He didn't even need to be legitimized to have a better life. She could have just let him stay at Winterfell. He could have taken Ser Rodrick's place as Master of Arms or something.

I have not read a word of the books so this is just a TV viewer's speculation 5 minutes after seeing the episode.

Spoiler:
He should argue the fight was a draw since they both died. Surely a draw shows the gods have not made a clear innocent/guilty decision so any beheadings would be rash.

I was surprised they didn't explain or show why Oberyn was called the Viper (or the Red Viper), which was because...
Spoiler:
...he puts poison on his fighting spear. So he was poisoning the Mountain every time he stabbed him with one of his spears and still got his revenge even in dying.

Dammit I hate this show. I feel like the battered wife.

Every time they kill a character I like I say, that's it-I'm done. I'm out, but then they slowly introduce another one to make me route for and then bam! dead again. And I'm actually freaking angry at the red viper for yelling. Just kill him stupid! stop gloating! Have you seen this show! Kill that motherf#@3er!

Aghhhhh!!! Dammit. Angry and sad. Just like I am at the end of every season.

There's a problem with Ned making Jon a Stark...namely, he was older than Robb. He really couldn't make Jon heir to Winterfell

Re: Game of Thrones -- "The Mountain and the Viper" -- 6/1/14

Bah! The Red Viper deserved to die...the little cheat got a second spear after the Mountain had disarmed him. Might as well call Oberyn "Lance" (as in Armstrong). Good on Ser Gregor for treating his opponent like Bluto treats mashed taters.

Disappointed at all of the shaky-cam & swoopy-cam filming used during the Wildling attack upon Mole Town. Thought I was watching the opening from Quantum of Solace or a Bourne sequel scene. Ugh.

Yeah.. I didn't get that observation either. I saw it as her continuing to grow up and seeing all the viciousness in the world. She's no longer content being a meek little highborn lady. Plus, to me at least, it seems that she now realizes that she can attempt to manipulate Littlefinger because of his feelings towards her.

Also, I was surprised with the battle that they didn't really go into the details with the Red Viper, as someone else mentioned.

Re: Game of Thrones -- "The Mountain and the Viper" -- 6/1/14

I'm a non-book reader and I found this episode to be rather predictable.

I knew that Sansa was going to defend Baelish.

The winner of the fight was so telegraphed, it was obvious before it even began who would win.

About the only thing that did surprise me was Dany kicking Jorah to the curb. I'm not sure I like her anymore.

Is Jorah going to wander the eastern lands like Kung Fu?

Good to see Sansa finally take control of her own destiny.

And it would be nice if they would stop teasing this little Stark reunions.

Re: Game of Thrones -- "The Mountain and the Viper" -- 6/1/14

Some of you were "shocked" by this episode? Really? I barely remember this section of the books (I read them once, when they came out) and I didn't find anything particularly surprising.

Overall, I thought it was pretty good. I didn't think it was one of my favorite episodes of the what's been a very good year, but it definitely moved many plots forward.

Good:
The fight scene (except for the end)
Arya giggling uncontrollably at the Bloody Gate
Sansa's look at Littlefinger and her increasing emergence as a political animal
Barristan letting Jorah know that he knows (who had that boy inform Barristan?). Nicely handled little scene.
Jorah's pleading. Very well acted.
The gathering doom at Castle Black. The writing finally made it clear just how fucked the Night's Watch is in this episode.

Weak:
Emilia Clarke. To me, she's increasingly the weak link in the cast. She's simply not convincing.
The Viper acting like an over the top "talking killer". Overly telegraphed. This show is too good for that kind of obviousness.
Grey Worm and Missendei. He's. A. Eunuch. Enough.

"Hello. My name is Oberyn Martell, you killed my sister Elia Martell. You raped her. You murdered her. You killed her children. Prepare to die!"

Made me think of the sword fight in The Princess Bride.

But Oberyn does all that talking in the books too. He needed to hear the confession, he was obsessed with it. Guess you forgot.

Spoiler:

You can see what appears to be the blood pump by Oberyn's right leg.

They are the same age when the books start (14). Per the wiki, Robb is older. Obviously there are spoilers there too.

I wonder if the guards will be telling Baelish that they have a Stark at the gate.
I thought they both died. It looked like The Mountain fell over on his back and died. Or was he just exhausted?

No, I got it. How could I not get it? Regardless of the motivation, the scene devolved into one of the biggest film cliches: the talking killer.

But that was Oberyn's flaw. Instead of leaving the Mountain to just die, he gloated and taunted him trying to get a confession out of him and by extension accuse Tywin of giving the order publicly. Instead, his obsession made him lose focus and since the Mountain was not dead, at that point, he allowed himself to be grabbed and killed instead of emerging the victor.

That was more of a generalization. You can see that she's developing her wits about her and the last we see of her is in her new new gown looking at Bailish and giving him a seductive smirk. I have not read the books but it seems that she's going to turn into an evil person. Queen Bitch was just a label on my part. The foreshadowing there is self-explanatory.
