Yes. They fill in some big blanks in his history.

Re: Forever (ABC) -- Series Thread

Given all the news this week I purposely avoided updates on ABC's renewal scorecard. I'm glad I was able to go into this unspoiled to see how things developed.

Before details - if any of you have unfinished episodes, please do yourself a favor and finish out the season. I'd be surprised if you were disappointed.

I am really happy with how they chose to let the plot unfold. Some amazing backstory with Adam <spoiler>for half the episode I thought he was Julius Caesar!</spoiler>. It was great to see all the plot threads, or the cat and mouse between Henry and Adam, come together. Really a memorable dynamic.

Even the last scene with Lucas was a great summation of how Henry's relationship with him has developed.

The final sequence with Joe was very suspenseful and moving as well. Aptly foiled by detective work.

I am quite sad this won't be coming back. The cast had great chemistry and the writing is miles beyond Castle these days. I watched all of Agent Carter too. And while I thought that was enjoyable, I'd much rather have a second season of Forever.

If released on Blu-ray, I'd definitely pick up.

Re: Forever (ABC) -- Series Thread

Star Ioan Gruffud asked his wife, Alice Evans, to relay a message immediately following ABC’s decision. “It’s brutal, but that’s show business,” she wrote.
“Ioan is a little shaken right now but he wants to reach out and thank the wonderful, loving fans who made the whole experience so magic.”

A few hours later, Gruffuddforeverep2 himself addressed the fans of the sophisticated procedural in a letter he posted on Instagram.
(you can read it below in its entirety) In it, he bids farewell to “the role of my dreams,” immortal New York City medical examiner Dr. Henry Morgan.

My dear friends, fans, supporters.

Tonight, as you all now know, I received a phone call that I was hoping not to receive, and to be honest I really wasn’t expecting it. I knew the numbers hadn’t been great, but I also knew the studio and the network both loved the show, and of course that it had an incredible fan base so I thought we were in with a pretty good chance.

But sadly no, this time the cards weren’t dealt in our favor. Show business is like that. Hell, life is like that. You ride to the top of the wave and then you come crashing down again. I asked Alice to send out the sad news because I was a little bit shaken up and needed time to gather my thoughts.

So I sat down and started reading the thousands of Tweets in response to the announcement. And the more I read, the more I couldn’t believe it. The love, the sense of solidarity, the hope, the kindness, the support. Not just for the show, but for each other. And slowly I began to focus on what we had gained in the past year, rather than what we had lost in the last five minutes. I was overcome by a sense of gratitude. To have met you all and to have you all rooting for me and the show. At having a chance to play the role of my dreams, even if it was only for a year. To have been given the chance to bring Henry to life.

Watching the interaction of the FOREVER fans come together and share their love for the show has been breath-taking. It was you guys who held me up when I thought I could no longer go on. (Those days were LONG!) You made me smile when you pointed out the little things I did on screen that I thought had gone unnoticed. You gave me confidence when I accidentally found myself reading less than shining reviews. You were always with me, every step of the way, waving your flags, shouting your support for the show. It’s been an incredible, wonderful year, one that I will never, ever forget.

And guess what? The memories belong to us. We get to keep them ‘forever!’ Thanks again a million times for your unwavering support.
Stay strong, be brave, and show kindness as often as you can! Ioan xxx

Shows of this quality do not come along too often. Bad decision by ABC. Maybe they can shop it to another channel. It would fit well on USA as an example. But still it was a nice miniseries if it never comes back. Damn, I really thought they might let this one find an audience but I guess Marvel clout won out.

I read that this is the one show not renewed and not owned by ABC. The other shows renewed during their first season were all in house.

Yeah, among people who follow these things then Forever was always at a much greater risk since it wasn't owned by ABC. If a show is successful enough then it can last (like how Fox ran House for years even though they didn't own it), but it needs to do better than average, sometimes even average isn't good enough.

Still, Forever just wasn't doing very well in the ratings that the advertisers care about, and over the season then the only shows it beat were also cancelled: Manhattan Love Story, Selfie and Revenge.

It did do very well in Live +3. I think it would be perfect on USA or TNT something like that. Does not seem like a really expensive show to do either and they could go down to 16 episodes in 2 8 episode chunks for USA or TNT

I may try to watch this over the summer. Does it end on a cliffhanger?

I'm also debating getting into 'Younger'

Not really. More of an open ending...like Journeyman another well made series and ended to soon.

Yeah, I thought it finished on a very good run.

Disappointed it was not renewed, but not surprising.

I'm starting to watch the episodes I haven't seen. I feel ok in watching the remaining episodes after reading this thread. I get the feeling that the EPs knew the high chance of not getting renewed and probably wrote things a certain way to end things on a mostly good note.

I agree, Forever could have been a good fit for USA.

unless things got much better after the first 5 episodes (when I bailed), I thought this was just as band and generic as any other ME/police procedural and just don't get the love. Hell, they even stole that one dude from Bones to basically play the same exact character for them.

It became much more complex as the season went along. With flashbacks, they really fleshed out his character. It became so much more than the death of the week. They stopped that, as well. If there was a death, it was part of the story and not just there as an empty reminder that he couldn't be killed.

It also had great chemistry between the cast and was fun for lack of a better term. Much better than any of the CSIs or NCIS shows in my opinion. Better than Bones and Castle as well in my opinion, but as always YMMV.

It did get much better after the first 5 episodes which may have been their downfall. It seemed the original concept may have been for him to die each week, but they strongly moved away from that, and the back story and character interaction and chemistry was exceptional. It was a truly fantastic show.

I guess I've been living under a rock....just found out tonight that ABC canceled this. I'm so pissed off right now. Easily one of the best new shows this past season. This reminds me of when NBC cancelled Journeyman after one season. Dumb, just dumb.

Re: Forever (ABC) -- Series Thread

I finally just caught up on my unwatched episodes. I liked the penultimate episode where they wrapped up the storyline with the wife. I did find it kind of outrageous how many things hadn't changed in 30 years to make the plot work. The landlady was still around, the sheriff was still a sheriff, the judge still owned the same car. Even the car crash had not been touched or disturbed. The sheriff also had to wait awhile outside to see her leave and then wait for the landlady to come by, who just narrowly missed the accident somehow. Just a lot of implausible events.

Knowing it was cancelled, I was hoping that Henry just would not appear in the river at the end, and Martinez would find his body. Having him finally die would have been a good ending for a self-contained season-long show.

Re: Forever (ABC) -- Series Thread

I bought this on Vudu since it was on sale and marathoned the whole season in a couple days. Overall, I though it was really good, but not amazing. It reminded me a lot of Elementary. Good chemistry between the characters and interesting stories. A decent way to waste an hour.

I wish there was more emphasis on the season-long storyline, because the Adam episodes were my favorites. I'm disappointed that was limited to only 4-5 episodes. Too many crime-of-the-week episodes.

If it had gotten another season, I'd keep watching. Would be nice if a cable network picked it up.

Re: Forever (ABC) -- Series Thread

When it first started I thought it was too much like New Amsterdam but it found it's footing and became the better show. At least it had an ending.

The problem is, they didn't know it was cancelled yet when they filmed the last episode. That's why they had the open-ended ending, so it could work as a series or season finale.

Just finished watching the series. It was a good (but not super fantastic) show. I will miss it.
