I guess I never knew how many people loved the Oberyn character. He just seemed like a random dude to me. I never had any connection to him.

Nice article, thanks for posting. I like he & Lena's take on the death, I am going to try and take that and run with it because...god damn it! I loved that guy. That really sucks.

I didn't really care about him until his "I'll be your champion" moment in the last episode. That and the chemistry between him and Tyrion suddenly made me care a lot more.

Yeah, he was a cool character, but I wasn't invested in him like Robb and Catelyn Stark. This wasn't really comparable to the Red Wedding at all. Certainly a shocking conclusion to the fight though.

I really loved this episode. The Sansa scene was great, Ramsey's scenes were great, Missandei has the most INCREDIBLE body I've seen on this show (seriously, holy god that was a welcome scene), I was saddened by the Jorah development, and obviously the trial by combat was very tense, especially since they saved it for the end and all of us were anticipating it.

Please, someone make a GIF of Missandei by the water.

The squishing and squirting sounds that accompany every single death are also a bit much. I had the same complaint about the rampant "sexposition" during the early seasons. Thankfully they've cut back on that a lot.

I already know how most of you will respond to this. I get it. I'm a prude or whatever. Generally speaking, I have no problem with violence and nudity, I just don't like when it's used so gratuitously. I know it's a fine line and everyone has different standards. I just think at a certain point it starts to draw too much attention away from the amazing writing/acting/production. It's one thing when you're just trying to amp up an already trashy/exploitational show (True Blood comes to mind), but Game of Thrones feels like it should be above that sort of thing.

Despite my misgivings, this was another very good episode in what has been an excellent season. There was even some forward progress on the Ramsay/Theon thread. I still don't care much, but at least it's going somewhere. I will also agree with anyone who says that Dany is a weak link. Other than the obvious dragons, I have never understood her appeal, both as an actor and as a character.
Are you a chick? Perhaps the Lifetime channel has more suitable content for you

Re: Game of Thrones -- "The Mountain and the Viper" -- 6/1/14

If you look at the trial by combat from Tywin's point of view, that was about the worst thing that could have happened. Things have been tense with Dorne for years, and now the Mountain has openly acknowledged what was done. It's one thing to kill Princess Elia and her young children. It's quite another to rape her, smash her children against the stone wall, and then kill her.

It would have been better for Tywin for the Mountain to keep his mouth shut and lose.

I thought it was kind of amusing that the only people who had a reaction were Tyrion and Ellaria. Cersei and Tywin hardly blinked at seeing Oberyn's head get crushed.

I don't have a problem with violence but.. *proceeds to complain about the violence.*

I don't think Oberyn's death would have had the same impact if it wasn't as graphic. That overhead shot was haunting.

Loved how Sansa turned all dark/Malecificent looking.

If anything, I think the violence is actually toned down from what is in the books. There's a lot of extremely grisly and unsettling stuff in the books (that's basically "torture porn" level stuff) that the show completely leaves out.

The times they follow the violence in the books rather closely (as in Oberyn's gruesome death) seems to be mainly when the storyline requires it.

I'd have to agree. I guess people became more attached to him once he offered to fight for Tyrion who everyone loves.

It was a rather accurate prediction of how Oberyn's fight with the Mountain played out.
Yeah...I read that little spoiler from someone last week that had to show everyone that he read the book.

Something like "...pay attention and listen to what Bronn says to Tyrion in this scene. It is important because in the next episode...*spoiler tag.*"

If that was you, thanks a lot for that cleverly hidden spoiler...we could never figure out what you meant.

Not even a little bit. If I can watch without looking away it's not that bad. Tosh.O is far more disturbing to me.

Actually it just said "If you rewatch the scene between Bronn and Tyrion, just listen carefully to what Bronn says..." (and then the spoiler tag)

Without saying anything about the next episode at all (unless you clicked the spoiler tag, that is ). And Bronn talked about his marriage and a bunch of other stuff in that scene aside from a little bit about the Trial By Combat. The only way I can see someone instantly figured out it was about how the Trial By Combat was going to play out is if they clicked the spoiler tag.

And you're welcome!

Have to be honest that I found some of the violence on Hannibal this season on network TV to be far more disturbing and unsettling that GOT. There were even a couple times I thought of looking away but have never thought that in GOT

Best line of the night IMO:

I related more to:

Oberyn: "Size doesn't matter when you're flat on your back."
Tyrion: "Thank the gods for that."

That was a beautiful line I had forgotten about after, you know, that happened.

I didn't click the spoiler, but still figured out what was meant by it. Oh well, I guess it makes some people feel good to spoil things for others, no matter how thinly veiled and clever they believe it to be.

Sorry, that's B.S. Only someone who already knew what was going to happen in the Trial By Combat would've figured out from that suggestion to just listen carefully. I could easily have been talking about his marriage instead.
