You keep insulting Conan O'Brien, calling him spoiled and a bitch, but the one thing Conan HAS NOT DONE is make a promise and then break it.

What you don't or won't understand is that (part of) the reason so many people here at DVD TALK, and in show business, are against Jay Leno is that he is a double-crosser.

Leno makes deals and promises, and then he goes back on his word.

It's as simple as that.
Fans are fans, but that's why people in the industry lined up on Conan's side. They saw Jay Leno for what he is: a lying double-crosser.

It's a matter of money and that's not the way a buiz is run.
Like in sports if you sign a manager to a contract he's fired before the contract is up. Why? Because the team is doing bad.
But that isn't always so like here in Chicago the Bears Lovie Smith has 2 years to go on his contract. The Bears don't fire him because they want to honor the contract. They don't want to pay him 2 years and pay another coach 2 years. The Cubs have a Gm who also has a few years left on his contract even though this Gm has spent a lot of money and not gotten his team to the World Series. The new owners don't fire him because they don't want to pay him and have to pay the guy to replace him. Now the Yankees and Lakers and some other sports teams don't care and will fire you and not wait for your contract to expire if you suck at your job.
NBC saw the ratings numbers and Conan sucked.
Who here would have waited it out with Conan or bring back Jay who left with great numbers?
It's like President Obama now has to decide do I continue with with my Left-wing agenda after what happened in Mass. last week or move to the center? Think!!-ohbfrank-

USA was the most watched cable network of '09 (now for 4 years running, ratings up 14% in '09) with the following Nielsen Live+7 ratings:

In Plain Sight - avg 5m viewers
Psych - avg 5.21m viewers
White Collar - avg 5.68m viewers
Burn Notice - avg 7.19m viewers
Royal Pains - avg 7.47m viewers
Monk - unsure, but the series finale drew 9.21m viewers

So how did NBC Universal get USA so right and NBC so wrong?

From what I've learned from this thread, it appears that NBC was too liberal, whereas USA is most likely run by conservatives. ;)

To promote Jay Leno’s appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show tomorrow, Harpo Productions released a short transcript from the interview that was taped yesterday on the set of the comedian’s cancelled primetime show. There’s nothing extraordinary about this particular exchange – Leno typically keeps his feelings to himself during most interviews — but apparently, he goes on to address his decision to return to The Tonight Show and the public reaction to the negotiations, which is obviously being reserved for tomorrow’s broadcast. Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

Winfrey Have you talked to Conan in person?
Leno I haven’t talked to him through all this. No. I haven’t.
Winfrey Did you want to pick up the phone?
Leno Yeah, but it didn’t seem appropriate.
Winfrey Why?
Leno I don’t know. I think it — let things cool down and maybe we’ll talk, you know.
Winfrey Were any of the things that he said about you hurtful?
Leno No. They were jokes. And that’s okay. I mean –
Winfrey So jokes don’t hurt you.
Leno It’s what we do, you know? You can’t — it’s like being a fighter and say when you got punched in the head, did it hurt? Well, yeah. But you’re a fighter. That’s what you do.

I think it's because those are all procedural shows, which usually get good ratings. I have personally watched all 6 of those shows and have now slowly whittled it down to only two (Psych and Burn Notice) because I got bored with the others.

The major shows that NBC has (30 Rock, The Office, etc.) appeal to a "hipper" audience, which means they get crappy ratings. Nielsen families like bland, harmless shows - this is why The Mentalist and American Idol get high ratings. They aren't bad shows, they are made appeal to a broad audience and don't take creative risks that cable shows like Damages and Breaking Bad do. It's the same with music and movies. The stuff that plays it safe is the stuff that rises to the top.

Nonsence. The Office is on 5 nights a week on every local channel in the country and TBS.

And to think that after the Leno/Conan switch that NBC is tanking in the ratings because it somehow wants to keep hipper shows on and are purposely passing on mainstream hits is laughable

Can someone please post a graph of Conan's ratings before the Leno Show destroyed them, and also explain to wm Lopez what a lead in is? It's seriously like trying to explain something to a brick wearing a shirt.

I didn't say that, I just said that The Office, 30 Rock, etc. are "hipper" shows and don't get great ratings. I didn't mean to sound like I thought that was their purposeful intention.

So you are contending that a great lead in is what drove Leno's ratings? And the lack of one for Conan is the cause of his?

It's a miracle!

It's like this. That guy who hosts WHEEL OF FORTUNE, Arsino Hall and Joan Rivers and even Magic Johnson had late night talk shows. Their ratings were not good so they were cancelled.
Now Jay Leno had to against David Letterman who had a following many thought would lose. But the people watched Jay Leno.
NBC has had bad shows for the last few years. Even Leno made fun of that back then. CBS always had better shows than NBC in the last few years.

Mondays
Crossing Jordan, Third Watch, Medium

Tuesdays
Frasier, Law and Order SVU

Wednesdays
The West Wing, Law and Order

Thursdays
Seinfeld, Friends, ER

Jay Leno became the host of the Tonight Show in 1992.
In 1995, Jay Leno overtook Letterman as the #1 rated late night show.
In 1995, NBC had the #1,2,3,4,8 most popular primetime shows
In 1996, NBC had the #1,2,3,4,5,6,8 most popular primetime shows
1997: 1,2,3,4,8,10
1998: 1,2,3,5,6

It is especially worth noting that the entire time Jay Leno was #1, NBC had ER on Thursday nights at 10pm.
FYI: ER was one of the most popular drama series in TV history, and Thursdays are the most important night for ratings in late night TV.

I asked you about PEOPLE not the corporation NBC.

If you want to answer my question, you have to defend Jay Leno's lying and double-crossing.

And please leave Obama out of it.
