I don't really like Letterman anyways ;)

Like I've said before, I don't really watch late night, but when I do I watch Leno. And given the history of the tonight show, I don't want someone like Conan on there ;)

"someone like Conan"? A smart, funny, intelligent, guy who does a show that isn't just an excuse for people to come on and shill their awful movies every night while doing lowest common denominator hacky, boring material that hasn't been funny in years, if ever?

You're totally right.

I think Jay and his people wanted Kimmel to do the 10 @ 10 and have it be banal to give the appearance that Jay & Jimmy are somehow friends or something. Then people would just dismiss Jimmy's ripping on Jay as him poking fun at a friend.

Instead, Kimmel showed cojones and the gamble on Jay's part blew up in his face.

So why'd you mention him as someone you'd watch?

Well I watched him a few times since Conan's his competition and Leno wasn't...

So you'd rather watch Letterman at 11:30 than Leno at 10:00.

Conan O'Brien has had 'conversations' with Fox, but network not sure they can make a profit on him

Had O'Brien not taken NBC's deal, where would he probably have ended up? ABC and FOX was trying to snag him right? Did Kimmel have his show already, and if so why did ABC want Conan to go with them?

In 2004, Kimmel had been on the air less than two years. Although his show was offered to ABC affiliates for the post-Nightline 12am slot (30 minutes after the end of the local news), it was pushed back on most channels to 1230/1130c. In many central time zone markets, Kimmel was getting a 12am start, 90 minutes after the end of the local news.

Depending on the market, Kimmel was getting beaten by Leno and Conan, Conan head to head, or just the second half of Conan.

ABC, if it snagged Conan, would have pushed its affiliates to drop their syndicated reruns, to provide Conan with the 12am slot --and there probably would have been contractual guarantees about what kind of national clearance Conan would get at 12/11c. And if Conan could prove to be a ratings winner, ABC would have dumped Nightline (as they had previously promised to do fro Letterman).

ABC could have just dropped Kimmel in favor of Conan. But since Kimmel was already being pushed back in most markets, giving him the post-Conan slot (officially) would probably have been the play.

FOX needs to look at DVDTALK posts so they can see that Conan will beat Leno head to head.:sarcasm:

I'm a movie / DVD type of guy, so I tend to be watching stuff until about 10:30-11PM

Leno & Letterman at the same time I'll take Leno, but Letterman & Conan, I'll take Letterman. And if both Leno and Letterman were out, I'd just turn the TV off rather than watch Conan.

Once again: Conan doesn't have to "win" to be successful.

According to TV Guide, FOX is considering airing a Conan late night show on its cable channel FX, during the week, and then on FOX broadcast channels on the weekend.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Lopez and Luds work for Leno.

I'm sure either or both of them will attack my thought but something is not right here.

Either that or they are 70 years old.

Yes I said it.

that's interesting. i think creatively, that would be awesome, but in terms of his crew, would everyone come along? i'd imagine they wouldn't be able to have the same kind of production staff as they did on the Tonight Show.

I think a move to cable would be good for Conan, but that's still pretty fucked up.. I wonder what his ratings would be like.

Could be a temp move until Letterman retires and then we can get our Conan-Jay cage match in 2012.

i still maintain that Jon Stewart is taking over Letterman's show.

Stewart's said that the only reason they do interviews with "stars" on the Daily Show for filler. I don't think he cares about that sort of thing at all, but I could be wrong.

As if I didn't pollute this thread enough, I feel the need to say that I was the adamant (only) supporter of Joel McHale getting the NBC Late Show.

Jimmy has no business being on Late Night.

All he had to worry about was ABC,CBS and Simpson reruns on FOX and he couldn't beat that. So you think going on cable with many more channels he's going to do good?-ohbfrank-
