Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
So is the Tonight Show still #1 but with a smaller lead over the others, or is there some new show drawing viewers in late night?

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Tonight Show is still #1. I'm not sure how the ratings reflect with Leno's pre-Conan Tonight Show, but it seems reasonable to think that some viewers shifted to Conan, while overall viewership is on the decline as more people move to online viewing and alternative entertainment.
This article has some interesting notes: http://www.whec.com/article/stories/...html?cat=10074 David Letterman, the host of a rival late-night show on CBS, accepted a significant pay cut in 2009... ...the cuts Friday, [are] expected to trim the program’s weekly budget by about $600,000, or 25 percent, to $1.7 million. That’s back to its levels of a few years ago. ...During Leno’s brief stint hosting his prime-time program, his show’s weekly budget escalated and wasn’t reduced significantly to reflect his return to the late-night slot until now. |

Also Leno fans are more likely to die day-over-day than Conan's.

I'm surprised they have that many people on staff at Jay Leno presents The Internet

What the fuck is wrong with NBC's finance department?

Jay Leno Addresses 'Tonight Show' Layoffs, Slams NBC and Comcast On Friday, the NBC late-night program laid off about 20 employees; the direct cause of the cuts was not clear, nor were the departments hit. Meanwhile, execs at the Comcast, which owns the network, continue to evaluate the assets the company bought in early last year. "Welcome to The Tonight Show, or as Comcast calls us, The Expendables! As you may have heard, our parent company has downsized The Tonight Show," Leno said during his monologue Monday (via Vulture). "And we've consistently been No. 1 in the ratings. And if you know anything about our network, that kind of thing is frowned upon." While Tonight remains a regular ratings leader amongst its competition, its core audience has aged as younger viewers tune into rivals such as Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. "I have more bad news: turns out we've been taken over by Bain Capital!," Leno cracked, adding: "I KNEW something was going on. Friday morning I woke up and there was a peacock head in my bed." As THR reported, Leno is paid approximately $30 million. He last reupped his contract in 2010 after reclaiming the Tonight Show from Conan O'Brien and, post-layoffs, is said to be taking a sizable pay cut. |
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
he reportedly took a pay cut to $20 million a year. if he's so pissed about the cuts, go down to $15 million a year. he always touts how proud he is that he never touches his tonight show money and lives on his stand up money. put your money where you mouth is you big-chinned fuckface.

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
20 people @ $100k = $2M. Wouldn't those people actually work for Leno's company? Bah. I won't pretend to know Leno's finances.
Conan has always presented himself as a selfless dude. He seems more interested in making a show than making money. Not that he doesn't have an ego. He just has one of those good egos. |
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
God, only $20 million a year. I wonder how he survives on that?

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
On a side note, I have DVR'd Conan's new show since it started. I find I watch less and less of it, and if there is a recording conflict it is the one to go. At this point I only watch the scripted bits and a the occasional guests that intrigue me. I am more likely to watch Craig Furgeson or Jimmy Kimmel. I never watch Leno's show. Not because I hate Leno (I actually like the guy), but because the guest portion show is so incredibly phony and boring (even for a talk show). Letterman was my guy back in the day, and I still think he has the quickest natural wit. I think I started drifting away when his personal biases became part of his interviews.

Kimmel is moving into this timeslot as well. I guess the show is doing well enough to go up directly against Letterman and Leno.

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
I find myself watching late night talk less and less, I find Kimmel to have the funniest skits, Fallon to have the most creative/cool bits, I can't stand Leno anymore and never really cared for Letterman. I can't watch a full episode of Ferguson but he seems like a good guy and decent host, just some of the quirky stuff doesn't work for me. Conan has sort of lost me over the last year, it just feels a bit half-assed, though still enjoyable from time to time.

If you read the AICN story, you'd see at the end they were just relaying the info in this story http://www.nydailynews.com/entertain...icle-1.1220267 |
