Looks good!

(YouTube won't allow direct embedding on this one.)

Leno will assuredly play the victim card again, but at least it seems like Oprah's asking all the right questions.

The main thing is this will all turn out well for everyone.

Conan will get a new show on FOX, which should suit him and his young fan base better.

Leno and Letterman will go back head to head, the way it should be.

Quite frankly, I'm shocked that anybody (even Conan's man fanboys) on this site ever thought that he would work as host of The Tonight Show. That's just dumb.

Nobody who's known primarily for a puppet dog that talks shit and a bear that jacks off would ever work out as host of The Tonight Show.

Letterman used to do insanely stupid skits like Conan did/does, and that's why Letterman didn't get Carson's show in the first place......

BECAUSE THE MASSES DON'T REALLY CARE TO WATCH THAT KIND OF BULLSHIT.

This is a business, and Jay Leno won. End of story.

I agree with your whole post. The masses don't want unique, hip, or groundbreaking. They want recognizable, non-challenging, and comfortable. Those that want humor that is off the beaten track can get it from Letterman or Kimmel. There was no more room in the late night line-up for another innovator who wants to push the limits.

I know. I am more than happy to watch Daily Show and Colbert, even though most of their guests aren't always that great.

It's the same thing with movies. I'd love to see a list of all the awful movies that go straight to No. 1, make a ton of loot and then we get pounded with sequels.

The only thing I don't like is people claiming Conan is this loveable, stand up guy while Leno is just some piece of shit. This is Hollywood and people do what they have to do to succeed.

Nobody really knows these people.

I've liked Letterman for a while now, but If I were him I'd be quite embarrassed that I'd been losing to a man for 14 years that most people think isn't funny and has a lousy show.

What about all the people in show business who do know them who have been saying that?

Maybe his hurt feelings over losing to Jay is what drove Dave into the arms of women half his age.

Jay Leno became the host of the Tonight Show in 1992.
In 1995, Jay Leno overtook Letterman as the #1 rated late night show.
In 1995, NBC had the #1,2,3,4,8 most popular primetime shows
In 1996, NBC had the #1,2,3,4,5,6,8 most popular primetime shows
1997: 1,2,3,4,8,10
1998: 1,2,3,5,6

It is especially worth noting that the entire time Jay Leno was #1, NBC had ER on Thursday nights at 10pm.
FYI: ER was one of the most popular drama series in TV history, and Thursdays are the most important night for ratings in late night TV.

No record of 2000 to 2008?

No because that disproves that Leno needs good leadins to win the rating wars.

The ratings information provided is evidence that Jay Leno had the most popular prime-time line-up feeding into his show for the first years of his run as the most popular late night host.

The theory is [a theory with which I'm sure you disagree] that all those incredibly popular prime-time shows provided a platform for NBC to promote Jay Leno, and convince people to sample the show.

No one at this forum has ever denied that Jay Leno is very popular.

However, he never would have become popular unless viewers had been made aware of his show, in the first place.

The shows I listed [the information in the post that you and Mr Lopez have decided to ignore] included the popular dramas that aired at 10pm during the 2000s.

Y'know, the kind of shows that Conan never benefited from because NBC had the Jay Leno suckfest on every night at 10pm.

Has late-night battle permanently wounded Leno?

NEW YORK – Certainly Jay Leno would love to wake up to find that the last six months was just a nightmare.

That way, he'd be preparing another "Tonight" show monologue, not going on the national shrink's sofa across from Oprah Winfrey, as he was Thursday. He wouldn't have seen a photo of himself doctored to look battered on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, symbolizing television's biggest flop ever. And he wouldn't have heard the rough jokes with the serious subtext that he had sandbagged Conan O'Brien.

NBC is hoping that it all goes away, too. The network won't know until March 1 whether he's been permanently damaged or not by the disastrous decision to try him in prime time and the clumsy way he recovered his old job. March 1 is when Leno returns to late night, opposite David Letterman on CBS.

"He's going to be competitive and I think his audience is going to come back over time," says Jeff Gaspin, NBC Universal Entertainment chairman.

Except for the Winfrey interview, Leno will do little talking after his 10 p.m. EST show ends with the onset of the Olympics. NBC will promote his return to late night but in a low-key fashion since it's been only a few months that it hyped his prime time show, Gaspin said.

"We're going to do it with a little humor and we're going to do it with a little wink to the audience," he said. "We know they know what's going on."

The 10 p.m. show, canceled because affiliates complained about its low ratings, instantly transformed Leno's public image into that of a failure after a 15-year run as the king of late-night television.

Meanwhile, his "Tonight" show successor, Conan O'Brien, despite being a ratings failure himself, became a folk hero when he wouldn't accept NBC's plan to move his "Tonight" show to 12:05 a.m. EST to accommodate Leno's shortened comedy program. Leno has been vilified for taking back a job he plainly didn't want to leave in the first place, despite promising more than five years ago that he would

Jay Leno had at least seven years of NBC on top to develop an audience.

Conan had seven months of a last place NBC to develop an audience.

Not only that, but the size of a good 12:30 audience would not be adequate for the 11:30 slot regardless. He required new viewers, who more than likely just kept watching Jay.

Leno says he 'felt really bad' for O'Brien

Leno told Oprah Winfrey on Thursday's episode of her talk show that he thinks what happened to O'Brien is "unfair." NBC has unseated O'Brien from "The Tonight Show" and moved Leno back to the program he had hosted for 17 years. Leno is scheduled to return to "Tonight" on March 1.

Leno also says he has "regrets" that the situation wasn't handled better — but he isn't sure what he could have done differently. He told Winfrey that NBC executives asked him to leave "Tonight" in 2004 because they wanted to give the program to O'Brien.

Harpo Productions has asked O'Brien to appear on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," but an appearance hasn't been confirmed.

:violin:

How about not get that additional contract in the first place? How about walk away gracefully when YOUR SHOW tanked and let NBC off the $150M buyout hook to give the young Conan his fair shake and dream.

He can't. He's been barred from speaking publicly about this debacle until September 1, I believe.

I think that's when he can host a show again, but he is barred from any appearance for 2-3 months.
