Anyway, I solved that problem much like y'all, but why did they even include the area of the parallelogram? You didn't need it to solve it. A right triangle with a hypotenuse of 10 MUST have 6 and 8 as the other two sides. Once you know that the width of the parallelogram is 11 (given), subtract the 6 and viola, you have the answer 5. And yes, I did say "viola". Kelly Bundy reference there.
Only if you want to limit results to integers. For instance, a right triangle with two 45 deg angles would have a side measurement of 5√2
(aka: 5 times the square root of 2, or about 7.07)

That's just wrong. A right triangle with a hypotenuse of 10 can have one side of length x, 0

OK, that makes sense. The drawing indicated that the height of the triangle was greater than the width, so I naturally assumed the base was the 6. But the area calculation takes away all doubt. The drawing is not necessarily to scale.

You can't assume anything about the relative sizes of angles or segments in a diagram.

Hell yeah he was. Even as cringe-y as those songs were, it wasn't really necessary for him to be such a prick.

As shameless as the Little Caesar's promo was, it was also kinda effective. I was actually thinking I hadn't had their pizza and crazy bread in a while, and if there was one nearby me I probably would have gone out and gotten some. I guess it's good that there's not one nearby, as I'd then remember how BAD LC is.

What I took from the episode was that when they were announcing the Nerd Anthem contest, they played the "Talk Nerdy To Me" song from season 1. Except that song LOST to the other team that year.

I'm really liking the nerd off challenges this year. They did a nice job of designing them. I liked the Indiana Jones one this week with the "rolling boulders' and the snakes, but I've just not been a fan of the nerd war challenges at all.

I wonder when Jonathan will realize that by being the only male member of the "Secret Six", he's guaranteed two things: One, to make it to the final six contestants. Two, to be the first voted into the nerd-off when it comes to cannibalization time.

This happens on every cross-team alliance on a reality show.

I didn't care for the Indiana Jones stuff, as the start of the nerd off seemed kind of silly and pointless. But I agree in general the nerd offs are more interesting so far.

Colby's face during these challenges and interviews are kind of funny. I really enjoyed the party games, although I didn't know who that girl celebrity was.

You sir are obviously not familiar with Under The Dome, CBS's monster summer hit very loosely based on Stephen King's book. When I say loosely, I mean it has virtually no relationship to the novel. That was the lead actress.

Season three has been much better than last season. This is a fun, likeable cast of nerds. Can they just burn the tapes to season two?

Re: King Of The Nerds - TBS

So glad no one caught this yet. Funniest moment... ever? Last night's episode.

I have to admit, I missed it my first time - rewatching the episode again since it's Saturday, midnight, icy and... it's on again.

When they're doing the "Act out the name" game? Colby. Alien.

Oh, but that? That's not the hilarious bit - when he starts writhing on the ground? Listen carefully - one of the girls shouts out, "Steve Irwin!"

... So, so, *so* wrong. Irwin, you might recall, died from a stingray barb to the chest - likely on a boat's floor, writhing. So wrong.

Also, glad I'm not the only one who had no clue who the celebrity chick was. Hot, sure - but... I call that getting screwed. One side, a man noted for having a genius level IQ (Penn, who I believe has been guesstimated at 160ish.) The other, a "pretty face starlet." The producers obviously *really* wanted the team that lost... to lose. But nah, putting someone who couldn't help declaring, "Newton? Did he even discover gravity?!" played no part in things, right? I can't stand those types of people - having to "toot their own horn." She was either going to be proud she didn't know it, or if she were right, could be amazed at her own acumen! (Point: Most people, when they aren't sure about something like that, don't have a natural reaction to specifically point that out after the fact.)

Well yeah, they said that's where she was from when announcing her. Never seen it.

In the games they played, I don't think being a genius matters much since most of the answers were basically just pop culture movies and shows outside of a few scientists. It's funny, I actually thought Penn was more annoying trying too hard to be funny with all the snarky responses he had. I didn't have a problem with the girl at all, she seemed to know enough geeky stuff just fine.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I never said Penn Jillette deserves man/nerd/genius of the year accolades. He doesn't - the guys an unquestionable sellout. I just saw him hawking some car in an ad the other day with Teller. Anybody who'd kneel before Donald Trump's you-know-what as Penn did - *especially* considering Penn's liberal/atheist views- on Celebrity Apprentice... has issues. (Maybe someone can explain this to me, too - aren't those two just raking cash in with their Vegas shows? I can't believe they'd need ever work again, much less seem so desperate, appearing anywhere/anyplace that'll have them.)

Plus, in this episode, Penn's atheism was just beyond inappropriate. There's times and places for that stuff - which ain't here.

That being said, you're still looking at a genius IQ, older, male *magician* (nerdy of nerddom) against some Hollywood A-type pretty face whose sole nerd claim to fame is being cast in decidedly non-Nerdy (but seen as being nerdy) works. Twilight... ain't nerdy. Under the Dome is often derided for being dumb and contrived - thus why I, an admitted fanboy, had neither seen nor heard of her before.

As far as her negative behavior/"tooting of the horn" thing? Case in point, the end: "I stand as tribute!" You *know* she was just waiting for the standing ovation for that performance, if not an Academy Award - it was almost literally written all over her damn face! So over the top and vain. Penn's an egotistical, opinionated jackass, sure, but that right there showed me she's just another Hollywood actress with an inflated sense of self-worth/relevance/value. Let's face it, it takes a certain type of personality to pursue that as a career - namely, banking on their looks/personality. In other words, sorts who see the Sun revolving around them. Penn might be little better, but at least he has the IQ/"street cred" to back it up. Put differently, place those two head to head in this exact same "set of games" -alone- and obviously Penn destroys her.

My issues with her personality/flamboyance aside, I still assert the producers put the fix in on this particular episode - without a doubt.

I must have glossed over these issues, I thought the teams ended up being pretty fairly matched in those party games.

Colby can't draw to save his life. A bow-tie might be the easiest thing possible to draw and he seem flummoxed drawing it.

I didn't understand that at all.

As for nerdy party games, I'd like to play nerdy spin the bottle with Rachelle Lefevre.

Even though I just watched this episode last night and have hate-watched every episode of Under the Dome, I had to Google her name to see who you were talking about.

Perhaps I should clarify so I don't come off as quite a big of a jackass - I just *really* don't like this new "Big Bang Theory" reality where everyone/anyone with the slightest bit of pop culture interest/knowledge suddenly believes they're uber nerdy/geeky/whatever.

This show has transcended that usually - just look at the last episode, all three musicians had serious, longtime nerd "street cred." Moby, monumental asshole he was, is still decidedly a hardcore nerd. Penn - a nerd. Some Hollywood actress who appeared in such masterpieces as Twilight and Under the Dome - who proudly declares "Newton - did he even discover gravity?!" Not a "nerd."

Put another way, a quote one of this season's cast members made really rung true with me: The nerdy "personality type," if you will, is one that has a running subscription to Scientific American.

So A: I hated seeing "vain starlet" encroach in this show that's usually, by and large, managed to look past/transcend the "Big Bang Theory" nonsense. B: I *really* hate what I see as producers putting a fix on, not simply having such an unprecedented -for this show- unbalanced deal as judges, but as *participants* in the *game*. Quite frankly, I don't see how anyone can't envision just how blatant a fix this was. Say what you will about Penn, I still stand behind my assertion as to their unmatched potential - something all the more glaring when you consider this one game, unlike all others, had the "outsiders" not judging as is almost universally the case through three seasons, but being a "swing" member playing, and so deciding, the outcome of the "game."

There's enough junk on TV that's scripted/staged/fixed, if I were interested in wasting my time on such a thing.

Under The Dome is consistently the finest hour of hate-watching on television. They have elevated it to an art.

You're awfully hung up on the Newton thing. Either way, I don't know enough about the actress to judge her so harshly or label her, nor do I even put much stock in requiring a celebrity to have nerd street cred for this show. Especially in the games they played, where Colby being unable to draw a bow tie played as much of a factor in their team losing then their celebrity team member.

I don't even really want to start on how ridiculous the Scientific American nonsense is.

I haven't subscribed to Scientific American in over a decade, though I occasionally pick one up at the newsstand.
