If you go by typical "good" time-travel storytelling standards (where alternate timelines branch off in logical spots and aren't just thrown out there willy-nilly) then there are only 2 timelines (so far). Timeline 1 - The original "natural" timeline, experienced by future Hiro and unaltered by time travel: - Hiro stabs Sylar. - Sylar heals. - implies Sylar killed Claire. - implies Peter never met Claire. - Sylar (reportedly) blows up New York. - Hiro, over 5 years' time, pieces together information and comes up with his Save the Cheerleader plan. Timeline 2 - When future Hiro travels to the present to warn Peter, we get a branch in the timeline. Events can now occur differently than future Hiro remembers them. We've been watching this particular timeline ever since the subway warning episode. It is established that tonight's episode is the continuation of that timeline when present Hiro informs future Hiro that Claire is still alive. Thus, everything we witness in this episode actually took place in the 5 subsequent years of the timeline we were already watching. Namely: - Peter saves Claire. (we already watched this happen) - Peter blows up New York. (exact circumstances unknown) - Peter's involvement is covered up and Sylar is blamed. - Peter has a scar. ????? - Sylar kills chameleon lady. - Sylar kills and impersonates Nathan. - Sylar finally gets Claire's healing ability, much later than in the "natural" timeline. Anyway, from a narrative perspective, I can't think of many good reasons for Peter to have a scar except to imply that he can't heal. (The only other possibility would be a cheap gotcha-type red herring, which so far this show has been too intelligent to resort to.) And as such it is extremely inconsistent that Peter has a scar and that Claire is alive in the same timeline. So they better have a damn good explanation for that scar. Otherwise, I think the writers simply botched the time-travel aspect and got their timelines a little mixed up. Which is ok, it's easy to do, very few shows/stories do it well. Incidentally, following this episode we will now be watching Timeline 3 - present Hiro returning to the present with knowledge he didn't have before, thus creating another branch point and again giving the possibility of events being able to occur differently. |

That said, this episode definitely had a lot of balls. Not just for a pseudo-9/11 memorial, but for pseudo-post-9/11 events across the board. This show is amazing. I didn't even see the Nathan/Sylar thing coming, and I'm usually on the same page as those "holy shit" moments (even if I only catch them a few seconds beforehand). One thing that's bothering me a little is why, over the course of however many years Sylar was posing as Nathan, did Parkman apparently never catch a hint that it was actually Sylar? Surely The Hatian wasn't around everytime they spoke in person, and even if he was, why would he block Parkman from reading The President's mind unless instructed to do so? I dunno, just a strange little plot hole that probably has some explanation, I just can't think of what it might be. |
Here's another idea on the scar.
If that kid can take away powers, maybe she took away Peter's healing power sometime in the future? |
Is today Hyperbole Day or something?
Anyways, fun episode. They actually fooled me with Sylar diguised as Nathan, even with all the clues. Bravo. |
I agree with others, this was the best episode yet. If the finale stays at such a high level the HD-DVD set will be a no brainer. There have been some less than stellar episodes, but if they are building to a sustained climax like we saw tonight it was all worth it.

Great episode. All this time travel stuff confuses me. But the only two important things I can piece together is the comic book Hiro has at the end is key. When Isaac died he said he found a way to kill Syler and im sure it shows it in the book. Going by the previews its not Hiro stabbing him but the girl they showed.

Why is everyone talking about HD-DVD, does this mean its not coming out on BluRay?

Cant really add anything new but just say what a great fucking show... This may be the first show I watch on TV "live", and still purchase the DVD set (HD-DVD set).

Future Hiro was really slicing those guards, and yet, no blood.

Future Jessica is just as annoying as present Jessica.

Correct. I believe the HD-DVD was announced a few weeks ago. |
Nice comparison pankwindu! I wasn't understanding why people were calling this an alternate time-line. I guess from episode one, technically it is an alternate time-line, but it is the "current" time-line from the previous episodes.
I brought the scar up last week, and knew based on what was revealed/known already that something wasn't right. They'll need to explain that, I would think. But then again, if Hiro goes back to the "altered present" and changes it again, will they need to go back and explain? I suspect once they alter the time-line again, they won't follow up on anything from this current time-line in the future, (scar, Nathan "flying off" fallout etc). One thing I noticed last night, apparently the Haitian can control who he wants to put the dampers on. Parkman was still able to mind read with him in the room while the Haitian was holding Hiro. |

So who was the girl that was with HRG when he was helping the kid's family go underground? I thought that was Candice. But Sylar had to kill Candice to get her shapeshifting powers. I'm confused.
