It would be too expensive to recreate the set for just a couple of scenes here and there. It would seem odd for him not to go into Cheers and visit his old friends though. They may need to come up with an explanation as to why he doesn't want to visit the Cheers bar. Maybe he'll be a recovering alcoholic in the new series or he has sworn off alcohol for some other reason.

re: Frasier (Paramount+) - revival series - premieres 10/12/23

I just remember an article at the time of that Boston reunion episode where the Frasier producers stated that the Cheers set was packed up and kept in the event of a Cheers Réunion special (which never happened, but the Friends reunion did the same thing with their set).
That Boston episode had Frasier meet Norm, Cliff and Carla at some other place like a hotel lobby. I forget what their excuse was. I will try to find the episode and figure it out.

I wonder if Laura Linney was offered a spot in this or if they were never planning on bringing back her character.
Curious as to why there are legal issues with the set. Is it that the actual bar has some sort of opposition or something with the set designer/designers?

It's been thirty years since Cheers ended. I would think Sam, or whoever still owns it, would have remodeled it in that time, redoing the place in a more contemporary style for a younger, hipper clientele instead of keeping it the same for septuagenarian Norm and Cliff.

I could actually see seventy-five year-old Norm and Cliff sitting in remodeled Cheers slurping draft beer surrounded by man-buns and vintage queens.

The event was in honor of Cliff’s retirement. The excuse was along the lines of Sam having the bar already booked for a private reunion with his Red Sox teammates or something similar. Which explains his absence as well.

There was an interview with Ted Danson on one of the late night shows years ago, and he had said that he had part of bar portion of the set in his rec room and he also had the picture of Geronimo that was originally from the actor that played Coach.

All the Friends characters moved out of their respective apartments (the main two anyway), so there wouldn't seem to be as much need to retain the sets for those since it would be unlikely they would move back into them years later.

I have to believe Sam will no longer own Cheers and the characters aren't kicking around Boston anymore (we know Cliff retired to Florida), because Frasier being back in Boston and not hanging around the bar and the guys (or even with just occasional cameos) wouldn't make sense. And if they explain why the Cheers characters are no longer around, then why tie him back to Boston anyway? Wasn't he headed for Chicago in the finale? Just have him end up there... or anywhere else really.

Choosing Boston seems odd if they don't intend for it to have some connection to Cheers when you think about it. Maybe they have some intention to revive Cheers at some point in a similar way to Night Court's revival. Like Night Court, a new Cheers show could have just one original character like Norm on the show and the main character running the bar could be a son of Sam's from one of his many girlfriends.

Yeah, if you’re putting Frasier back in Boston and not doing anything with Cheers that seems like a strange choice. Seeing as how that’s where the character as we know him originated.

Not saying this needs to end up a Cheers revival nor would I want that, but to not have the occasional pop in from any of those characters would seem like a total missed opportunity and be kind of odd.

I suppose some of the reason for having Frasier back in Boston could be because of his son and maybe Lilith could appear once in a while.

Though I’m not sure what more can really be explored with Lilith as she and Frasier aren’t married and their son is old enough where the dynamic between him and his parents would be different than if he was younger.

It's been years since I've seen the episode, but didn't Cliff decide to stay in Boston by the end of the episode?

Their kid would be 34 today. It makes sense mathematically/chronologically - but still seems weird.

Didn't know this even filmed yet.
Any word on cast or set-up? What cityscape is that with the suspension bridge they show at the end?

They filmed it last year. A friend of mine went to a taping in Los Angeles.

Also, the Zakim bridge is not a suspension bridge (useful info, I know).

They could say Sam got the bar rehabbed on an episode of Bar Rescue. Include a Jon Taffer cameo where he comes in for a drink years later to see how the place is doing, looks at Cliff and Norm and asks "This is still the crowd my idea brings in?"

Producers will have scrambled eggs all over their face for not throwing a bucketload of cash to David Hyde Pierce to return

I watched all of Cheers this year and am now on season 3 of Frasier. I'm going to watch this, but it's hard to picture it without Niles.

I think this has as much promise as the Night Court revival - which is little.

Maybe but at least this seems to be trying to completely reinvent itself. Night Court tried to rehash Night Court.

I think it’s a good movie to have Frasier return to Boston without the majority of the cast. It worked the first time. Might as well try it again.

And that’s coming from someone who wasn’t a huge fan of Frasier to begin with. I watched it from time to time but never loved it. And the Niles/Daphne will they/won’t they shit got old super quick yet they hammered it into the audience season after season.

Wow you made that assumption based on a 30 second animated graphic?

They aren't in this, besides single appearances from Lilith and Roz.
