW references (R5-D4, sand people, Boba Fett, the cantina, etc.). Hopefully they do something new next episode.

I liked that a lot. The spiders were amazing FX. Really looked good. I dig this show so much.

I watch a bunch of comic-based shows and that's the basic structure of a story of the week with a continuing story they focus on here and there until the end. It's nice to have a few of those so every show doesn't just feel like a ten hour movie cut up into parts.

It was fine, but disappointing.

Re: The Mandalorian: Chapter 10: The Passenger (S2E2) - 11/6/20
This show is suffering from the same thing as Discovery this season...not at all moving the main plot forward. The difference here is that the content is so damn good, better than Discovery has been. Popping those eggs like they were candy was a bit morbid though. Probably not the best idea when the mother was a character we were supposed to have empathy for.

Baby Yoda is a rat bastard.
How am I supposed to have sympathy for the character if he spends an entire episode devouring a sentient species’ young? |

I mean Discovery just spent a whole episode on PTSD with the crew - you're NEVER going to see that in Star Wars. |

I’ve actually stopped watching a bunch of those because the stories have gotten too convoluted just to keep it going (especially “big bad” enemies who should be easy for the heroes to take out). This show is a nice change of pace.

That's a great analogy and you have made me look at the show now in that context. I don't think I would even question the show if it came out in 1997 or even the earlly 00's because most TV shows were week to week standalone episodes. But we live in a Post-Sopranos TV era where we are conditioned (atleast I am) to expect every show to have an big picture arc, a season arc, and even week to week to flow right into the next week. Obviously you guys are right and it's more like the 90's Hercules/Xena shows on a Friday/Saturday night we used to get. I'm glad you guys enjoy it but I'm just too far gone where I want every TV show now to more serial-like and not a weekly standalone. But that analogy really opened my eyes, thanks!
Edit: Also why does everyone always credit the Sopranos when Deep Space Nine had been doing the continuous story arc thing several years before they did? |
