Toys also need to be tested to make sure they don't possibly cause injury to a kid.

You just can’t make Baby Yoda toys and figures on a whim. It involves months of design, testing and such. Toy companies aren’t reactive....quick quick quick we gotta call the China plant and start cranking out the toys ASAP.

You guys are right. If only Disney had known they were creating a Star Wars show. I guess it caught everyone by surprise.

They made toys from the show but just not of baby Yoda. There are plenty of other characters (Mando, IG-11, some of the other Mandalorian characters, Jawas). Heck I actually give Disney/LucasFilm credit for holding back and not spoiling the baby Yoda.

I don’t know. Someone at Disney dropped the ball? They knew the Mandalorian was premiering at the beginning of November. They knew Baby Yoda was part of it. If they were on top of it they would have had Baby Yoda merchandise rolling out as soon as the first couple of episodes aired.
I don’t think it was Favreau telling them to lose out on millions of dollars to avoid spoilers. That doesn’t make any sense to me.

If they had baby Yoda toys ready to sell the week after The Mandalorian debuted, then his existence would have been leaked months ago.
When it comes to Star Wars, toy leaks usually provide the first confirmed spoilers about characters and ships.
I'm guessing Disney made a judgment call here, thinking it better to keep baby Yoda under wraps until the series debuted, rather than let it get spoiled in order to have toys on the shelves for Christmas.

That makes more sense than anything else.
I would still consider it dropping the ball but the theory of avoiding spoilers doesn’t hold water. Especially since they recently released a bunch of spoilerific toys prior to the release of Endgame just a few months ago.
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe they planned to release Baby Yoda at the beginning of 2020 this whole time. I’m sure Christmas toy sales aren’t all that big anyway.

There are already multiple articles explaining why straight from Favreau so there is no need to guess. Toys generally need to start production a year in advance and almost all Star Wars leaks previously have happened because of merchandise. They didn't want the character to be spoiled.

So a Disney exec is thinking, 'hey, lets make action figures, Pop figures, cosplay helmets/gear, apparel, soundtrack... the whole kit and kaboodle for The Mandalorian." and then... "Let's wait and see how people react to the show before we make anything with Baby Yoda."
Yeah, that makes more sense than anything else.

I didn't know they've made anything else for the show, I was just going by the Baby Yoda question only. If they've have made other stuff then yeah...

And I don’t want to hear “it takes a year to develop toys” and “they need to be tested” bullshit. That still doesn’t make sense.

Whatever. Just release a toy as is...who cares if pieces can become a choking hazard.

Then why the major delay? I would buy the “no spoilers” explanation a little more if Baby Yoda toys were withheld for a few weeks longer than the rest, until he was revealed on the series, but what’s the explanation for 6+ month wait.

But yeah, wait until the show has revealed a character that people want and only then begin to develop the toy so it can be released 6+ months later. That’s totally normal.

I don't know... plenty of toy mock ups leak and ruin stuff. It happens all the time. They probably didn't want anything out there at all.

This is from an interview released today:
You worked with Disney to keep Baby Yoda out of the prerelease marketing and the initial wave of toys. How did you manage to pull that off and why?
I think that part of what people really value is to be surprised and delighted, and I think that's becoming all too rare. It's very difficult to keep secrets about projects you're working on. By holding back on that one product, we knew that we may have had the disadvantage of not having toys available day and date, but what we got in exchange was an excitement surrounding the character, because everybody felt like they discovered him together. That emulated more what my experience growing up was like.
So Disney was on board?
Yeah, they understood the value of it. I felt that if we really wanted to connect with the Star Wars fans, we had to let them discover the story as it was unfolding. The marketing team and the leadership were all supportive of what my instincts were, and I think it paid off really well because now people are excited to tune in every week to see what happens.
