Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
I saw Coco in Spokane on Friday and while the show was AWESOME...I was kinda bummed there were no special guests. Reading how Seattle had Pearl Jam and Vancouver had Seth Rogen makes me wonder why no one awesome came to Spokane...oh wait, it's Spokane that's why.

Went to the second Seattle show tonight. It was a whole lot of fun. It truly is a variety show--comedy, music, video, setpieces, the whole shabang. It did lean a little bit too much on the music (Conan did 4 songs, the band had an extended song [which Pender rocked] and Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam did 3 songs), but the comedy bits (with the exception of a surprisingly limp Triumph appearance) were all really great, really fun and left a huge smile on my face.
When Vedder came out, it got an insane pop in front of the Seattle audience. Having heard little to no Pearl Jam, I didn't have much of a reaction. However, they did a pretty sweet cover of Baba O'Riley, AND apparently the first night had (ugh) Dave Matthews in that spot. I'll take Who covers and no Dave Matthews douche any day! Conan seemed truly awed by Pearl Jam. Afterwards he kept referencing back to how awesome it was. |

Give Leno time to find his audience.
- or - But are the local affliates happy with the 10pm lead-in? |

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
I've only seen the show a few times since Leno came back and was wondering if he's got new writers or something. The show is really really bad. As someone mentioned 20 pages or so ago, most of the "humor" is stuff that I got e-mailed to me a month ago by my retired uncle who forwards everything. Leno looks tired and his guests have been pretty weak. All in all, it's just tedious to sit through. I'm not surprised the ratings are slipping, but maybe they will bounce back in the May sweeps period when he gets A-list celebrities.
On the other hand (and off-topic) I used to think Fallon was terrible, but he really seems to have hit his stride and is more relaxed and natural. If you haven't seen his show since the start, check it out again. I was pleasantly surprised. You know what would be really funny? If NBC made Fallon switch time slots with Leno. |

Conan O'Brien to appear on '60 Minutes'
Exit deal barred host from TV appearances until May 1 Associated Press April 27, 2010, 07:42 PM ET Conan O'Brien will be on TV this weekend with his first post-"Tonight Show" interview. O'Brien talks with Steve Kroft on "60 Minutes," CBS said Tuesday. O'Brien's exit deal with NBC barred him from television appearances until May 1; the "60 Minutes" piece will air the day after. The interview was conducted last week in Los Angeles, according to a person with knowledge of it. The person, who lacked authority to discuss the matter publicly, spoke on condition of anonymity. O'Brien, who left "Tonight" in January over a time-slot dispute with NBC, has agreed to host a late-night show on TBS later this year. He's now on a national comedy tour. |

awesome. I'm gonna record that. I wonder if he'll take the high road or be brutally honest. I see him doing something in between.

But Mr. OBrien is still under restrictions not to disparage NBC or Mr. Leno. “He flirts with the restrictions,” [Steve] Kroft said in a telephone interview. |
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
It's not disparaging if it's true.
|
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
I'm surprised. I thought Conan's respect of history would mean his first interview would be on Letterman.
|
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Well, there's still his first disparaging interview to look forward to.

Looks like no more Max Weinberg:
http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethe...part-ways.html Conan O'Brien's Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television tour has been delighting audiences with all the usual players like Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Andy Richter, and of course, Conan himself. The only person who hasn't joined the party is O'Brien's long-time bandleader, Max Weinberg. His absence from the tour has sparked rumors that Weinberg doesn't plan to join O'Brien's TBS show when it premieres in November. In an interview with CityPages, music legend Al Kooper said that Weinberg and O'Brien have parted ways. "That's a name you can't say anymore," Kooper said when O'Brien was brought up. "He's not in that band anymore. They let him go. This is a big transition, and they're all signing new contracts and everything so they replaced him, as far as I know." Movieline reported earlier this month that Weinberg met with Jay Leno to discuss the possiblity of returning to "The Tonight Show" bandleader Kevin Eubanks, who's leaving this month. Those rumors didn't pan out -- the show hired "American Idol" music director Rickey Minor as Eubanks' replacement -- but Kooper also notes that there was a "lotta conflict" between Weinberg's work with O'Brien and his other steady gig as Bruce Springsteen's drummer. |
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Respect for Weinberg falling...
"lotta conflict" between his Conan schedule and Springsteen schedule means there'll be conflict even with Leno. Therefore, Max doesn't care how his other commitments affect the show as long as his name is billed and he's on (preferably network) tv. |
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Interesting. Wonder who they'll get to replace him. Maybe they'll just let his normal replacement, James Wormworth, be the drummer and Jimmy will be the band's "voice."

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Looking forward to Conan on 60 Minutes -- should be awesome.

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Sort of a bummer about Max. I liked the awkward chemistry that him and Conan had, but hopefully they'll get someone decent to fill his role as drummer for the band. At least Andy is back to fill in the sidekick role.

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Wormsworth is fine. I'll miss Max, but his bits were becoming a bit stale.

Conan: I would not have done the same to Leno CBS has released an excerpt from Sunday night's highly anticipated "60 Minutes" interview with Conan O'Brien:

But that's me, you know. Everyone's got their own, you know, way of doing things."
Asked by correspondent Steve Kroft what he would have done, O’Brien says, "Done something else, go someplace else. I mean, that's just me." O’Brien eventually left NBC, deciding not to play second-fiddle to Leno. He says he didn’t see the point in giving his all in a relationship that seemed to have no future. "I think this relationship is going be toxic and maybe we just need to go our separate ways," he says. "That's really how it felt to me. … And I started to feel that I'm not sure these people even really want me here. … I can't do it [anymore]." |
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Leno's rating are lower now that Conan's were, as I understand it.
